View Full Version : My new car camera: accident captured today

Hi all,

Ever since that lying beotch hit me, I finally got the sense to buy a car camera. Quite frankly, driving around with the camera makes me feel more secure just in case bad chit happens.

I was on the phone with Lance today on the 57 North when I captured a little car following a truck too close and ramming it in the back. It looked to be worse hence my "big time accident" comment, but alas, it was just a little accidente' :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0d2IOaBv9I

I purchased this model: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EC4UDPC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can check out the specs on your own. Daylight is good, night time is not so good. But it was rated by a few sites as a best bang for the buck, so I bought it.

Cool! I bet that will come in handy with all the traffic out there. I've been wanting to get a dash cam as well.

Bob, does your camera come on when you turn on the ignition, or does it use the motion detection to turn on?

Also, baiklov the store you ordered it from?

Guys,

Here's the edited version. Just getting used to the Youtube editor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr5_uvtgv2o

It comes with a 12v car plug so it's not hard wired. it takes a 3.5mm male plug. It does have motion detection but from what I'vec read, its so-so.

Yes, Baiklov. So my battery only functionality didn't work. The guy (I called) said from time to time, he finds that the batteries don't work well. So he USPS'd a new battery after the call. 4 days later it arrived and the battery only mode worked.

Cheap insurance!

I think it's the dash cam is a good idea, particularly in today's society.

I do wonder though if it would be better if it lacked audio? If you were involved in an accident that wasn't your fault, but they could hear you on the audio carrying on a phone conversation, could it bring up the question of whether or not you were "distracted during driving." I dunno, just a thought.

Ken,

There's an option to turn the audio off. Good thought.

I have been wanting to get one aw well.
In our recent snow weather the idiots come out to play.
I had two cars on separate occasions right in front of me spin out, and witnessed a near miss.
It is definitely a smart idea with the drivers of today.

Anyone have a GoPro Hero3? If you then you already have an expensive car cam! The Hero 3 is suppose to be able to continuously record over and over on the same card so using it as a car cam works well. I've seen a few guys mod the cam so that you're able to connect the USB charger.

Those w/o a GoPro well.... Just get the one that Bob got. Cheap insurance!

The best part about these devices.... being able to relive the exact moment of pure action! lol Just make sure you're not the one in the "action" haha.

I took a trip up the coast to No Cal this past week and had a scary incident. Up on the highway in Big Sur, a POS impatient a-hole on the other side of the road decided to cross the double line and attempt to pass 3 other cars. It was apparent to me that this guy was hell bent on passing these three cars and so I had to brake hard and watch this a-hole thread the needle between me and the front car. Camera caught all of it, but the camera software continually records over prior footage if its not stopped and downloaded. I have a 32GB card, but from the time the incident occurred and by the time we got from Big Sur to Oakland, it had recorded many times over. Lesson learned: carry two SD cards. Had this been a head on collision, at the very least, it would've revealed who was at fault.

A second card sounds like the ticket. Must be pretty good images if it's filling up 32gb cards so fast. I wonder about this because I still want to get a camera for the house that uses SD cards. If I'm gone for an extended period of time or it takes me a while to realize I need to check the footage it may be gone. I just want to avoid a DVR.

We were in Big Sur last year and Hwy 1 was pretty dicey especially with the couple of sections that have the temporary signals. I think it's the locals that go balls out. They're probably lit from the big bar out near Pfeiffer or ticked off by all the tourists.

Is Big Sur still on fire?

Bob98SR5
12-30-2013, 09:52 AM
Mike,

The car cam captures the vids on a 2 min cycle and loops to overwrite. I was hoping to download the near head on collision video when I got home. I guess I need to read the manual again :P The guy made a really stupid move trying to pass all those cars on a double yellow. My guess he wasn't a local.

