View Full Version : Lets see your garage!! (or I need ideas for organizing)

The move is finally finished for the most part and what I have discovered is that no matter what size my garage might be I seem to find a way to fill it to the brim with stuff and leaves me wondering how it got so full! So maybe I am in need of some organization ideas or just in need of a yard sale but I'm open to suggestions.

This is what I moved from:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/909/lB1JHt.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/p9lB1JHtj)

I finally got my 2 car garage and there is a lot more space for sure but.....I think I can do better. Ideally I need a space to hang my TRX from for working out and a tad more space to get both cars in (although after the Monstaliner I am fine with the 4runner sitting outside.

This is what I was able to manage with making my own shelving:

Sweet, a garage thread. I think we have a very similar space and similar amount of bikes, tools, camping gear and crap in general. You've done a lot with your space so far.

Now I'm not going to b*tch and moan too much about my desire for a 3-car garage, because this is the first time I've had a half way decent garage ever since I left home for college. I rented one house that had a garage, but it was a 1-car, barely fit the 4Runner, and the concrete slab floor had a 1" wide crack down the middle from which black widows would crawl out every time I even thought about doing anything in that garage.

So here's my 2-car, full of 2 cars and tons of crap:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q_5gYw3tc5M/UNSYqPodUdI/AAAAAAAAI8g/1qteJ9WUqQw/s640/%255BUNSET%255D.jpg

What you can't see in the photo is the 4Runner is crammed to one side of the garage, literally an inch from the junk piled up on the side. My wife has trouble getting the baby and carseat out of her car and you simply cannot open the passenger side doors of the 4Runner.

With the 4Runner out, you can see how narrow the space is due to the kayak and all of the crates:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UQd5RYzghbo/VFL01EeEXDI/AAAAAAAAS2s/YBlZ92YUzKE/s640/DSC_0997.JPG

Things are somewhat organized, but there's just too much stuff, with 5 bikes taking up a lot of space and I'm to the point where I'm storing stuff *under* the 4Runner right now, like the bike rack and lumber. If I get any more stuff the 4Runner is going to need a bigger lift.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MaCxBHApf5o/VFL02tTKkOI/AAAAAAAAS24/90lX-NYiCCY/s640/DSC_0999.JPG

I do have a nice little alcove though, that gave me space for my tools without cutting into the space of the garage. Other than organizing the stuff on the shelves a little more, this part of the garage probably won't change much:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wG7Q3FkRtnY/VFL01EdpwHI/AAAAAAAAS2w/SPmEZkisdyQ/s640/DSC_0998.JPG

So here's what I've done to start rectifying the situation: we got a third car (that didn't help, haha), we had a baby and now have 3 strollers, 4 swings/bouncers and a ton of baby accessories (oh wait, that didn't help either), I added lighting and a plywood floor in the attic above the garage to accomodate more stuff:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ZCdt1BFQFeY/UoKvVNsh_JI/AAAAAAAAOg0/cp8HG6DpRvg/s640/%255BUNSET%255D.jpg

and 2 weeks ago I built this from a kit to get the worst of the clutter out of the garage:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-97UetxetzMg/VFL2wFxKShI/AAAAAAAAS3E/YQ6Yd0GIHp4/s640/20141012_181642.jpg

I have already purged everything I don't need, so my grand plan is to start moving a few things to the attic and shed, and install some of these overhead racks from costco to get the stuff off the floor and allow me to move the 4Runner over another 2 feet. That will give my wife more room for getting the baby in and out of the car. The fate of the kayak is unknown.

http://images.costco-static.com/image/media/350-11773136-847__1.jpg

Last step would be to texture and paint the garage.

I'm not sure that posting my "problems" helps you much, but the six-week old baby at home keeps me up at night and I have a lot of time to think about solutions to problems that don't exist, as well as real problems like my lack of space. The attic and shed storage were a couple of those sleepless night ideas. If that extra space isn't practical or possible, I think you can do a lot with crates, shelves/racking and a little organization!

