View Full Version : Ditched the low hanging stock receiver. Did some cutting/welding...

Thread title pretty much explains what went down. My desire to make this happen really started when I got my CBI Tire Carrier. I went with the 'premium' model that has the pass through receiver at the bottom. This brought things to a whole new level of 'low hanging'. Not to mention the additional overhang.

When I removed my spare I noticed that the 4th Gens have a boxed in frame. This is a good thing. And being that the stock receiver is just bolted to that, why not remove it and install a receiver directly into the frame. Stronger, better, BAM!

Oh, Removed all the Spare Tire BS in the process. Dropped like 15lbs! Race Car Status.

So 20 bucks later and about 4 hours of my time, I have much less hangage. Gained 4.5" of clearance over the stock setup. Quite happy with this.

Nice!!!

that looks like a great mod!

It is interesting to see that the bolt pattern for the stock hitch looks like it matches up to the bolt pattern for a pintle hitch. If this is the case, go Toyota!

Thanks Sean. And yes, looks like the bolt pattern is identical to a pintle bolt pattern. Not sure it would clear the bumper though. But hey, all that takes is a little trim work!

Some day when I go to a custom rear bumper with swing out, I definitely will be running a pintle on it. Love me some pintle!

Yes. The CBI Carrier is very solid. I was quite impressed with the build quality and I have been very happy with it.

Are you sure that would be safe? Are you an 'engineer', do you even know what you're talking about? Haha.

But yeah, when the time arises I will weld on a pair of safety chain loops and I will be Rockin' like Dokken!

Thanks Lance.

It was a cheap and easy way to improve things while I continue my build. Of course, I will eventually will have a custom rear.

Should I start counting the days when you'll be building your own rear bumper? I'm gonna say within the next 18 months! ;)

Once you get a bug to build, it's all downhill from there!

On a separate note, you gonna do something up front or keep it mild before you go wild for now?

30 years old. Just got good taste in music. Like Joe Dirt said, "I'm a rocker through and through man!" Haha.

More than likely I will fully bust out. Its just how I roll. But as the years have gone by, the responsibilities have gone up. Mortgage, two kids, and all that stuff. Makes for a lot less mod money.

Skids and Lockers/Gearing will be up first. Probably fit a full stereo in there somewhere as well. After that I will do a Demello front with winch. As for the rear, not too many options. The CBI is really the only one I like. But super pricey and IMO, a little excessive. So being that I have the skills to fab, I will probably convince myself to build my own. Definitely a ways down the road though.

Haha. Thank you Sir. I have been gone a while though. What, I sold the 3rd Gen back in like 08. Really haven't been around since then...

Ronin was born July of 2010. So Ronin is 2 and Chloe is 6 and a half now. Time goes by quick man!

Yes it does! Hopefully I make it to the Jamboree and we can catch up. Would be cool.