Big Sur was not on fire. It was gorgeous. The only road closure was the bridge that's south of the famous Bixby Bridge---the imposter Bixby bridge as I call it. They had traffic control as the bridge was under construction

Are you sure the card is being filled every 2 minutes? Some devices can only see the first 2GB of a card (SD vs SDHC.) My dSLR won't fill a 32GB card nearly that quick. Take a look at the settings and see if you have any other video compression options. If you had a major accident and didn't pull the plug on it within 2 minutes, you would have nothing.

4x4mike
12-30-2013, 12:53 PM
I read Bob's quote as saying it takes 2 minute videos (as shown on the 2 minute video where he's talking with his boy toy). I assume it stacks the 2 minute videos until it thinks it's full, then records over them. It probably calculates that a 32 card has, say 100 slots each being 2 minutes. Once the 100 are full it starts back at 1.

Bob98SR5
12-30-2013, 07:04 PM
Mike's got it right. 2 minute segments, then it starts recording again for another 2 mins segment. When the card gets full, it starts all over again.

hey guys,

you guys probably think im nuts with these car cameras, but i'm getting a new one :) not the cheapest, but well reviewed enough to try it and see (amazon prime, baby).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091PBALS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1#customerReviews

this is the type that has clips that fit over the existing mirror. why am i getting this when i have two decent cameras? well i visited my local tint shop (if you so cal guys need a good tinter, please contact me; 5 star yelp reviews) and he showed me a product that i almost put on my mom's car. its basically clear tint. while this may not be news to some of you, it was to me. he took a device that measured btu's and pointed it at the sun and then from behind the clear tinted glass. reading was 450 to 44, respectively.

i ended up getting the shade up from it, which you can barrrrely tell that its tinted. she loves it, i might add.

so my tint guy says alot of his customers now get this clear tint placed on the front windshield. i was a bit surprised b/c i thought you couldnt do that, but he says as long as it complies with the visible light law (80% or above), you can put film on your tint. heat rejection is about 45% he says, which sounds about right when you consider medium to limo tint block anywhere between 50 and 60%

he says that he doesnt recommend any suction devices placed on tint, so i'll have to buy the camera above as my current ones have suction mounts.

I'll let you know how it goes. I get it on Wednesday. The clear tint in maybe 2 weeks or so.

I am planning on getting one soon! Did a lot of reading and given the fact that a lot of drivers lie and insurance companies do not want to pay out but gladly take your money every month. Only thing I am not clear on right now is the legality of having them on base (for obvious reasons) and I had to do a LOT of reading over heat tolerances of these devices given where I am stationed right now. It can easily clear 140 in my 4runner during a summer day and sometimes I would dare say it gets to 200. I have no proof of that higher number but it takes 5 minutes for my 4runner to get to a cool temperature in the front.

I found a lot of support for this little guy and this specific vendor from a few locations regarding heat resistance, bang for buck, and quality.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/131208541342?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

After further reading it might just be something I have to take out of the 4runner unless I'm travelling out of nowhere. Seems even the $400 cams won't stand up to the heat 29 palms is known to have. That's fine with me. Most people on base are decent enough drivers (can't say the same when it comes to watching for a bicycle).

Thanks for turning me on to this. I thought the only cameras out there were the GoPro type deals that demand your first born so you can record you crashing on a bicycle lol.

I think the suction device would warp before the camera. I've had plenty of suction mounts give up the ghost from permanently being attached to the windshield. Hence, this clip on one seems like a better idea. We'll see how it works in practice.

Krypto's right about the heat up here. It's not unusual for my Scangauge to show an intake air temp somewhere around the 145-150deg range when I first start it in the summer. I can't imagine what it is inside our runners with the windows up. I've fried a rechargeable battery pack before that I forgot in the trunk of my wife's car. I would definitely consider a camera after the accident, I "caused" last year after a woman swiped a stopped car while trying to pass in a turn lane going 15 over and spun across two lanes only to hit the opposite side of my last vehicle. Luckily USAA paid more than the car was worth allowing me to pay off some bills and acquire my 3rd gen.

