So I finally got a little bit of free time to work on mounting lights!

Currently I don't have an aftermarket bumper so I am getting creative with the stock bumper. The worst part about it is the sits in the valence are so thin and flimsy that nothing can be mounted there.

The good news is that the bumper is metal and sturdy too. So far I got a couple of 3x6" plates to mount the fog lights to that allow me to mount them with as little modification to the valence as possible.

The 7.5" light bar is going on top of the bumper centered which should take very little time to mount

Finally my led pods are getting mounted up by the windshield using cb off road ditch light mounts. I looked at the mount and I would have a hard time replicating it so I think coughing up the money for a solid product is worth it.

Waytek Wire should be delivered on Thursday and that will give me all of the bits I need to complete the harnesses.

Be cautious of odd questions. I haven't done lighting from scratch before but there is no time like the present!

The led lights were sourced from the retailer on pirate 4x4. The lights so far look great and I can't wait to mount them. The fog lights are used and from someone on another forum. They look like they work but it's cheap to replace a bulb.

Speaking of which I scored the Sylvania high performance bulbs for 20 bucks! Amazon is to be thanked for that deal.

Of course this post needs some pictures!

What were your light needs? Have the LEDs filled the niche?

Pics will be coming. I was busy bending brackets lol

They should honestly. I want to be able to see what's in front of me and off to the sides at night. Military vehicles recently have spoiled me badly lol

Well I have pics of the secret squirrel project I have been working on.

So far I am nowhere near finishing but I do believe I have the fog light mounts bent to the right shape to both aim correctly and shine the light through the valence.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/673/50AFiV.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/ip50AFiVj)

All I did was order a pair of lumber tie-ins for 1.25 apiece and bend them to what I need. They will be painted before the final installation.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/661/HbbAbp.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/idHbbAbpj)

Just a mock up pocture. Here is the pic of how they will fit with the valence.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/540/MBxl4W.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/f0MBxl4Wj)

Pic of the bent up mounts. Best thing about them is that they are easy to drill but hard to bend.

And how I want to install the led lights up above

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/674/i0AToI.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/iqi0AToIj)

All in all it's not a ton of light that I'm installing but it will definitely help along with the Sylvania's that I am waiting for in the mail. Tomorrow Waytek should be coming through so I can begin the wiring piece Friday and this weekend.

Also it might just be me but I'm thinking of keeping the valence off or trimming it because the 4runner doesn't look bad that way....plus the valence is a almost worthless piece of plastic that will get destroyed one day anyway. Opinions?

Finished painting the brackets tonight. Two coats of chassis saver should protect them from rust or anything else. Gotta go pick up some hardware tonight to attach the lights with. Waytek didn't come today so no cussing from putting harnesses together. I guess Friday will be the big progress day. Lots to do yet.

Got a little bit further. Mounting is just down to perfecting and tweaking. I think so far they interface nicely and should be far enough away from the valence to keep any melting from happening. I know these things get fairly hot.

UPS is really hacking me off. For some reason they delayed my package....AGAIN. I would love to get the harnesses done so that I could start testing the lights and finishing the installation.

Next up will be the light bar and maybe at payday I can get the ditch light mounts.

Looks good! Was wondering if those mounts are gonna be sturdy enough to prevent unwanted vibrations? Seems as though the bracket is too thin and might vibrate too much causing annoyance at night. Maybe figure out a way to box the bracket?

Kryptoroxx

They seem sturdy enough. They are made to tie together 4x4 timbers so I figure holding a 1lbs light should be okay. I will find out when I can actually turn them on whether they vibrate or not.

Made a lot of progress today although it doesn't look like it. I was up to my ears in wire, solder, connectors, and shrink wrap. It just got too dark to reliably keep mounting the harness.

I decided to design and build a modular system just in case I want to sell them or move them to another vehicle. The light bar and fog lights are run together but on separate relays. Sadly this is the only harness I was able to complete. When I wire the interior I will wire the ditch light switch so I don't have to do the whole firewall thing again.

Had a few questions though. I am planning on using 20ga for the switch wiring. I figure since it's what the stock harness uses that it will be fine for me to use as well since it's just a carrier signal. Everything that carries current to the lights is 16ga or better (12 for the fog lights). I will be wiring the interior tomorrow hopefully.