Cough....well you kind of inspired me too actually and since I am fairly certain I will be here for another year or so I am looking into some freestanding metal shelves for the back true "storage area" to make more room for the scion (yeah I have the toaster car)

I really like the cubby for your work area. Its nice how it doesn't really take up any of the garage floor space. Also your shelves are better than mine. What you can't see is where a couple bow quite badly in the back lol. Too many darn books in boxes.

I found some shelving that might be worth looking at though. For $100 a pop you get a rack that will support 5k with some pretty good dimensions. It's made by Edsal and the model is trk-482478w5. Its on amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Edsal-TRK-482478W5-Shelving-Length-Height/dp/B00FZDU4US/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=1BA021W3HZWV0Q70PM2Z

Also I am fairly sure my rocket box is roughly as hard to store as the kayak. I picked up my overhead storage for something like 30 bucks. It could easily go above the acura. I had to look for the link but hopefully it will help you out. The provided straps are junk though. Invest in some paracord and you will be all set. It has held my rocketbox for a year or so.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EUL2DO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I feel your pain on the kiddos man. Just went through a binge of 24hr bugs here with my 1yr old and then the pregnant wife. Lord knows how I was spared but in any case I took pics of how I hung my bikes and a close up of the rocketbox storage. The rocketbox hangs approx. 80" off the deck so you don't bounce your skull off it when walking under lol. I felt that was an important detail ;)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/903/SDNHkb.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/p3SDNHkbj)

The bike hooks are meant for the ceiling? but they work just as well for the wall. I think they were 3 bucks apiece at the depot.

I agree with you on the 3 car garage lol. 4 years ago I had never had a garage of my own but I still had the majority of my tools and stuff. Kinda funny how stuff piles up just about as fast as the bills lol.

Whenever I do get around to building a house there will be two garages. One to park the cars and one for projects and stuff. Fixing and building stuff on my own saves me money and helps with relaxation.

Oh yeah with the bikes and kayak make sure they are bolted in a stud....I had a devil of a time finding one with textured walls but it was worth the effort.

A separate car garage would be fantastic, but I'm going to be in this house for a while.

I have looked at different options for the kayak but ultimately I either need a second one for my wife (and a tandem at that so the kid can come), or sell it for now and do a new sport like stand up paddleboarding. Lots of parents let their little ones hang out on the board while they paddle, and they are easier to store.
Speaking of which, check this out. (Another 2am web search when I couldn't sleep.) A guy sheetrocked into the attic space to make a recessed space in the ceiling of his garage for bikes and paddle boards. I can't do that in my garage since my new attic platform is directly overhead and I have a waterline and a gas line crossing perpendicular to the rafters.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_EP5koktwts/VFMRalCiGMI/AAAAAAAAS3Y/s1Ch44UhKhA/s800/user97414_pic17855_1332448912.jpg

I looked at the gear track stuff and it's too pricey. The costco overhead storage is pretty reasonably priced.

Do you have attic space?

Kryptoroxx
10-30-2014, 11:05 PM
I do have attic space but since technically I rent I can't go that far lol. Plus these houses, no matter how good they look, were built in the 70s and I wouldn't put weight on those tresses without finishing engineering first. Additionally since I don't own I also need to be able to break down my shelving....and put it back up somewhere else with minimal notice.

The only good thing about being in military housing and moving all the time is you learn what works....and what doesn't quickly.

My father put one of those folding staircases into the ceiling of his home and it worked out really well for him. Interesting place for gas and water lines. Those are not too much trouble to move though. Just the added expense of adding pipe and getting it inspected. Depending on your local rules you might even be able to do it yourself.

I really like the Costco overhead. Quality stuff and if I could I would put it in. Great idea for tall garages.

I've found it necessary to use my attic space. Lucky for me the previous owners installed a floor and retractable stairs. We have tons of old kids stuff, our camping equipment, ice chests (7), my hitch basket, some bike frames and wheels, etc up there. The attic portion is above my garage and is the size of the two car garage.

