Hey all,
I have a 94 4Runner and am getting ready to drive from the east to west coast. This means Texas. I will be driving and night and am looking for options to extend my range. Initially I was looking to purchase a Jerry Can or two and mount them externally but there appears to be little pre-fabricated options availble (or at least that I can find). I was considering a new rear bumper from Marlin and a mount that mates up for a jerry can. Does anyone know of a combination of rear bumper and mounts that works well out of the box? All of my tools are packed and are being shipped and I'd prefer to take it to a shop and let them install the hardware. I am also considering a roof rack with an external fuel pack like this Kolpin (http://www.amazon.com/Kolpin-89135-Fuel-Pack-Compliant/dp/B00384HJ0O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=130S1R1V5QPND&coliid=I3MGQGXQ0Z2VI3) but I'd prefer to not have to worry about leaky fuel cells.
The primary goal is to keep it street legal and still plan for future trail use. Any suggestions or thoughts are welcome.

I don't know too much about 2nd gen stuff available, but I would try to find some metal cans. The old Blitz cans (no longer in business) I have have a metal cap with o ring that will not leak.
Oh, and WELCOME! glad to have you here! Where are you heading to out west? Think you could make the Pismo Jamboree (www.pismojamboree.com)?

Thanks Sean I've been looking at the NATO and Blitz cans but I haven't decided just yet. I'm starting to think a roof rack with one or two Kolpins will be the way I go. I'm headed to Arizona for a new job and won't be able to make it to the Jamoboree.

Since you're not going to be in CA you should check out Scepter Fuel Cans. They're the traditional poly 5 gal jugs and are pretty darn near indestructible. I've got a few before the CARB ban and love em to death. Wished I got a few more but no biggie. They haven't leaked at all. However I only filled them up to about 4.5 gal since the fuel will expand in the sun (just a fyi).
The Kolpin looks cool. I've seen a few before and have no experience but I do see a lot of adventurers use em so they otta be good too!
good luck w/ your new gig in AZ. it's pretty damn hot I hear! lol

Thanks Good Times. Yeah, it'll be hot. I am going to assume these are the Sceptre cans (http://www.dstactical.com/product_info.php?products_id=53&osCsid=e2e93554a4514524d806a774bcb8d0ab) we are talking about, looks like those will be hard to get a hold of. I will keep looking but for now I definately have decided on a roof rack to hold the cans. The point of this purchase will definately be to keep things practical and usable in the future. I'd hate to buy some gas cans that I won't want to use on the trails in the future. But without a custom fabrication I may not have a choice.

Okay, so I did a little digging and found that the Wedco (https://www.expeditionexchange.com/wedco/)can is CARB compliant and is supposedly a good quality can with little worries about leaks. I called John at ExpeditionExchange.com who said he doesn't think he will ever get these cans in stock again. So I found this Briggs and Straton can on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Briggs-Stratton-85043-Gallon-Spill/dp/B0038U3FQ0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375388952&sr=8-1&keywords=85043)which looks identical to the picture of Wedco can (https://www.expeditionexchange.com/wedco/wedco009%20029.JPG) on expeditionexchange.com, but the reviews of the Briggs and Straton are not as good. I think I will go for the Briggs and Straton can and see how it performs over the trip. I plan to mount the can sideways and that is why I am a little concerned about the leaks but I guess there is only one way to find out.

Looks like a solution.
I would get a super siphon, or self priming siphon. The nozzle will leak when you try to fill your tank and it becomes a horrible mess.
Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Hopkins-FloTool-10801-Shaker-Anti-Static/dp/B000EH0ORI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1375393729&sr=8-2&keywords=super+siphon

Btw I have NEVER EVER had good luck w/ those CARB compliant spouts. They suck so much that I end up spilling more fuel than just using the super siphon. I only use the super siphon when filling my fuel tank w/ any of my fuel cans (I've got a collection of different brand cans). I have 2 CARB compliant fuel cans and even for those I use the super siphon. So much easier and fast since I don't have to hold the can. I just leave it on the roof and let gravity do its thing!
Other options include:
Roto-Pax (http://rotopax.com/home.php)
ain't cheap by any standard though.. :)
carb can nozzles suck. If you go on ebay and search gas can spouts you will find some replacements marketed as gas or water can spouts (same thing just a way of getting around legal issues). Buy them and be happy.
FYI: the scepter cans you want to buy are GASOLINE, do not buy diesel ones as you will need to swap out the gaskets in the caps.

I looked through gas cans awhile ago. I would get the scepter military if you can and the natos ones if you cant.
