My friend mentioned to me that the old, small version of the tacoma is called the 1st generation tacoma and the new, larger version is called the 2nd generation.

However, I seem to recall that before this current generation of tacomas came out, people on the forums were giving generation names to the small tacoma. Like delineating the difference between the pre 2000 tacoma with the horizontal grill and the post 2001 with the vertical grill.

Am I remembering that right or did I just make that up?

I would side with the former statement, as would most people.

Splitting the "1st" gen into 2 would be like splitting the 96-98 4runners into a different generation than 99-02. or 03-05 and 06-09 if you will.

There were some bigger changes than your average refresh, including different rear spring lengths and such, but I don't think that warrants a generation separation. The 95.5-04 and 05-current trucks are VERY different underneath, as well as cosmetically.

I would call it:
1st gen: 95.5-00
1.5 gen: 01-04
2nd gen:05-11
2.5 gen: 12-current (the new nose)

Oh I realize all that and I know what wikipedia says, but this was all before the "official" 2nd gen came out. All before people even thought another generation was going to come out.

I could be mixing up the pickup truck (pre tacoma) generations, but I could have sworn the ttora guys were calling their tacoma's different generations from 95.5 -2004.

Judging by the silence, I guess I imagined all that. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time!

I've always considered the 95.5 to 2004 tacos a 1st gen and 2005 to present tacos a 2nd gen.