With the kids and constant coming and going I never tried to get two cars in the garage, it just wasn't important. Rather I built my tool bench and put my tool chests in the cubby created by the in-laws room/office. We have seven adult bikes and they are hanging off the wall by the hooks Kyrtoroxx showed. I put the hooks into 2X12's and then mounted the 2X12's to the wall. The hooks bite a lot better in the wood and I don't have to worry about anchors in the walls or hitting studs. It also allowed me to keep the bikes close together to fit the most possible. The kids each have a bike as well as a scooter, they live on the floor in the corner and I have the distinct pleasure of kicking them into the corner on a daily basis. I thought about hanging them or organizing them but they are for kids and I don't want them to grow up as anal as me. Plus I want them to be able to get their own sh*t and play without help. We have a large flat driveway with another spot adjacent to the driveway that is gravel. The kids ride their bikes and play in the driveway and backyard every day so I don't cram the driveway or garage with cars as they get scratched up as it is.

In the attic I use Rubbermaid Action Packers to organize gear. Most of the other stuff are in identical large Rubbermaid containers. Each Holiday has a few, party supplies and other stuff that doesn't get used on a daily basis. Because of the easy access, weekly or monthly stuff is fine as I find myself up their anyways. In the garage I have 4 Rubbermaid containers I use under my work bench. One for car/bike wash stuff, one for oil changes, one for extension cords and one for painting supplies. The other side of the work bench has my welding table that holds my welding machine and about 80% of the items I need for a project.

I'm pretty particular about my tool chests and keep only tools in them. IMO screws, extension cords, boxes of things, etc don't belong in a tool box. I use organizers with small drawers for screws, rivets, fittings, etc. Plano boxes keep nuts and bolts. I'm not super worried about my tools getting stolen as I keep the drawers locked and they are so large and heavy you'd need dudes and a trailer to take them. I keep the drawers locked mostly because of the kids. They both help me in the garage so they know tools and how to use them but they are also sticky handed monkeys that like to climb. When me moved I almost broke my leg when all the ball bearing drawers on my large 40" tool chest opened and tipped on me. My chest and other tower are heavy enough to kill a little person so I instill fear in little ones and lock them.

Flammables and poisonous drinkables live in a fire cabinet I picked up years ago. If you want to get in trouble in no time flat leave an unattended can of spray paint in the reach of a kid. 10:1 they will not get paint on anything else but their face and red eye brows are not as popular as you think. Locked in the cabinet are spray paint, spray cleaners, oil, etc. On top of the cabinet is my drill press and 8" bench grinder.

Other than that I've got stuff on the walls of the garage. Folding tables, folding chairs, and assorted other things hanging from hooks. I've got a few shelves and a large radial arm saw but they have blended in well and typically have more stuff around them. I feel I'm better at making a shelf or box rather than purchase ready made wall organizers. I can't believe what they charge for storage systems that were created only to fill pages in a catalog. I don't care for them or their looks.

I'm due to take pictures of the house and the stuff in and around it so I'll snap some pictures this weekend.

I'm going out to home depot today to scope things out as far as shelving. I really would like an 18 or 24 inch deep shelf and I can pack at least 500 lbs on without it looking weak.

Yeah I like those but the heaviest stuff I have right now is books and while those are heavy they aren't that heavy. I sprung for a 5 shelf 4k limit from edsal and while I am not thrilled with the quality I am not worried about it falling down either. I am considering getting the heavier duty one for 100 bucks and wire shelving for the opposite wall where I store parts for projects and such.

I definitely opened up some space and cleaned up a little. I will see if the additional room for the car helps or not overall. Once I get my welder (which will go where the bicycle rims are) I will put the gym in and see where I stand from there. I might end up with a spacious one car garage and the 4runner can sit outside.

I actually just put the runner inside along with the grill and there is still space for another vehicle....but definitely not anything larger than a Camry. There's going to be a storm up here if I'm not mistaken soon so why not use the shelter.

Looking good! You're doing better than most--many of my neighbors that have three car garages only have room inside for one car, at best.

When I was searching for garage organization I came across this picture. I love it.

And the polar opposite (I'll never have anything in my life look like this):

I would give that first picture 50 bucks to let me pick whatever I wanted out of there lol. Yeah that second pic is way way way too ocd. If I had the funds I would probably have shelves and all plastic boxes with a general label but those are so specific that it's like looking at a word bank.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/673/CaSRkH.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/ipCaSRkHj)

Finally stuffed both cars in. Not too bad as I can get in and out of both vehicles without becoming paper thin but I think I will end up with just one car in at a time. The Scion actually has a paint job worth protecting plus it's getting cold in the desert and I still need to stay in shape.

