Man what a trip! The days were long and the wheeling had more hours in the rocks then on the fire roads. The weekend came together quite well despite the lack of planning on my part. I dont know the milage, but the days were longer then they probably should have been. Thanks to JD, Sean and Dan for making it a great outing!

Day1
Cleg is beat up! Pilot showed myself and Sean that it still demands attention and respect. Both of us had a wheel stand on a steep hill. We both followed JD's line soooo; you guessed it, JD is cheating! The rocks are more pronounced then ever and made our time into first camp cap out at 930ish. We had a solid 2 hours of night wheeling on tired eyes. Thank goodness for Aux lighting on all our vehicles.

Day 2
Dishpan links Arrow head to Big bear and we got an early start after camping close to the trail head. Again the years have not been kind to old Dishpan. The easy line is not easy anymore and the hard lines look like rollover on a stick. With a 8pm send off we rolled into Big bear at around noon. JD did amazing on this trail and showed us what crazy stuff a stock 4runner can do with the right driver. The eastern end of white mountain was up next and it was a real tire chewer with several hill climbs through, grapefruit sized, loose jagged rocks. Unexpectedly this was a black diamond trail with features marked "suicide hill" lol. Thankfully JD saw the potential of a overlook rather then my one track mind frame of pressing on. The Over look ended up being the highlight of the trip for me and pictures cant do it justice. From the hill top we spotted a stand of pines for camp. When we arrived at the pines, Sean recognized the area brought us to the best yellow post site I have ever seen.

Day 3
We followed 3N16 from the north eastern boundrys of big bear all the way back to Jacoby canyon(still a favorite). We crossed the street onto 3N04 where we drove past severe small mines and claims. Tip top mountain was the next stop and I would have to say the view was not half as good as the one from white mountain the day prior. After that it was a rally down 3N04 and out rattlesnake canyon. The joshuas at the mouth of Rattlesnake did not disapoint. There are some huge ones in there, but they look like they have taken a beating latly.

I didn't get many pictures, too involved in trying to not break or roll the truck.

The only relaxing part of this weekend was the piece of my step daughter's b-day cake I had! It was definitely some of the hardest off roading I have done, and to do 2 very stressful days back to back was pretty challenging. I still had a blast and can't wait to do it again!

thanks for leading Troy. It is a pain, I know!

We were very fortunate to not have any breakdowns or major stucks on the trail, and we found good camp sites both nights.

Yeah, amazing trip, Troy. That was the perfect combo of wheeling, sight seeing and rock bashing, in my opinion. I have no complaints about any of the trail choices or amount of hours. And finally, my sliders got some use (ok, a LOT)!
I'm realizing that my sidewall "defect" was almost certainly my fault, thanks to a 20-30 mph rock impact. When it happened, I was amazed that the tire didn't blow - looks like it nearly did!
I'll try to post some of the few pics that I took soon.

I had a blast out there! Troy, thanks for putting this together!

It was great to see Troy and JD again, and thanks to Sean for letting me tag along with him.

I'll have my pictures up tomorrow. I'll be working on a video too.

Looks like you guys had a great trip. Was the wheeling just very technical? Reducing body damage?

Jaydee914
05-20-2013, 09:58 AM
Mike,

The first 2 days saw some pretty technical wheeling. We got ourselves into a couple of hairball situations Friday evening, and then Saturday morning was all about picking our way up some really tough rocks (and winching me most of the way up). That morning, the body damage potential was high, but not really the rest of the time.

Seanz0rz
05-20-2013, 10:17 AM
Cleghorn had tons of off camber situations, which is one of the few things I REALLY worry about on the trail. If some minor body damage happens, oh well. But rolling the truck is not an option. The worst were the off camber sections with tall walls on the low side. I was frequently less than 6 inches from removing all the paint on the side of the truck.

Dishpan wasn't horrible, except for the middle waterfall and the beginning near deep creek where JD couldn't get enough traction to get up.

