So I finally sent my design off to get cut. It was my first cad piece so I ordered just enough to make one to ensure I had everything right. In my own hurry to get the bracing metal I chose tube that was too small for the shackle pin. My design was right though which is a little bit of consolation.

Bending 3/16" by hand is not the easiest thing in the world but it is possible. I find cussing and bleeding it into place to work best lol.

Cool project. Are they going to be welded to the frame?

Good idea on the 3/16 to bridge the sides. That will reduce twisting and bending but it also looks like a PITA. Hows that bending going? It looks like that next bit would be pretty hard to do.

Thanks! Not a completely original idea but I would like to think I have improved upon it.

I'm going to drill and bolt them in the stock tow hook locations. I am going to bump to higher grade bolts if I can but I also would rather the shackles give before the frame too.

Yeah that bending could make ghandi violent. The current plan is to weld the flat and then pop it in the vice and tack it. It should work?? I don't know exactly how strong tack welds are so it might be a short bead.

Cut notches in the flat piece that are as deep as the base material, this way you can lay in a nice bead and not have it stick out.

Bad idea. If you're pulling hard enough to bend anything, you're pulling hard enough to potentially break lesser bolts which will turn those things into a missile. Go with grade 8 bolts.

Went ahead and ordered the other side to be cut. I am probably just going to get some 2" receiver tube and make a shackle for the rear receiver.

Either that or I could just go ahead and make the rear bumper. I've had my eye on the HF tube bender. Pretty sure 1.5" is all I need to construct it with some plate to brace.

By tube bender do you mean pipe bender? Because I don't think HB makes a tube bender and you can't bend tube with a pipe bender. Or are you going to make the bumper out of pipe?

Swag Off-Road has some adapters for the pipe bender to bend tube.

Edit, it appears that's only for the tube roller.

That's what meant to type lol. The tube roller would let bend tube correct? For 180 bucks it's hard to beat.

Pipe bender:

Tube roller:

Roller makes very large radius bends, and probably not what you want for a rear bumper.

I've had my eye on this guy for a while. Someday:

That's a nice bender!! I saw some manual benders out there. I'm sure I could probably use those since I'm not interested in anything over 1.5. I've got the grunt to bend it but I know it would be nice to add a hydro mod to it later. I also saw jd squared out there and it was a decent price as well.

The manual benders require bolting to something unmovable, so that is a killer for me. I also already have that ram sitting in my garage. Swag offers a manual to hydro setup for those common manual benders, but I think I rather just have the Rogue.

I have a table that could take that kind of force. I just couldn't bend in a horizontal direction. It would have to be vertical force since I can't bolt anything to the floor.

Yeah, and those aren't really designed to be mounted vertically.

If I end up buying one this summer, you are welcome to come by and use it. Just gift me some scrap tube and buy me lunch.

A little bit of progress. I was hoping my other two pieces would come in the mail so I could finish both but I was able to finish one anyway.

This thing is really stout. There's no doubt in my mind that I could recover off of this piece lol.

Made the other bracket today. Welding went a lot better and the assembly was smoother as well. Got down to drilling and couldn't find my other long bolt. One bracket is drilled and it looks good. I want to make sure it is good before I drill both.

The brackets did not come out looking the same although the same pieces were used. The bash plate I added came out at a different angle on one. I am fairly well pleased with the turnout though.

One hole started out a little off center but the final location was right. Gotta get some bolts tomorrow.

It's funny how things can come out differently. How's the welder working out for you?

It's working great! I am moving towards getting a co2 tank but I am very pleased with it so far just on flux. Thanks for the recommendation for the 10lbs spool. I had my first 2 wire misfeeds yesterday and I have done multiple projects on the larger spool.

Not sure how the bash plates came out differently but there was a delay in between the first and second of a couple weeks. Both are very very sturdy though. I think the next welding project will be a standing desk for the wife (not 4runner but those things are expensive!) Wish I could find a butcher block desktop for cheap lol.

I ground down the lip on rhe one side but on the other it fit just like it was supposed to. I am going to start saving for a real tabletop drill press I think. The wandering killed me on this project. I wanted 1/16" placement.....and I was fighting for 1/8" so not very good. I had to play with the holes to get them straight.

I like them. Eventually I would like them to tie into the whole front end idea i have cooked up but I gotta get there first lol.

Thank you!

I actually do want to try them out. It would be the first real test of my welding skills. I'm sure I'm not the worst....but you certainly need to know what you're doing if you are making parts that are used for recovery.