Proof of how small the Scion is. It makes the 3rd gen look long and bulky lol.

I was able to snap some pictures tonight. Everything needs a little tiddying up but the garage is such a commonly used space in our house it's always in some sort of disarray. My garage is like a working shop with something always being worked on. I haven't felt the need to spruce it up much since I like to use it more than I'd like it to be like something in a magazine. Without my work bench we can fit both cars in the garage but again it gets used so much by 4 people it would be fruitless to park both cars in there.

Here is my work bench. It's in it's third house now and I never got around to building something nice which is suiting seeing it gets the heck beat out of it. The main center and both outside corners have steel mounted to the top for durability and something to whack or weld on. The book case/thing was build my yours truly using scrap and 10 minutes. It too is in it's third house and by some miracle hasn't fallen apart. Under it are some led strips powered by my solar generator. The VHF radio is also powered by the generator which is the black box on the top left of the book case/thing. I used an extra ProClip receiver and mounted it to the wall. With it I can use the cradles I use in the cars and mount my tablets or phone. I like this because it keeps them out of my work area but still usable for music or a youtube video when my talent runs out.

Here is under the work bench. To the left is the welding table with welder, tools and scrap. To the right are the oil change, paint, extension cord and car wash bins. Just next to that is one of three floor jacks and cribbing type wood for when I like to get chancy.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lg8j-8SDLLc/VFhn5HGBeNI/AAAAAAABBL8/u9FxVPTFpbQ/s800/20141103_192554.jpg

Here is where most of my hand tools are. I have separate storage for my travel/offroad tool kits, powered and hand saws, clamps and larger carpentry type tools. The wall that juts out was an addition to the interior square footage creating a 4th room. Although a larger garage would be nice I actually like the additional interior room.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-whzFANDBihs/VFhHSTkUkZI/AAAAAAABBKM/A8-XsJrN088/s800/20141103_185951.jpg

I totally forget where I got this cabinet but it was like a week after I cut off my thumb which places it in September, 2002. I had a reconstructed thumb that I was hoping would take and had to load this thing in the back of my old truck with one good arm/hand and one not so good one. It's heavy because the right side is/was a safe. The door is just a door and behind it was a safe door I cut off. It was locked when I 'found' it and I had to cut the door off to use it. The left side are regular file drawers but thicker. They house some PPE, most of my electrical stuff and I totally forget what is in the bottom drawer. The right hand side is spray paint and other spray cans, oil, fuel type stuff, gear oil, etc. I had to put a lock on the door to keep the kids out of it (remember red eye brows?). I bolted a piece of 1/8" steel to the top and then the grinder and drill press. It should be top heavy but because of the safe wall part it's pretty sturdy. The day it isn't is when it smashes a kid or the hood of my wife's car.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-pBinfVwX5PE/VFhJDxAgzWI/AAAAAAABBKg/6HXaW3HuWgg/s800/20141103_190048.jpg

Traveling anti-clockwise in the garage is the bike corner. At a minimum I ride 5 days a week year round so A bike had to be accessible all the time. That one bike differs from day to day and sometimes it's two in one day so I just made them all easy to get to and off the ground. The lower area has the compressor with a 28 gallon tank and an additional 9 gallon tank behind it against the wall. It's out of the way and turns on when I need it. It's got a coupler on it and I have a hose reel near the work bench on the other side of the garage. Air line travels through one of the conduits on the wall. The radial arm saw is awesome and was built the same year I was born. It dims the lights when it's on and commands authority. So far we're still pals. I use the lower part of the stand to keep paint, stain, caulking guns and my miter box and saw. The green Rubbermaid is our tortoises' winter resort.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--i7_e3MddEY/VFhJFSqrmsI/AAAAAAABBKo/Of2Y-Z1wlgc/s800/20141103_190140.jpg