Also any ideas what I should measure off to center the light bar? I tried a couple of different things and I know I'm close...but I love to be dead center too. I'm kinda OCD lol.

On to the pics! As a side note I hate putting weatherpack connectors together....

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/673/sT4c3f.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/ipsT4c3fj)

I also ended up hiding the wire inside the bumper since there's all that empty space in there. The tough part is figuring out a 120F heat proof securing for the wiring harness. Zip ties work for a while but become brittle, hose clamps are downright difficult to use and have limited application. Anything glue related (short of JB Weld) will eventually fall off. I might just JB Weld some clamps to the backside of the bumper and call it a day. It's not as if there will be serious force put on the harness.

Came up with an idea for securing the harness and I ordered the CBI ditch lights. Here's the link and I went ahead and got the switch too just to complete the package. Pretty sure it would have taken me a while to bend a bracket like that and it wouldn't have been powder coated either.

 I might be able to change your opinion on that. The naval hospital here on base delivers between 900-1200 kiddos every year. It's like an assembly line.

I did finally get some work in after squeaker passed out and the result is that everything is mounted well but I have to do the hard part (for me at least) of the wiring tomorrow along with oil change, fuel filter change, and I think I'm going to try and squeeze in the rubberized undercoating tomorrow as well. Undercoating shouldn't take long at all with a lift.

I should have had my thinking cap on because I knew that I would have to drill holes and bolt the light bar to the bumper. I used a 3/4" line clamp to hold the main harness in and after that I tried several different things but ended up using bailing wire to collect all the stray lines after that. It's not pretty but it will hold. The line clamp eliminates the danger of the harness dragging on the ground and the bailing wire just hides everything from sight. None of those pieces are long enough to drag.

Not a lot of progress that shows much but I had some fixing to do before continuing with the wire install. I had another style grommet that I needed to use vs. the hard one designed for just 0ga through the firewall. It fits perfectly and I included the link below. I also had to re-route wires that had previously been wired lazily (by this guy). Lots of back pain is anticipated for tomorrow morning but at least 99% of that is done. I went ahead and ran 5 relay switch wires as that is the max my fuse box will take plus there's only one more light that I believe I will need that will have to run off of a switch...and that's a huge light bar up top.

I am going to attempt to wire the fog lights to the parking light power for the switch as it will keep me from leaving the buggers on. I am fairly certain I will notice if any of the others are left on.

This has really been a great fuse box even for the little that I use it for. Stupid easy to wire up and it's waterproof as long as all of your connections are also waterproof. Really wish I could have worked on it more today but the in-laws are slowing things down.

Curious how you like that fuse box. I was thinking about it a few years ago and decided to go in a different direction. Now I am wishing I had gone with that.

I would not have even considered it if I had not asked the question over on TTORA a long time ago. I was swamped by all kinds of clean setups, dual battery ideas, etc etc. but one swore up and down on that fuse box and I liked it because it would allow for relays and fuses as well as providing a waterproof means of protection.

He also gave me a great place to order all the pieces of the fuseblock. WayTekwire.com is the site and at first it was confusing to me but I knew next to nothing about wiring. Now that I've learned a bit of it (a very small bit) it is easier to order from the site and the prices are really good. It takes a special crimper to do the metrapack connectors but I got mine off of Amazon for 20 bucks and after all of the connectors I have done....they have already paid themselves off.

On another note it was nice to meet you Sean! I don't get out much and I am in the middle of nowhere. That bracket will work perfectly I believe. After I get the lights working I will see what I can do with it. The harness looks great too. My fingers are starting to itch just thinking about getting some time off to tear apart the rear axle. I might just see if I can swing the rear axle mods and save the tundra brakes for later.

Finally I have a few pics. Not many as I was busy doing family stuff as well. I am now ready to re-install the fuse box tonight and with any luck I will have a package from CBI tomorrow containing my last switch and some ditch light mounts so I can wire up everything once and for all.

I am always down to wrench man. Just gotta know what you're wanting and I can make it happen....as long as you don't want me to weld. I need more practice at that lol.

In other news FedEx and UPS have apparently joined forces in delaying my packages.....so now I'm Fed Up. Right now wrenching is the only brake I get from the in-laws.

