Last week I bought back my very first car. My dad bought it off me 22 years ago. It's been sitting in his garage forever. I bought it back and drove it back home. No plans on what to do.

mk1 or mk2 gti? DUDE! awesome car!

my plans for something like that would either make it a reliable daily driver, or cage it, engine swap/rebuild, and drive the piss out of it!

MK1. The car needs a ton of cleaning but runs great. It ran with no issues from Ca. to Iowa. Today is going to be a cleaning day. After the cleaning I will decide. Right now it needs tires and cleaning!

My only issue with the car. It's hideous red interior. Looks horid. If I'm going to keep the car, the interior will be changed to black. While driving it around today, I got a lot of thumbs up.

I'm curious, is yours a 2 door or 4 door? Man that car is sooo old I'm not even sure what it came with. lol 1.8l? (guessing). also what's the mpg like? I only ask cuz we cali folks are hit w/ the stupid insanity on gas prices... (blame CARB!) haha

2 door 1.8L 120hp
This is what mine will look like, when it gets cleaned up.

Gut the interior. Cage + 2 seats. Drop in a 1.8t with a K04 on it. Would be so rad!

With the Audis and VWs I have had in the past, I am really leaning towards something like this in the future. A true project track car from the beginning. Only problem.... they aren't that easy to find anymore.

Spent the weekend cleaning the car in and out. The GTI has cleaned up so good, I drove it to work. Got a lot of compliments. Next mission is finding a complete interior ( changing the color from red to black).

Score! Just found a guy in Wisconsin that is needing a red interior for his GTI. Going to spend the weekend gutting the interior out.

Wow, that sounds like a stroke of luck. I never get off that easy.

Not really. My red interior looked immaculate, the interior I traded for needs work.

I know this isn't the direction you're headed, but I got a few pics of this one at Mt Hood Rally this weekend. It was running in group 5 and the entry listed it as a "1979 VW Turbo Rabbit"

My photog friend said this was one of the few cars really pushing it this weekend (cold/snow/wet/slick conditions)

You "bought it back"? Damn... after 22 years, what's there to buy back?! LOL. It be cool to build a project car.

The GTI was in great shape being in Southern California. I bought the car to give to my son. He prefered a truck. Once the interior is done, the car will go on ebay.

Part of me wants to keep it, part of me wants to sell it and buy a new motorcycle.

Keep in mind that not many people get the change to buy there first car back.

I would grab my '84 mustang back in a heartbeat. Nothing special to anyone else, but it was my 1st car.

As mentioned before, a 1.8 Turbo from around 2003 will bolt right onto your existing transmission....
With a bit of tuning you'll have 200+ hp in a light little car.

Buddy of mine is doing a VR6 swap into an MK1.. gonna be a little beast.

K1600's are nice, too big for my taste though.

I want a K1600 because its big..... I already have a K75s.....

have you thought about the Honda ST1300? Same category as the K1600 but corners better and is lightning fast if you ask it to be. It's what all the new police and highway patrol bikes out here in California are.

haha ok. I'm not brand loyal to anything, except maybe AMD for processors (even that not so much anymore). Carry on
