Very shorly, I'll be looking for new tires. I'm running 265/75's now, but will be upgrading to 285/75's. If possible, I'd like to use my stock rims because I like how they look and don't want the added expense of upgrading those.

I want everyone's opinion on which of the tires above are the best bang for the buck. Based on your personal experiences or those of someone you know. Please feel free to add any other suggestions. The tires above are the ones I'm most strongly considering. Thanks!

they will fit on the stock rims, but you will need shaved upper control arms.

usually easier to buy new rims.

fwiw, i love my bfg, but im not sure the value for money is great on them. i think they are a wonderful tire, but havent tried anything else.

I really like my MTZ's... They're comparable price and wear to MT/R's, but easier to balance, quieter on the road, and a MUD Tire that's also tough for the rocks.

Best bang for your buck in an M/T is probably the TrXuS M/T. For an all-terrain the BFG's are very hard to beat for both performance and quality.

You need to try and decide how much off-roading you'll be doing and what terrain it will be before you compare M/T's and A/T's though.

Right now, I'm doing about 80-90% on road and the rest off road. I'd like to have the traction of an M/T when I wheel and am really not too concerned about the ride or noise on the road. The biggest thing is siping as I live in the great north where ice is a problem during the winter. Most of the M/T tires above have at least some siping which makes them more attractive for my needs. Thanks for the posts so far!

if you really want a MT, then take a look at these when you get a chance. i got mine off of eBay for right at $200/tire shipped for 315's, brand new from a dealer.

TrXuS M/T's in a 285x75r16 go for about $165 per tire IIRC. They have lots of siping, and as such have excellent traction in snow and ice, while keeping a relatively quiet road demeanor and good traction in the muck. For the price/performance category, they just can't be beat. If you want bang for your buck in an M/T, these are them.

what's the wear like on the TRXUS though? i thought they wore pretty quickly (20k or less on them and they're shot IIRC)...

From what I have seen (including with my own set) they have similar tread life to a Goodyear MTR. I wouldn't expect to get much more than 30K out of them before you don't have enough usable tread left to call it an M/T, but then if you wanted mileage you could get BFG A/T's or Revo's.

cool, good to know. that sounds about like the MT/R's that i've had and matches up with what i've heard from vendors of the MTZ's as well.

I've been talking to a few people who have the Maxxis Bighorns. They seem like a good compromise between M/T's and A/T's. They're relatively cheap too, ~$550 shipped on ebay for 285's.

I voted for the Bighorn's, but I guess I'm a little biased.

If you want a good value yet a good tire and you're sure you want a true M/T, do what I did. Go with the Mickey Thompson MTZ.

They look so tough, they wear well (35-40k I've heard) and they are fairly cheap, $186/tire.

Although, the BFG A/T's are an AWESOME tire. I've had a two sets of those and two sets of the BFG Muds and I loved them both equally for their respective qualities. But these MTZ's looked too darn good for me to pass up and I definitely wanted an M/T.

Good luck man, post up after you decide.

I just installed a set of 285/75/16 MTR's on my 99 4Runner using the stock wheels. They rub the frame a little when the wheel is turned in a fully locked position either left or right.

I couldn't beat the price $125.00 per tire.
[ I work for the local government and get tires at their cost ]

Goodyear is always out of stock on tires, or out on strike, anymore you don't know if their gonna have them available, or how long you have to wait.

for what it is worth, i have had the 285/75/16 Trxus M/T's on for a little over a year and they have over 40k miles on them. I am horrible at rotating them, and they all still have 10/32 of tread left. PLENTY to be still considered an M/T tire. and at $150 a piece for my size, i can't beat it.
