Just curious how many of you actually turn your phone off or turn it to airplane mode when you're on a flight.

The last time I flew, yes, I did. That was 2008. (I don't think I need to take my shoes off, so I don't fly much).

For me, there isn't much reason to have the radios on during a flight, and it saves the battery.

Also, I REALLY don't want to be the reason the plane goes down. Not that that would be caused by a cell phone, but still.

On a related note, going offroad I usually put it into airplane mode and then turn on the GPS so I can still use my phone with topo maps, but don't kill the battery looking for a cell signal.

Ok, so what spurred this question is that a coworker and I were talking about EMI testing of electronics for aircraft. (Some of our sister plants across the country test electronics to make sure the radio transmissions won't crash the plane). I asked him if he turns off his cell phone and he says absolutely because those rules are there for a reason.

But I reason that on any given flight, at least one person, if not dozens either don't turn it off or forgot, and out of the millions of flights taken since the invention of the cell phone, not a single one has crashed because of a cell phone. I was just curious to see how many people go to airplane mode.

I admit I turn mine off because I'm "supposed to" but knowing it doesn't make a difference.

I put mine in airplane mode. If the FAA is concerned about it, so should I.