The rest is storage of stuff we use frequently or stuff that doesn't fit in the attic. The four folding tables and folding chairs are super handy to have around and seem to get brought out or taken somewhere with us all the time. The grey rolling thing is a The North Face display and weights more than 100 pounds empty. It holds bike parts and carpentry tools. I put some peg board on the front and had it loaded up but the kids got into all of it. It's all spendy stuff and nice things I use so some of it got stashed on the table of the radial arm saw or in the grey metal bins. All I left for them is a dull hand saw, a staple gun and duct tape.
Under the raised wood platform are long lengths of angle iron, tubing and pipe. The shelf has my wife's field gear for work and my go stuff for CERT. On top is a paint sprayer, abrasive chop saw, sanders, circular saw, universal multi tool and recovery gear. The tables, chairs and bike stands are corded to the wall and held tight with some spring attachments.

I welded this pull up bar with the remaining pieces of the Thule rack I cut up to build my bike rack. It's the best thing I've put in the garage. It's prefect to hang things on to dry or to paint. I've also used it with ratchet straps to hoist. Right after I bolted it up there I pumped out 4 pull ups with the plan to get good at them but lost train of thought. I do some every now and again but mostly admire my welds when I walk under it. The hose and cord reel keep that stuff at the ready and off the floor.

My wife's car is pretty small but has plenty of room around it. We come and go so much if it we put 2 cars in there the thing would be scratched to hell all over. As shown it's about 7 feet from the wall on the drivers side and about 4 feet from the stuff over there. More room is left on the passenger side since the kids and me need room over there. If stuff is left on my work bench my rule is that it gets thrown away, if it's not mine. It's one of the places I can do work and have to myself. I purposely leave it gritty or dirty to thwart any idea of encroachment. Note, the attic stairs door is visible over towards the stop sign.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-PiabMzi20ak/VFhKJeBI2TI/AAAAAAABBLQ/8GkynfY6ttI/s800/20141103_190333.jpg

I finally got rid of my snowboards and extra skis when we moved in. I keep the skis we use, their poles, 5 fishing poles and 3 fly rods along with my large floor jack handle up on the ceiling. They rest on an old pair of Yakima bars held to the 2X4's by large eye bolts.

All my yard equipment and other large non garage things live in my 6X12 shed. I purposely do not use it as storage for house stuff otherwise it would be filled and in my way when doing yard stuff. I do keep some large pieces of plate steel and expanded metal in there but mainly because they are big, heavy and have sharp edges.

Man you've got everything pretty organized!! And an awesome workspace to boot. Also had some great ideas on kid proofing a garage which thankfully I probably won't have to worry about for a bit....but they don't stay small for long either.

I like the pull up bar but it's really close to the ceiling. I'm planning on hanging mine at 8 ft or so with 4 ft of width whenever I get around to it.

I gotta start looking for more tool storage as well in the near future. Currently the big red cabinet is my haz storage as well as my location for wood working tools and precision equipment. Also not sure if I will keep metal on hand or whether I will just get what I need for projects and have a small scrap bin.

The shelf is 4 feet high (clear), ~4.5' overall, 12 feet wide, 4 feet deep. It was built to keep the table saw from becoming a shelf. Right now it is very inefficiently packed on top. It has some furniture that needs to be sold or donated, and some boxes and such, but generally needs to be cleaned off and stacked with boxes, bins, etc. We are debating on keeping it, but for now, it stays.

All of the stuff in front of it is in flux, but generally half of it is yard sale/donate, half is good stuff to keep.

Back corner of garage:

Trying to compress as much as possible so I can pull the truck in. With these shelves on the back wall, I will have about 18 feet to pull in, which is just enough for me.

Width wise, I will have about 9 feet, the truck is 6. Not much room, but it will have to do.

Scored these tool chests for less than half price.

Everything on the far left roller dolly is 4runner supplies and tools.

Right now, we are working on some electrical to get florescent lights in. They will be on a 4 way switch, so all 3 doors will have a light switch to turn them on. We installed the jack-shaft opener a few weekends ago, man is it nice! Now we have full height in the garage with the door down. We painted the floor a couple of years ago, but it didn't last. I prepped the hell out of it, so I am not sure where we went wrong. Ohwell.