It was a lot of paying attention out there! The only other multiday trip I've done was the Mojave road where you only have to watch for whoops and can really relax. This run was alot of staying on the right line even for my truck. That certainly cuts down on the letting your mind wander and take in the scenery lol. Fun times but long days for me. Jd you could relax since you are used to moto hah

Here are some pictures I took:

Day 1

Started about 3:00pm and aired down at the start of Cleghorn:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/The%20Whole%20Bernardino/IMG_9023.jpg

The views from Cleghorn were pretty fantastic:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/The%20Whole%20Bernardino/IMG_9045.jpg

As we gained altitude, the clouds starting to role in. It was pretty awesome!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/The%20Whole%20Bernardino/IMG_9060.jpg

On one particularly difficult turn, we also passed this burned out pickup on the side of the trail. Our best guess was that it is a 1st gen Toyota pickup.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/The%20Whole%20Bernardino/IMG_9064.jpg

After checking out the truck, we continued on up 2N17X / Pilot Rock:

It was dark by the time we hit Willow Springs:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/DH6twinotter/The%20Whole%20Bernardino/IMG_9098.jpg

We pulled into camp at about 9:30. The original plan was to camp at Holcomb Creek, but that whole area was closed. We did find a campsite just up the road that turned out pretty awesome.

High clench factor wheeling can be exhausting. From the looks of it you all came out ok even though the chance of missing paint and dents was high.

Nice pics, Dan. By the looks of it being a passenger was a little more relaxing.

Picture of our camp:

We packed up camp, and immediately hit Dishpan. This trail was a bit more difficult and took us a while to get through:

Man, looking at these pictures, it's crazily apparent that I need a rear locker. So many times, I had a tire completely stuffed, with all the truck's weight on it, and no power going to it. You're right Troy, I bet if I was locked, I'd have gotten through a lot more on my own.

I also realized I took a bunch of pics! I'm going to try to post some in the am.

We missed you Mark!

JD, if you were locked in the rear, you would have gotten through 98% of the stuff I did. that other 2% might be down to the differences in tire and lift. High centering next to that tree was a pretty big bummer for me, even if I got out eventually on my own.

I will end up spending the day unpacking all my crap, didn't feel like it yesterday. It was a great trip though!

Day two:

Dan's tent and a pretty nice view. It was great waking up to the sound of the babbling river!

Stuck, round 1

Since I was in the middle the whole time, I have a lot of shots of me following Troy.

Long distance winching

Eventually (after 2 hours), I made it up the waterfall section, and then it was Sean's turn. It may have been Troy who put himself in the most precarious position, though:

awesome pics!

I didn't realize Troy was that far under my 4runner! Thanks to both of you for stacking rocks for me and yourselves! I didn't have the stamina this weekend. Time to get in shape!!!

I'm putting together a video of the trip. JD and Troy, can I get the specs of your trucks (mods and such)?

OK, no worries. I was going to have our route included in the video, but no big deal.

I have all the trail together in one file if that helps. I have my mods listed in my Garage here:

Troy, do you have that file handy? I might be able to use it.

I found the reason for my odd popping noise from the front suspension. Snapped the driver's side sway bar end link, again. I think I will build some beefy ones this time...

Ouch, that sucks!
Relatively lots of damage last weekend! I wound up needing 2 new tires and an alignment.

wow! bummer about the tires!

Yeah, the only consolation is that I now have a matching spare. I couldn't justify paying twice that for four 33's right now, with plenty of tread left on the rest.
Did you notice any extra lean without the front sway bar?

Not sure, seems like it felt a little less confident on the twisty dirt roads, but I'm not sure I can entirely contribute that to the lack of a fully attached swaybar. The paved roads home wern't twisty enough to notice.

Whoa! At least now you can say you've done the trail. :-/

Took it for a drive this morning on a slightly twisty road.

I need to get it fixed pronto! Thought I was going to scrape my mirror on the ground!
