Many of us have had some misfires lately. I had some issues with moisture and vibrations causing misfires. Even if you don't have the dreaded P0300-P0306 codes, you should replace your spark plugs and wires every 30,000 miles.
Our good friend Bob98SR5 has a great write up on the process over at http://www.4runners.org/writeups/sparkplugs/
Use Denso or NGK wires as well.
Plugs: Use only Denso or NGK plugs. Factory uses Denso, so this is what I recommend. Get these from your local dealer or online at a place like www.sparkplugs.com (http://www.sparkplugs.com)
Wires: The obvious part is the wire set, or the 3 wires that cross over the timing cover. The part number listed below also includes the clips for the coil packs that often break. The NGK kit I had purchased previously that was a few dollars less did not have these clips.
Coil on Plug Boot: These are the tubes that connect the bottom of the coil pack to the spark plugs they cover. These probably do not need to be replaced every 30k miles, but if they have never been replaced, $40 is not a bad price to pay for some new parts down there.
Part, Number, Quantity, Approximate Price Each
Denso two electrode plug,6, K16TR11, $5
Denso wire set,1, #671-6182, $35
Denso Coil on Plug boot, 1, #671-6248, $40.
Total for this maintenance is just over $100, before taxes, etc. Save yourself some trouble and heartache and do this maintenance before you get a CEL!
