Not super early. It will snow a bit Thursday/Friday so I'd like to give the roads a chance to warm up a bit.

Maybe meet up 9 or 10 ish. After the trail we will hit the burger stand with the purple Gremlin out front.

It's like 45 minutes from my house lol! How can I refuse an opportunity to test out my shackles?? At least they should be done by then. All I have to do is build the other one.

sorry guys, I have to cancel this one. Truck is still not in any less pieces than it was yesterday, despite 3ish hours of work. I'm ready to push it off a very tall cliff.

I'm still open for going up there if you'd like to meetup Krptoroxx. I'm running a stock 2014 4Runner Trail with 31" OEM tires. I was thinking of hitting some other trails to.

Wish I was closer. I would give you a hand in smashing stuff so you could do a shakedown on your rig.

I was actually thinking of linking two trails together since Jacoby trail and Rattlesnake canyon are linked by Burns Canyon Rd. It would make it a little longer. Watched some videos on Rattlesnake and it seems like a pretty easy run although snow and water would complicate things.

http://backcountry4x4.com/SC4x4TrailsHome.html

There's a link to the map I was looking at if you're interested. If not that's fine. I can do Jacoby Canyon and save Rattlesnake for another time. I will most likely have my daughter with me and maybe a buddy or two. Just a few of the guys from base if anyone.

That would make for a nice day. Jacoby should take an hourish, burns canyon should be another hour-hour and a half. and Rattlesnake would be an hourish depending on stops. Nothing crazy on any of those trails, just lots of pretty scenery. We traveled that route on day three of our "whole bernadino" and I think we finished by noon even with a side trip up tip top mtn.

Honestly nothing crazy is a good thing for 2 rigs on 31". Some of those rocks can be nasty and right now big bear still has snow and water making trails a little more slippery.

I'm still waiting for the go ahead from the wife but I think it's good so far. She's a definite no but I will have my daughter with me and possibly my son. He needs some more driving practice.

Where do we start from? I live in Newport Beach so it will take me a while to get out to the east side of BB.

You're looking for Rattlesnake Canyon rd in Landers. Looks like it's about 10 minutes longer for travel. The start point is just a little farther away and down off the mountain area. Rattlesnake Canyon ascends from the desert up into the trees. I've done it before on Burns Canyon Trail and it was really beautiful climbing out of the desert. It shouldn't be hot tomorrow either. I figure lunch in BB might be a good way to go considering the cooler weather that rolled into the area yesterday.

This was a great trip! Rattlesnake starts off pretty slow on the fun factor but ended up being a worthy trail. The scenery was amazing as it transitioned from the desert to mountain.

Burns canyon road is pretty much that. A road. Jacoby trail was very short but exciting in places. After those though we were both out of time and split from there. Natalia was giggling a lot and every time I checked on her she was knocked out. The kiddo seat got bounced a few times so I'm sure she got her excitement in. Marc took a lot more pics and video than I but here's my stuff.

I gotta say it was an absolutely beautiful day. 60s and 70s all day long. Wish there were more that could have made it. The 4runner is going through another deconstruction phase before the heat of summer comes.

This is along Rattlesnake Canyon Road just before the cattle guard.

The road included mostly soft sand until it narrowed down. Then it got rocky.

At the end of Jacoby, John aired up and headed north on Hwy 18 while I stayed aired down and headed south. Not even within a mile, I saw a dirt road called Smarts Ranch Rd. (3N03) going off to the left and so I took it. It headed to the Cactus Flat staging area. Instead of continuing along 3N03, a trail shot off to the right and headed up back up to Hwy 18.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z249/boyfester/San%20Bernardino%20NF%20-%20May%2016_2015/IMG_1416.jpg (http://s192.photobucket.com/user/boyfester/media/San%20Bernardino%20NF%20-%20May%2016_2015/IMG_1416.jpg.html)

I then headed back up 3N16 past the landfill and instead of turning right on Jacoby Canyon Rd. again, I headed left on the easy 3N16. There was an old mine on the left called Doble Mine.

Probably the weirdest thing we encountered today were some miners on foot (man and woman) along 2N02 who had no food and half a gallon of water between them. We stopped and gave them some bananas and tangerines and I topped off their water jug. I offered them a ride to Big Bear, but they wanted to go to Yucca which was in the opposite direction of where we were going. I hope they made it to wherever they were headed.

Awesome pictrues!
that's a pretty cool spot. There were two different stamp mills right in the same area at different times. The big ore bin by the trail was a scam built to interest investors to a mine that never did well.

this is the mine that fed the ore bin and mill, poorly... lol.

Yeah that did take the cake for odd. They didn't plan very well but something tells me they weren't exactly truthful either.

Their water was clear so either they had just gotten some water from someone else or they were just trying to catch a ride. Also they weren't lacking for body fat (as in really short on food) and their packs were poorly placed and packed so long distance hiking (yucca was 25-30k). Plus he should have known where they were if they were truly from yucca.

Lots of odd people from out that way and not all of them are friendly. These two were polite enough though. Hopefully they stopped for the night instead of trying to make yucca.

Awesome pics!!! I am bummed I missed it, but at least I was productive!

As for the two hikers, Peyote is a hell of a drug...