Goal number one is to get the 4runner in. But, getting light and other electrical done, plus doing some organizing and cleaning in the process is helpful. Maybe next weekend I will get her inside, but probably the weekend after.

You guys are making me jealous. I wish I had a garage to organize.

Sean, those tool boxes look great, and I like that new garage door!

Yeah, they aren't the premium chests, but they are ball bearing and will hold basically everything we want to put in them. And yes, thank god we got rid of that terrible garage door!

If they hold tools, don't fall apart, and don't fall over on you they're worth their money in my opinion. Craftsman is a fine brand. Most of my tools are that flavor of steel. I wish I could afford better but honestly I have never broken a single Craftsman tool.

Looks like you have a bit of work ahead of you!! The wife and I are constantly going through the storage get rid of excess baggage. Now if only we could remember to mark at least the general idea of what is inside lol.

I'm guessing that you had the old fold up garage door before this. I had a buddy with one of those and I used to crack my head on it if I wasn't careful.

That's a HEFTY shelf!! You won't have to worry about overloading that.

Pretty cluttered here but there is always two cars in it unless I'm tackling big projects. Been clearing out a lot of junk the past month, threw out a lot of stuff but it piles on back somehow.

I have all three different grades of Craftsman chests and like them all. In some ways I almost prefer the quiet glide version over the ball bearing version, and they are less expensive. I have noticed that Craftsman branded chests seem to hold their value really well--I couldn't find a used one for much less than a new one.

I've always been surprised at the deals Sears throws out on their tool storage. It must be the hand tools that have all the mark up. They'll throw you a deal with the storage then cash in when you fill it. I bought my 40" chest when I was 19 and it was a year old from a neighbor. This was before the good deals but what made me want it is it was a Waterloo chest. I had Waterloo chests at my job at the time and loved them. Craftsman used Waterloo for their higher end boxes but stopped years ago.

Sean, you're garage isn't as bad as you make it out to be. It looks like you have a lot of space and the willingness to purge. If I was closer I'd help you out. One thing I didn't notice in the pictures is the VW. Do you still have it? I thought it was that, that was slowing down the clean out and rebuild of the 4Runner.

VW is on the side of the house, we moved it out of the garage a couple if years ago. Remember, this is after more than a few weekends of work. Also, we have a 5x8 box trailer full of stuff, plus most of the pickup bed. I've about reached the limit on tossing stuff. We still have boxes of "hardware" and "stuff" that need to be gone thru. Yesterday was the first time in a while that you could see the floor.

I find it difficult to throw things away, but when I haven't used an item in years, it's time to go, and once it's gone I never miss it. I threw a post into this thread hoping it will peer-pressure me into keeping on-track. We will probably continue to accumulate stuff at a faster pace than I can throw stuff away now that we're having kids.

My wife made a comment a few weeks ago that made me happy. She mentioned how much she appreciated having a garage to park her car in and how nice it was for keeping it clean and not having to scrape ice in the mornings as she always has. I see that as justification to spend more time and money on the garage. :-)

Keep up the good work guys.

I think I am about done although I am keeping my eye out for an old metal cabinet I can use to go under a work/welding table. It won't be anything big but 3x4 would be nice as most of my projects would fit on that.

I got the other shelves in to hold all the 4runner projects currently on hold but collecting parts none the less. It looks good and it's not flexing like the old shelves were. I will have a picture tonight.

Here's the final pic of my project shelves. I think I am finished for the time being.

Been making progress. Last weekend I nearly took the end of my thumb off while pushing a fish tape through an electrical box. It's healing up OK, just a slow process. So far this weekend, we've nearly finished doing up the lights (something that will get crossed off the list tomorrow. I am trying to get my 4Runner in before next week's storm. I think I can make it... We'll see.

Next picture will be a very bruised 4Runner stuffed into a very full garage!

I was about to tag your thread and see how everything was coming. Looking forward to seeing progress pics.

Even though I don't have a running truck, I am starting to think about a roof rack and a roof console.

Going through a redesign or a rebuild?

Front half of the roof rack was destroyed and now without a sun roof I have all this overhead room to stuff a proper console.