Bob, you have me completely sold on getting a dash cam; I just need to find one that will work for my daily driver. I want something that is mostly hidden behind the rear view mirror, both for the lack of distraction on my part (since many of them have LCD screens) and for lack of theft since I work in the ghetto.

The windshield of my daily driver (and most new cars) has a stippling on the glass above the mirror, so the camera has to have a view at mirror level or lower. One inexpensive camera that gets good reviews is the "mini 0803." Here it is in a car that has a stippled windshield like my DD.
http://www.spytecinc.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/4/1/41rzqzk9l_l.jpg

The rearview mirror has 12V power and most cameras are powered by 5V, so I would likely try to stuff a transformer and the camera behind the mirror to reduce the amount of wiring I have to do.

I just did the install of the autodim and now I have a 12v as well. I remember I used the 18-20ga to do the install but would that run the camera safely with the compass and autodim also active? I know it's not a ton of draw to run those objects but I just wanted to ask since I am not good at all with gadgets and how much they generally draw.

Also I found this for ya.

There's a couple of small cameras out there but if you're worried about the out of sight out of mind you might do better mounting it in the driver's side corner. Sometimes the most obvious places are the best places to hide.

I have to show people where the mic is for my bluetooth all the time and it's in that spot.

Not like we're all made of money, but these things are relatively cheap for what they could potentially save you in a he said/she said car accident. My deductible is $500/year. I could by several of my 720p model if they all crapped out.

My mom asked me why i dont have one in the back. Well as I understand CA laws, if you get rear ended, the other driver is 100% at fault anyways. It would be neat to see though someone texting and that "Oh s###" face right before they rear ended you.

Sweet: my camera arrived today in the mail. Can't wait to try it out. I think the biggest change will be the width of the mirror. Stock mirror on the Golf is 12" or so. This one is about 14". I'm interested in the additional depth that the mirror will add as well as the night time clarity of the rear view mirror itself. Let you fart smellers know how it works out.

I am considering one just because if you have video of the accident it can also prevent insurance fraud with injuries. Even if you aren't paying higher premiums for it you could save your insurance company some cash. I use that kind of thing as leverage lol.

It's a numbers game. What is the likelihood of someone winning their case when they rear end you and what is the chance of you winning your case when someone cuts you off and slams on the brakes? Now what if you have a camera at the respective end.

The front facing camera makes much more sense. This is where the insurance fraud aspects come into play. If you can prove you weren't at fault, that's a big deal. Especially if the other party is insisting you are at fault. It stands as a great independent witness. If someone rear ends you, burden of proof is on them.

After some close calls, I'll be buying one tomorrow. Drivers are crazy.

Be sure to click on 1080P!

It's a pretty nice camera. I might crank up the contrast to hopefully get license plates to show up a little better. It's pretty small, and mounts with double sided tape to the windshield. There isn't a great place to put it in my 3rd gen, maybe if the mirror sat a little lower or back from the windshield more. I put it behind the mirror on the passenger side.

I'll admit I was staring at your high beams most of the time.

For it being mounted a little right of center it still catches a very broad angle. I like it. You're able to get all the lanes, on coming traffic, vehicles on the side of the road and street signs. I don't think I'd monkey with it to catch license plates. It is possible to see them from a still (on the computer or the camera screen)?

I have witnessed California extensively for the going slow in the fast lane disease. Apparently it's an epidemic along with the 10mph stop sign roll so I can turn right and make you slam on your brakes disease.

I have only driven at night once (testing out my driveway alignment on tuesday night) and I forgot to pull the card out after that.

I figured out that an 8 gig card records about my average daily commute, or about 2 hours, which ever is shorter. I got my 32 gig card in the mail, so that will cover closer to a week's worth of video.

Got my dashcam today, this thing rocks. I ended up getting the "E-Prance Mini 0803" as recommended here (http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2014/6/15/mini-0803-probably-the-best-mini-dashcam-with-a-screen.html) by Techmoan, and mine shaft tested and roll approved by our own Seanz0rz.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61yzROxVYfL._SY355_.jpg

It does 1280p, but I'm using the 1080p HD mode with sound, stored on a 32gb Class 10 SD card (only $17!), and mounted behind the rearview mirror on my daily driver Nissan Leaf.

