I just saw this on t4r the other day. That forum is 99% garbage but by shear numbers they hit the mark every once and awhile lol.

cheapest I could find is $135 with free shipping

You can see the fit is not perfect, but nor has been the fit of the custom ones I've seen over the last 6 years. Ive read in the past that these cheap ones are prone to UV fading so figure in a $3 can of spray paint down the road. It dosnt address the concerns of breaking it on a rock due to the outside routing, but at least its not $400 if you do shatter it.

I still like the idea of the active dust filters and the bowls, but when I looked into mounting one on the hood there was a space problem for one large enough to feed the 3.4 at open throttle. This would work to get a fancy topspin up high enough to clear.

I like it! It is not as nice as the Safari, but if it gets the job done, it wins in my book. Just about anything looks better than black ABS DVW pipe...

its tempting...I still dont have a fix for my fender wells after the hacking. my intake is sucking straight from the wheel well and I clog filters at three times the rate I'd figure. It also looks like it would fit on whats left of my fender.

That was my reason for buying my snorkel. I cut out my plastic liners when I first got my 4runner and was ruining air filters at an alarming pace.

It is tempting definitely. I would have to do many things to make it work though. I do have an air box sitting on a shelf. I think I need more side jobs lol.

Something to look into, I know Safari is about to release the ones for the 3rd gen 4Runners but i'm not sure the price is going to be much better then an ARB

Safari makes mine (but I think ARB sells them in the USA). I wonder if TJM will release one so long after the 3rd gen was made.

Its kinda foolish at this late in the game to sell the 3rd gen one. No one has been sitting on the fence because they had to source a Tacoma intake boot. When you are in the $400 dollar range for a luxury item that dosnt exactly bolt on, then the extra price and hassle of the boot wont be a turn off.

I'm still contemplating this. Last thoughts I had on fixing my intake were to to take it up over the cab anyhow for extra dust avoidance and flexibility with pre-cleaners. I can make one for cheaper, but...lol I may wait for ever to get that motivated and lets face it, I make some pretty ghetto stuff haha.

You don't have the taco tube? Mine had it, the 97 in the junkyard had it.

troyboy162

it might be. I have a tight elbow exiting into the wheel well and then a tube taking the intake 3/4 back to the firewall.

Seanz0rz

That's the Taco tube. Later models didn't get it I think. They just got the elbow. I'll have some pics in a few weekends of what the inner fender components look like without the fender bolted on.

gents,

forgive me for poo poo-ing on the snorkel party, but that is the most ill fitting snorkel i've ever seen. also, why get a snorkel if you dont ford deep water?

#1 for me is dust. Getting that intake away from the tire really helped my air filter out. #2 is, it's always deeper than you thought it was. #3, it STILL makes me smile when I see it.

clean, cold air not coming from my gutted wheel well haha. I lost the skirts that separate the wheel well from the engine bay when I did the body lift. Then I lost the wheel well liners when I hacked my fenders. I now suck dust off the tires and heat off the exhaust manifold I'm eyeballing it since it solves all my problems quickly for $125-$140 and gives me a couple benefits.

It looks like it has a small gap where it meets the fender. my truck is not very visually appealing when you get that close up on it anyhow lol. I'm still debating it since $140 can buy me alot of filters.

Did Christmas with my mom Sunday since we wont be seeing each other on Christmas this year, this is ordered and on its way, will have a install write up once it gets here and the weather cooperates, oh and once the tie rod ends that have tons of play are installed and the l/f wheel bearing that just started with the play is replaced or if I switch my spindles to manual locking hubs instead of paying someone to press out the bearing and screw it all up lol....

looking forward to what you come up with. Some of the truck look like its fits better then others. I'd guess thats all in how you freestyle the templet.

have you guys considered that one snorkel mod that runs into the passenger side cabin area? i believe brucets created it, chuck (calrockx) did it as well. for me, id rather not cut into sheet metal if its not necessary.

I at least got two fenders to try this on (the donor trucks fender too lol) looking forward to it

I've seen those posts, the idea is cool but I am not sure about engine noise in the cabin, I recall they say they didn't hear as much noise, but I'm not sure about you but I can hear every little belt chirp and squeak over the knoby tires (and the clunky suspension parts and bad wheel bearing lol), there is still cutting involved, and while it isn't visible, it still kind of a problem to me, friend of mine hit a nice deep mud bog and it threw off the timing belt a few teeth enough to cause the engine to back fire and shoot exhaust out the intake.

and like Sean said, it will give me a big smile every time I look at it lol!

Also Bob, if you have seen my truck lately, a hole in the fender by a tool will probably be the best looking part on the truck (not including the driver lol)

I run the air-conditioning in my truck and don't want extra dust pulled through the cab. All the people who've done it claim that the engine doesn't suck in that much air. physics dosnt back that up so I always discredit everything they type about the mod.

My favorite intake mod was the one where it exited the fender by the antenna and had a prefilter there. That's still on the plate but between sourcing the parts and custom fitting them, $140 and done sounds good.

Go ride around somewhere dusty and the next day you go to start the truck-if the AC is blowing out the vents on high you will get hit with a ton of dust! I swapped my KN filter out for that reason as well.

I have been watching and will wait to judge whether I like it or not. I would have to undo or further customize my intake to accommodate the snorkel but at least I have a waterproof box that I made. I really need a plastic welder to make it all the way watertight but 99% is watertight already.

The pressure, I can't take it lol

The problem is not the clod but the fact that now I have to work in an apartment complex parking lot and I don't have a shop readily available and a free lift to take up while the truck is down.

The good news is I made progress today and got the tie rod ends in, will probably schedule an appointment later this week to get an alignment done, and the package with the snorkel has made more progress on getting itself here, so.

My only other concern right now is the left front wheel bearing, I am going to source out a used spindle and stock upper control arm assembly to put in for the time being (not hitting the trails any time soon due to moving and other financial obligations like getting both vehicles through Delaware state inspection which shouldn't be too hard....)

Aw that stinks Avy! One of the reasons Im still home, cant find a place with a garage I can afford. Apartments are pointless as Id just wind up sleeping there and be back home working on things rest of the time im not at work.

Wanna trade? I need a power steering pump, cant find the right one. Replace the steering box, old one IDK how I turned it-out of the truck it wont turn, cant align it-still pulls badly to left. Wheel is off now and still pulling with used steering box in. Ive concluded the wheels must make aligning it impossible, nothing else is bad in the frontend.. Time to sell that MF..buy it and SAS anyone?

It's a nightmare if you ask me. My fenders were waaaay easier. Comes with a cutout and I suppose it would work......but I had to adjust for ditch lights....so just a heads up.

How is the fit?

How is the fit?
The fit is actually really good. I have no complaints about fit, quality, or hardware. It's just the cutout leaves a little to be desired. I would cut out the main piece and then double and triple check the bolt markings before drilling. My fender doesn't look so hot under the snorkel.
