View Full Version : 3.4 supercharger being produced again

I bought my supercharger last year when I had heard that TRD ended production. At the time I bought mine there were only 31 units remaining in the country. I got word last month that TRD and Magnuson resumed production of the 3.4 SC at the rate of 30 units per month. No word yet on whether or not the pricing has changed, but I do know that URD is now providing parts to TRD for the kits. Don't get too excited, I think the kit is basically the same, but I'm glad to hear they will continue to be available at dealerships. It has really transformed the driving experience and utility of my 4Runner with no down-sides other than initial purchase price.

I will have to look into this more with my parts guys are work.
I have been considering it more since you all have been switching.

So is it looking like the 7th injector kit is being included in the S/C kit then?

With my engine at over 200k, and the only other optional donor at 269k
I feel I will need an engine rebuild is in order before I plop a new sc ontop.

I'm sure the 7th injector kit is not part of the kit, particularly since the TRD blower is smog legal and so is the TRD 7th injector, but the URD stuff has not been certified. URD will not say what they include in the new kit, but I seriously doubt it's anything game-changing.

Why not throw on the charger and just run it? These engines run a long time; and if it ever does give up the ghost, just rebuild it then.

my biggest worry is my auto trans.

I think for the cost of a super charger, all the fuel mods, plus the issues the auto trans probably requiring both a rebuild and a valve body upgrade, I rather swap in the 4.0 complete with a 5 spd auto.

This is still great news!

Good news! I've been on a fence with the supercharger swap. The extra power would be really nice! Part of me wants to do it, but 3-4 grand is a lot to spend on a supercharger and fuel kit. Part of me just wants to keep the money and put it towards a newer Taco, Land Cruiser, or 4Runner that already has extra power. I dunno.

That all being said though, it's nice to see Toyota selling these again. If I could find a good deal on one, I'd be tempted to pick one up.

Originally I thought my engine was starting to give up the ghost as is (slight random stumble at idle and no real pick up) but then I changed the trans that was behind it and I think its started to come back to life.
Once I get it drive worthy again (tie up loose ends after frame swap)
I will see how it goes.

Originally I too was worried about the auto trans, but they are become a dime a dozen, and I am a little fortunate enough to know a few guys in trans shops that could rebuild me one if necessary for a decent cost (i would cover labor for pulling and putting it in)

I guess I just like the idea of having everything fresh with something like that.
Have the block cleaned and painted and maybe bore it out a little.
All new internals just for the sake of know it would hold up another 200K.
Redo the heads, make sure the all the valves are new and the guides and seals are replaced.
Just a fresh start, it would give me all sorts of warm and fuzzeys to have an all new shinny engine with supercharger on it lol

In my mind it's particularly worth it if you already have a vehicle you like that is paid-for and you can get extra utility from the SC expense. In my case, I want a small travel trailer and it puts my fears of struggling up grades to rest. Plus it's just dang fun.

Starting over with another rig would cost thousands of dollars in maintenance, lifts, upgrades and personalization. (I don't have the time or interest to start over in another rig.) I think a lifted and modded Mercedes G63 AMG G-Wagon or an offroad modified supercharged Range Rover 4.6HSE Sport are the only other vehicles that would catch my interest.

Oh, and BTW, you can't really compare a SC 3.4 to a 4.0, and especially at altitude. The SC 3.4 has a super flat torque curve from idle to redline, the 4.0 has a standard bell-curve with less power and torque at most points in the rev range.

cost is still in upwards of 3k on the supercharger when its said and done?

If you buy all new, yes.

I sure like the specs on the G63 AMG:
5.5L V8, Twin Turbo, 544 hp, 560 ft lbs torque.

I wonder if that motor would fit in a 3rd gen. ;)

You're making me want one more and more. I understand what you're saying, and I may very well go the supercharged route. But, I haven't done that many mods, and I'm just on the fence whether or not I want to throw my money at my 4Runner or pickup something like a 100 series. I'll probably end up doing a lift, sliders, skid plates, and locker on the 4Runner, but I dunno if I'll go much past that. We'll see. All depends on what happens on the job front.

