Important Information:

Communication:

Ham only run. If you don't have a ham, I have 1 extra hand held, but I highly encourage you to buy one and get your license. Contact me if you have any questions about this.

UY simplex primary 146.430MHZ (2m Ham)

Cell service is spotty at best. You may have a chance to check in with family at some point, and are encouraged to do so, but don't count on it!

Vehicle Requirements:

Vehicle in good working condition, with no known faults
Working 4WD
1 spare tire within 2" of other tires
Working, suitable jack
Front and rear recovery points
Ham Radio in good working order

Note: Stock Vehicles are generally welcome on this trip. The road conditions are somewhat unknown. Most appear to be typical desert/mountain dirt roads, but we will encounter rocks, soft sand, and the unknown. Some areas present unrelenting corrugations, and others have undulations that can catch you off guard and swallow your vehicle. This is not a technically challenging run, but a scenic drive over some of the most beautiful desert areas found in California. The long distances and rough road are the challenge. Terrain will vary from rocky desert pavement, extremely soft sand, off camber sections, deep ruts and washes, and a riverbed. There will also be some water crossings that are easily crossed. All vehicles must be 4WD.

Required Equipment and Supplies:

Enough fuel to travel 225 miles in 4wd
Minimum 1/2 gallon water per person, per day
Food
Well stocked, current first aid kit
Tow strap (no hooks!) & shackle
Method to refill tires, if you choose to air down (recommended)
Basic tools
Sanitation Supplies - anywhere from a shovel and TP to a PETT toilet and privy, your choice.
Emergency Info Sheet (http://www.ultimateyota.com/entry.php?14-Planning-for-the-Worst-The-Emergency-Info-Sheet)

I will not be doing vehicle inspections, but I expect you to have all of these things in your vehicle.

Recommended Items:

Rear locker
Full size spare
Spares for common items
Still/Video camera with spare batteries and extra memory
Binoculars
Fire wood
Wide-brimmed hat

This is by no means a complete list, but merely the high points of what should be considered for this trip.

For those uninitiated to expedition style desert travel: The best way to travel is to travel light but do not forget comfort items. Three days off pavement without a good night's sleep will be miserable!

Sanitation:
At some point during this trip, you will have to use the bathroom. There are no toilets where we are camping, and none along the road. #1 is fairly easily handled, #2 is up to your comfort level. I personally have a bucket with seat, Double-Doodie bags, and a privacy shelter. What you bring is up to you. Pack in - Pack out is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.

Firewood:
We will be camping 2-3 nights. If everyone brings 1-2 bundles of firewood, we should have plenty for 3 nights of camping with a good fire.

Weather:
Weather can be very unpredictable in the deserts. This event is a rain or shine event, meaning we will be traversing the desert even if it is raining. Temperature can vary wildly. Higher elevations can see significant snowfall during the winter, and lower elevations frequently break 120F in the summer. Temperatures are expected to be between 50 and 80 in the day, and 30-50 at night. Layers are suggested, as well as extra socks and gloves. We will be camping around 4000ft each night. It can get quite cold.

More Information:

Since we are doing only a small fraction of the Mojave Road, Dennis Casebier's "Mojave Road Guide" does not really apply. That being said, it is HIGHLY recommended for future adventures. It can be purchased here: http://www.desertusa.com/web_cart/db/pages/5094.html
I also have a previous edition for sale if anyone wants it. PM me for details.

Probably the best resource is looking at the past trip reports.

Route:

Final Distance: 200 miles from interstate to interstate. You will need more fuel than this.

There are a few miles of paved roads we will have to travel. I have tried to minimize this as much as possible.

Fuel is available at the Cima Rd. Exit. Fill up there. Next gas is in Barstow,

Right now I am at 194 miles on the track which is very rough. It is probably closer to 220, maybe more. That's a bit longer than I want, so I will have to cut something. I am also looking to do a bit more hiking this trip.

Made some changes and now its 197. FML

We can do it. A long day of wheeling isnt the end of the world. I tell ya I'm done trying to plan trips to the T. It takes way too much time. It never works out exactly anyway unless you pre-run and aint nobody got time for that! From here on out each day is point A to B and thats it lol. If its a long day oh well everyone will sleep soundly...If its short, break out the moonshine lol.

Jaydee914
01-02-2015, 10:04 PM
I second that, Troy. Let's just get out there and go, and make course adjustments on the fly!

Seanz0rz
01-02-2015, 10:04 PM
I'm at 181 now. Some of that is pavement :(

I have some huge doubts about a major portion of the track whether it's physically and legally passable. I think I will pre-run that section, wouldn't be a bad shake down run for the 4runner as well. It would be a day run, you should come!

Winging it means a 10 mile backtrack and probably an extra 30 or so miles

troyboy162
01-02-2015, 10:13 PM
Yeah a day run would be fun. or.... haha

FINALLY MARC!!! Will be awesome to have you along!

If we do a day prerun, we probably wouldn't see anything worthwhile, just a check of the roads. 2 of my maps have the road, one does not. They are physically there in Google Earth (although some of it is very faint.) I'll decide what to do closer to the event (and when the truck is road worthy).