However if there's a CBI sticker in there I will be appeased.

I did the ditch light harness today and have that ready. I'm considering installing the locker and regearing the front before the Colorado trip. I could always get the rear axle out again for the disc brake mod and rebuild the axle then. Plus I would just re-use the oil when I did it.

I am going with Lucas for the gear oil and redline mt-90 for the cases. Doing the elocker and regear also allows me to do all of the bushings since they are pretty much shot.

Yipee! I got my mounts and I even got to install them. The rest of the time was spent trying to get the ditch light single switch surround off of the switch so I could add it to the 4 switch panel that I made. No wiring work done at all. It was such a beautiful day too so naturally everything popped up all at once. I will say that these ditch light mounts are built really well. I don't plan on taking direct artillery fire but if I do....the ditch lights will remain in place.

These mounts install on top of the hood hinges so one at a time is a good way to do this. All that you have to do is remove the old bolts and put in the new.....oh and unbolt the fender so you can nudge it out of the way.

All done. Just gotta catch up on the wiring. I have to reconnect the CB and the rear cigarette lighter that I re-wired for full time 12v. Then I have to plan how exactly I'm going to pull off the elocker retro and a regear in one weekend. All I have left to buy is the MT-90 and the Lucas gear oil and I am golden. I am fairly certain I could finish the rear in a day but I'm not sure if I have enough time to do both.

Another late night update. Wiring is coming along nicely and I am glad that I took the 5 minutes to look at the e-locker harness Sean was nice enough to drop by. I would have to get into everything I am into now so I retraced my steps and ran the extra wire needed for the elocker out to my fuse box. The part that had me worried though is over. I always hate trimming interior pieces just because I want it to look perfect. Without further ado.....mod porn.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/538/tpZIcF.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/eytpZIcFj)
Just some closeups of the wire run I chose to employ. If you plan on installing lights and haven't yet....it's a lot of wire so organize it.

Fuse box finally done. It's easy to wire but it is on the unforgiving side if you do not perform good crimps and a wire backs out on you. My particular weakness is 20-22ga.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/673/LYCnwF.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/ipLYCnwFj)
The tan is off.....but I didn't think it looked too bad. I wanted the switches to be the only black like the rear locker switch above. The picture is upside down for some reason.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/538/HJAl3p.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/eyHJAl3pj)
The madness continues.....I found my switched 12v and I am fairly certain I found the parking light power wire so this is a good thing. I am using the parking light positive for providing the switched power on the fog lights so I don't accidentally leave them on. I am fairly certain I won't leave the LED lights on just because of how bright they are.

So I should have all the switches wired up tomorrow and then I can finish the back half of the wiring harness for the elocker after that.

Sadly there's no love on the elocker yet. I am going to double check my side of the wiring since I know the harness works. I never got the chance to test out the locker although I don't have a specific reason why it wouldn't. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's something simple I just overlooked though. The dash isn't lighting up either so I am thinking maybe I swapped up the switch and the fuse?

I think it's all the same for dashes since I can see the O/D light and ECT lights in mine. All of the lights work amazing though. I was very impressed with the LED lights and the fogs will help with lighting the road. I will get some night shots here soon.

The indicator light won't illuminate until the diff is actually physically locked. You may have to turn each axle output to align the splines. The motor only moves the spring that actuates the collar.

I started another thread dealing directly with the elocker. The lights work great and I will get some shots at night soon. I just haven't been out at night yet.

Hey here are some test shots of the lights. I had completely forgotten that when you mount lights you want to test them out. I have used the 7.5" out on the road and was pleased. I was travelling back from Granby on county road 1 and it is unpaved. I started out at about 3 am so deer were active and there was no moon either. I didn't use the ditch lights as I had them covered for legal reasons since they are above the headlights.

Ditch lights only:

7.5" bar only:

Everything but the headlights:

I tossed in the headlights but honestly they barely make an appearance with so much led goodness:

Overall I am pleased with the lights. It definitely improved the situation when I was in Colorado and I only used the driving/fog and center 7.5". Eventually I would like to get those Russian projectors but for right now this fills my needs for more light auxillary offroad and improved my on-road vision considerably.
