The other day I got a giant bolt in my tire so I take it down to the tire shop for repair. They say no problem, come back tomorrow (which is today) to pick it up.
So today, they say the bead was ripped but since they threw away the tire, the guy I was talking to said he can't tell if they did it or if it was already like that. It's the original tire from the factory.
I'm pretty sure the only way the damage could have happened was if the tire shop did it. Everybody agree?
The guy offered to give me a $100 instant rebate on total price of 4 tires, plus he is going to give me a used free tire so I can have a spare tire for this weekends camping trip. Actually, now that I think of it, I won't need that free spare tire once I get 4 new tires.
So basically, I'm getting $100 off, but my tire purchasing plans have been moved up 1 year.
Do you guys think this is fair?

what is the wear on the tires? figure you had a warranty (prorate) and they are replacing the tire under that warranty. since they damaged it, and then promptly disposed of the evidence (really?!) they should let you buy 3 new tires, and at the very least prorate the 4th, or at most throw that one in for free since they damaged an otherwise roadworthy (with a patch) tire.
i would really question them on HOW they ripped the bead and WHY they threw the tire away. that doesn't seem right to me. most places will keep it and show it to you. in california, we have a right to retain discarded parts. if AZ is similar, this might be some ground for you to haggle over. regardless, the state BAR (or similar) should be notified they destroyed evidence.
id ask for buy 3 get 4th free on your choice, or at least a heavy discount. not trying to rip them off, but it appears some unsavory business practices might have occurred.

They didn't have that much life left. Maybe 6-12 months.

The bead most likely got torn during dismounting - I've done it myself, it happens sometimes. It's illegal to just throw tires away, so that bit is BS. Just about every shop I've been to (300+ when I was a field engineer) stores the tires somewhere and has them taken away on a predetermined schedule by an outside vendor. I don't remember AZ having a Bureau of Auto Repair (BAR), but that tire was your property and they had no authority to dispose of it without your authorization.
Will they give you the $100 and price match whatever tires you decide on? If not, they might just be playing a number game where the tire price is inflated to cover the $100 they "credit" you. Overall, $100 off on a reasonably priced set of tires isn't bad - at least they're trying to make good, even if their story sounds a bit off
Oh that tires not gone, bet its sitting outside with the rest of them. Usually in an unlocked area. Go and look and I bet its there right now.

Do you mean price match a competitor? They didn't say that and I haven't had time to look at other prices yet.

Yep, see if they'll give you the $100 and price match a competitor - is this a national chain store or independently owned shop? Keep us posted on how it goes . . .

Like Keith said, I call BS on the tire being gone. It's around somewhere and if they messed it up removing it they are trying to hide their mistakes. If that's the case I'm not sure I'd want to give them any money for more tires let alone let them install them.
I like Sean's idea of the buy 3 get 1 free deal as you get a bit of a break and if in fact the tire was done being they don't loose out too bad. They might be a good shop but I'd want them to show some professional courtesy before I gave them any more business.

If it were me, I would take the free used tire, slap it on that wheel, and run on them until you are ready to buy new tires.
1 mismatched tire? so what?
I've bought pairs or even single used tires from time to time when I was younger when money was tight and I couldnt afford a new tire, or just needed 1 replaced. W
hy by a set of 4? Those tires have a year left, tell them to give you a used tire free, and I wouldn't go back.