I will post up more info tonight, including the GPS track. Campsites will be emailed prior to the event.

So I'm leaning more in the going direction than anything else. Hopefully I just sold my old rear diff but that should give me enough for a radio or a pile of metal to melt for a top rack lol.

Really excited about going. I've done a little exploring in my back yard but not much.

I looked at the Mojave West thread and you were sitting at a railroad crossing that is about 30 minutes or so from my house. I was in Afghan for that summer though I think.

Seanz0rz
01-03-2015, 12:02 PM
That railroad (http://www.ultimateyota.com/showthread.php?9870-Mojave-Road-West-11-4-2011; First picture) is what we will be following, with our goal being Kelbaker Road, where that first pic was. Just a big question if that is UP property and if there is a wilderness boundary (which I have some anecdotal evidence of).

We need to be on this "road":
http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae38/hamiltonfabrication/Mojave%20Road%20West%2011-4-11/IMG_3686.jpg

I am very happy with my Baofengs. If you don't end up getting one before the trip, I always carry at least one spare.

Seanz0rz
01-03-2015, 07:03 PM
We're right at 190 now, with some minor changes to the route pictured in the first post (I will update later).

That's about 70-80 miles for the first two days, and the change on the third day.

Looking for camp sites now. Of course there isn't much at the 70 or 80 mark, but we will find something.

troyboy162
01-03-2015, 08:15 PM
We should be OK on that road. Railroad property can extend 15-100 feet from the center of the tracks. This section has power lines so that should be off UP land

Also topo maps show parallel roads to the rails in that area

Seanz0rz
01-03-2015, 08:56 PM
I think so too. I will have alternate routes planned just in case.

I am done with the planning. Not too bad. I have a few camp sites in mind depending on how we do time wise. I will email those later.

First post has been fully updated (at least until T-2 Weeks) with all of the info. Looks like we are about 240 miles fuel stop to fuel stop. 200 of that is dirt. It will be the longest I've had to travel between gas offroad. Shouldn't be too bad though.

I CAN'T FRICKEN WAIT!

Kryptoroxx
01-06-2015, 03:31 PM
The route is perfect for me. I will be coming up my usual shortcut to Vegas through kellbaker and cima/nipton rd. Always wanted to explore the offroad up there so I am looking forward to this. Only thing that's still foggy is the delivery date and work but I should be able to get away for the weekend. The wife has approved me for a probably status. Great thing about the route is for the most part we are slowly travelling closer to my house.

I'm starting to gather supplies and stuff. I have most of it already but good fresh baby wipes are the key to being comfy in the outdoors. The weather should be perfect around that time. Right now it's in the 20s for the mornings and just kinda miserable.

Seanz0rz
01-06-2015, 07:12 PM
Yep, it's nice to have a short drive home and the longer drive starting out just heightens the anticipation.

It won't be too bad cell phone wise. I'll also have other ways of staying in contact in case you have to bail.

4x4mike
01-07-2015, 01:25 PM
I had cell reception for a lot of the trip last year (Verizon 3g and even 4g at times). Most notably at camp. During the day my phone would chime here and there letting me know I had an email. This was my indicator I was in range.

I spent a few weeks studying the materials before I took the exam. Some people love the stuff, but I was bored to death. The only way I got through it was to read the material on the beach in the Dominican Republic. Every 10 seconds I would come close to falling asleep, and found that looking up at the beach hotties would reawake me and I could read another 10 seconds. To each is own, but buy a study book and book a trip to the Carribean. You'll do fine. Welcome to the forums.

Here is a direct link to the PDF I studied from (this is the newer version for the current (01 JUL 14 and later) test.

http://www.kb6nu.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/2014-no-nonsense-tech-study-guide-v1.1.pdf

To find a test near you, plop your zipcode on this page:

http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-exam-session

You are encouraged to learn more, and go for higher levels of licensing. If it is a hobby you are interested in, there is MUCH MORE to learn. If you are in it like most of us are, it is a means to an end and you will likely never go beyond your tech class license.

http://www.ultimateyota.com/showthread.php?10382-BaoFeng-UV-5R-136-174-400-480-MHz-Dual-Band-DTMF-CTCSS-DCS-FM-Ham-Two-Way-Radio

That thread has a bunch of info about the inexpensive Baofeng Radio. It is perfect for a beginner, but we highly recommend getting a mobile radio, at least a 2m and a 2m/70cm is preferred. This will enable the real benefits to ham, namely the long distance comms.

Thanks! I'll check them out. Once you have a license, are there hand held units that have good range without requiring a large antenna on your car? I see that all of the vehicles from your 2012 trip have long antenna on them.

Seanz0rz
01-13-2015, 05:45 AM
The Baofengs will get around 2-4 miles under normal circumstances. We have had more, and they will receive a strong signal from very far away, but the 4 watt transmit power doesn't go very far. Even with an external antenna, 4 watts will be limited.

My mobile Yaesu FT7800 has 50 watts of power, and with the right geography will 40 miles. Radios like this also cost several hundreds of dollars (I'd suggest buying used).

