It's been several months since I've used the 4WD but the last time I did, everything was working and I made it through some rough wheeling.

But today, I put it into H4 during a heavy rain and the 4WD light wouldn't come on. I'm not sure if it is engaging but 4Lo seems to be working just from the feel of the gearing and the sound.

I did also notice a small clicking sound on right hand turns, not sure if it is related to the problem.

Any ideas for diagnosing? 3.4, AT with manual transfer lever, ADD

if you're able to put all 4 wheels off the ground, you might want to start by testing to see if the 4wd even works. if it does then you probably just have a burnt light which would be your best solution. if the 4wd doesn't engage then you've got other problems.

good luck!

I have a relay or something under the dash that clicks whenever the light comes on. Do you hear any clicks from under the dash?

My green 4wd drive light only turns on every once in a while. I've traced wiring back all over the place and everything is in order and not burned out. To ensure you have 4wd get the vehicle in the air and do as Lance said. I did this when I first noticed my light off just before a trip. 4lo will still be slow and sound geary because of the gear reduction but that doesn't mean your front shaft is getting power.

I don't let it bother me and for the most part I'm the only one that drives my 4runner in 4wd. If my wife were driving and needed 4wd I'd have to tell her whats going on but that's just part of the conversation I'd have with her about the vehicle. Don't touch this, only touch this if this is happening, don't worry about that, etc. I've added quite a few switches, accessories and lights. As such she doesn't drive it much.