The rearview mirror has power for the auto-dimming feature, so the easiest route was to tap the mirror with a small 12V to 5V micro usb transformer I bought on amazon shown here:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7OJIsZYbYbo/VC9dhGO7TmI/AAAAAAAAOfU/aYK0jIzMJfg/s640/20141002_174441.jpg

I used double stick tape to attach the tranformer to the back of the mirror. Then I needed to hide the 5' cord. Rather than learning how to shorten a USB cable, I stuffed the excess cable inside a piece of heatshrink and double stick taped it to the back of the mirror as well.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KRuJ2BgVuOQ/VC9dU3WjDpI/AAAAAAAAOfM/fEJzxJGAaEQ/s640/DSC_0980.JPG

And here is the view inside the car; nothing to see here:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-vNqt-_7OSH0/VC9drgDHh5I/AAAAAAAAOfc/2nF2oDzkUaU/s640/DSC_0982.JPG

This is what you see if you look behind the mirror:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y9aKI3VOD-g/VC9du_nv7xI/AAAAAAAAOfk/OA3ACBEha84/s640/DSC_0983.JPG

Video quality is excellent. We all know Youtube drastically compresses video, so this doesn't do it justice at all, but at least you can see the wide angle view. **Be sure to change the video quality to 1080p HD in Youtube by clicking on the little gear icon--otherwise, it's not even worth watching.**
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPus6UnyyyE

In the raw video you can very clearly read street signs, license plate numbers, all the important things.

Bob and Sean, thanks for talking me into this. I hope I don't ever need to use the footage, but if I do, I'm glad its there.

I bought the model with no internal storage and no GPS, which is $99. (I paid $104, but the price has dropped.) The older 0801 model can be had for ~$70. After seeing techmoan's review comparing the two models, I was willing to pay the extra $30, but the original one is still highly regarded.

Ken,

Awesome you got the camera!

On another note, found this vid of a slow speed accident. Glad the girl is ok, but could you imagine if the guy didnt have the dash cam video in this instance?

Exactly why I purchased mine, to show how an accident that would otherwise look like my fault is not.

Wow Mike.

I am beginning to think these dashcams are bad luck. As soon as people get them, bad things happen. A guy on one of my other forums had just got his dash cam, and then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5YaS0w4EXTY

That was somewhere in the bay area.

Is there a capacitor mod for the 801? I looked into these a bit. The price is getting to where its easy to cough up the money for the piece of mind.

It has a small internal battery, enough to let it run a minute or few after you turn off the vehicle.

I think they also sell a cap model but it is more expensive.

That would be ok . I figure if I got one I would leave it in there out in the sun more times then not.

The instructions say to not leave it in direct sunlight or a hot car. I never took mine out until after the accident. I think it can live in there.

When power is cut (ign off) it records for 1 more minute then shuts down and closes out the file.

I was reading some dashcam forum about the heat issue and people aren't having failures, but occasionally they will shut down after 10 min of runtime after sitting in a really hot car all day. They are known to run hot, but not fail. The 0803 has a heatsink the 0801 doesn't have, but regardless, they seem to hold up fine longterm. I have zero plans to remove mine from the car on hot days.

Do I smell a race to capture something exciting? (excluding watching Sean perform a near perfect barrel roll!)

Looks like a great trend that we're all having... More toys and gadgets!

It didn't take long to capture a hit-and-run. As I approached, I wasn't really sure what I was looking at. I didn't realize until I watched the video later that the riced-out Civic rear-ended the Range Rover, then it takes off...you never see it again in the video. The Range Rover sees the guy running and passes cars in the shoulder to try and catch him. I saw the Range Rover pulled over to the side 1/4 mile later with no Civic in sight.

youll have to zoom in on a frame of that video and see if you can get a plate number.

I saw a couple near misses today. I will be putting my camera up in my DD this weekend.