The long antennas are mostly CB antennas. I have a 4 foot Firestik CB antenna, but my 2m/70cm antenna is ~20" tall.

I also have to add that for this trip, some of these roads may not have been driven in several years. Brush marks are likely. I know you have a new vehicle and would really hate for that to ruin your day. Just some fair warning!

I will add you to the first post.

This makes 6 vehicles, but I will still leave it open. Someone usually has to bail last minute, which is completely understandable. Stuff happens!

I will work on getting the GPS tracks up tonight. We have 8 weekends until the trip. I am confident I can be rolling by then with a mostly complete vehicle. All the lights and cool stuff might not work, but it will drive!

troyboy162
02-16-2015, 06:14 PM
man I'd do those springs for you if you were closer. I've changed so many I can do them in a hour tops. Jerry cans can live on the roof rack for now. By my calculations you are one weekend away from ready :) Sean is two spray cans away from ready :)

Is your man Battlewagon gonna make it? I got a pickled egg for that jar head :)

Kryptoroxx
02-16-2015, 06:21 PM
Lol I don't thin he's gonna make it in his own rig. He might be able to make it as a rider but it's kinda slim. I know he wants to though.

The jerry can holder is for the roof. It's just a little something that will keep it in place.

troyboy162

The expo guys found a container that held two Jerry cans for roof rack duty. Maybe you've got a tote at home that would work for the weekend.

Perhaps....I will take a look. I was seriously just going to use some of the spare tube I've got to make a holder and then use a strap to hold it in. It would be a clamped on accessory instead of a welded one.

troyboy162
02-16-2015, 07:35 PM
are your cans metal or plastic? I have metal and I am plagued by the wear my metal holder has on them. Granted it will take a crap ton of miles before I wear a hole in the cans, but steel on steel seems to be a no go for the long haul.

I will finalize all of that today since it's a day off. I haven't had any chance to do it the last few weeks.

I will get the info packet ready for distribution hopefully today. Not too much to change from last time except camp sites, route, etc.

I am barely on schedule since the weather turned to crap on me today. I am still doing the wiring on the tailgate. Will have pics up later but looks like I have a full day tomorrow to get the rack done by next weekend.

Most of my camp stuff is ready. My throne needs padding but otherwise I'm pretty well on my way. Looking forward to this and crossing my fingers leah doesn't go into labor too early. She's due the 21stish so cutting it close lol.

Well I found some new things to work on. I did a muck about tonight since lauren has been such a street queen for a while.

My locker seems to be a little sticky? It will engage just fine but likes washboard to when I try to unlock. If I try reverse or just letting the truck roll it will not unlock. I did accidentally drive on a bit of pavement but that couldn't have put a bind on the locker I don't think.

My air filter likes to come apart and it kills the engine. It's just a loose rubber fitting but something to fix anyway.

I have a grill to modify. Some nice person was tossing a perfectly good charcoal grill out. Kinda small but it can go on the roof rack easy.

My interior needs to go back in lol.

I need to finish my led lights too

I need to do the springs and shocks.

That about does it! I have some custom emblems if I get around to them but that's a back burner.

I've got a clunk in my suspension. Gonna figure it out tomorrow at the hobby shop. Hoping it's just a link sliding back and forth and not a ball joint

Seanz0rz
03-02-2015, 08:18 PM
Check the A arms up front. Loosen them up with the wheels on the ground (ride height) and torque them down to the FSM value +10% (if you wish). Mine always clunk there if they aren't tight. Could be shock mounts and just about anything really. Suspension clunks are a pain in the ass.

Also look to make sure your factory jack is properly secured...

Feels more like the rear but I have been watching my lbj's for a while. I also need to fix the camber up front. I've been meaning to do it for a while and it just seems to slip. It's not much but it needs to go on the rack.

Yeah I did the tacoma setup. I know about the turning radius. Total came to 272 with shipping so not too bad. I will probably end up doing the steering rack before fall anyway. That will refresh the front end completely and I can drive pretty much worry free for another 85k at least.

^This made my morning!

It might still happen. Even if it is just for a day I haven't had shine in a long long time. It's more prevalent on the east coast.

Kinda reminds me of when we trained with the royal marines on lejeune. We had a bbq that allowed alcohol (300 U.S. Marines + 500 U.K. Marines = MP's showing up with a bus and riot gear)
In any case one of our guys was from Tennessee and so we introduced a couple of them to shine.....the results were amazingly funny 30 minutes later. To be fair we warned them not to take more than 3 shots but just like jarheads they pushed the red button anyway.

Who knows but it was a great time. The downfall was someone brought their fiancé.......one punch turned into 12....and yeah then it snowballed. Since they held it in french creek at the bricks what happened is the occupants of 6 other barracks and their duties came out either participating or trying to stop it.....and participating.

It's a crap shoot. If anything test it out now. Last year I filled up my metal 5 gallon can and ran it on it's side on the roof for about a day and a half with no leaks. I tested it for a week on it's side in my garage so I knew it had a chance. I'm not sure if you're talking about the MFC Scepters but if so, perhaps they can be drip free with a new gasket and tight. If it's the CARB models there is a chance if you get the cap on just right. Again test it out.