I bet a supercharged 100 would scoot pretty well.

A 3rd gen doesn't need much more. I did those things in 2006 and other than the supercharger, I've just driven and wheeled it the past 7 years with virtually no other changes.

Dan, what exactly is leaning you towards these options?
Are you looking for more space?
Bigger engine?
More modern amenities?

The 3rd gen is a great platform, easy to work on, easy to modify, simple.

But I guess you have to think of the pros and cons in your mind to make you sway.

After driving the truck back again and feeling how it was stock, I def feel its going to need a power boost when I get the lift back on it.
I still plan on doing gearing but man it would be fun to have a SC!

Dan, if you even *think* of selling your rig, let me know, my brother in law wants it. He wants to upgrade from his 2nd gen to a 3rd gen for towing. Like me, he won't drive an automatic.

Yeah, I really like how you and Mike have your 4Runner set up, and I'll probably end up with something similar. I would like to add an auxiliary fuel tank in the spare tire spot, and maybe rebuild my cargo box to accommodate a spare tire. A front/rear bumper and winch would be really nice, but I'm not sure I want to put that kinda money into my 4Runner.

All of the above. lol. I really like the 100 series. It's a classy vehicle with more space, more power, more doodads, and it's still a well built vehicle. Only downside I can think of is price and torsion bars.

I will say that the 4Runner has been a great vehicle. I've put almost 40k (22k from my road trip) on it since I purchased it 2.5 years ago, and it has run fantastic. The fit and finish has been really good, and as far as I know, nothing has fallen off my truck (aside from the shackle). The interior holds up great with no annoying rattles. I've been very pleased with the 4Runner.

I'll let you know if I decide to sell it. I'll probably hang onto it for a few more years though. Right now I just need to find a job, then save up for a house, then maybe sell my 4runner. :hillbill:

Ha, you could have yours setup like mine in a weekend. All you need is the lift and sliders.

I can think of a few other down sides...
Cost of gas.
Cost of maint (timing belt on a 4.7 is slightly more involved then the 3.4l and iirc brakes are still the style that your familiar with on the 2nd gen with the bearings)
More things that can go wrong with all the gadgets lol.

HOWEVER, Toyota still pays a lot of attention to detail when it comes to the Land Cruiser Line (wish they still kept up with that in the 4Runners and Tacomas...)
Things rarely do go wrong from what I have witnessed with the higher mileage LCs that come into the shop, if anything I think the worst on a 100 series as of lately was an o2 sensor.

The world of a 3rd gen, one weekend and its ready to go!

Dan's 4WD 4Runner with the 5-speed has a higher EPA estimate than the automatics at 17 mpg city, 20 highway. Window sticker here. (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/attachments/3rd-gen-t4rs/22062d1256768205-rear-end-window-sticker-sticker.jpg) I still get that even with the lift, larger tires, SC, etc.

Meanwhile a Land Cruiser is rated at 13 city, 16 highway. Sticker here. (http://www.wedewer.com/lcweb/17-window_sticker.jpg) That's a huge difference.

I'm convinced the 3rd gen will become a classic. I mean seriously, I can barely put fuel in the 4Runner without someone coming up and saying they wish Toyota still made our series 4Runners.

But I don't want to talk you out of buying a LC, my brother in law really wants a 5-speed 3rd gen and particularly in green since the 2nd gen he is replacing (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_gUivjpVhIM/UNNjZIQ70TI/AAAAAAAAIdM/J6IF9ML5ikk/s800/%255BUNSET%255D.jpg) is also green. Did I mention the LC has a way cool tailgate? ;)

I will probably pick up a 100 series at some point in the next couple of years. But I won't be replacing the 4Runner when I do it!
