I just purchased a 1996 T4R Limited w/ E-Locker and figured I would start a slow build thread. This is called "Operation Mall Crawler" because my friend(who owns a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon) doesn't think 4Runner's can offroad.

My 1st vehicle ever was my 1986 4Runner(where RedRunner_87) comes from. Was kept stock, with 31" Interco Trxus tires. That thing went everywhere and never left me stranded, I regret selling this every day. Had the power package(power windows, door locks and mirror's) and mint interior and exterior.

My 2nd "offroad" rig was a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited. Had a Rubicon Express 3.5" Super Flex lift, Trail Ready Rear Bumper and 32" BFG M/T's. It was super flexy but man I broke something almost every time I went out.

Got my Plasti Dip wheel kit in today as well as the Ultra Guage. Got the 1st 2 pages set up on it, and found it is throwing a P0120 and P0121 Error Code. So I have added a TPS to my maintenance list. Which could be why I getting a hesitation and when I was on the freeway my RPM's would suddenly drop and then pick back up. Anyway here is the Ultra Gauge set up for now. Might move to a different mount in the future.

I have the DIPYourCar wheel kit, Plasti Dip for the grill and fender flairs, TRD stickers and now the new Passenger Side Headlight and Clear Corners. Just need it to not rain for a couple days on my days off so I get it down. Next step is all maintenance parts.

Take a look at your ball joints. It's pretty nasty if those break. Especially the lower ones. Camelback toyota is an amazing discount source for oem parts. I use them almost exclusively. Good prices too.

Make it yours and have fun doing it.

When you take the TPS out bench test it to see if it's really bad. It may need to be replaced but it might still have a bit of life left in it. Mine threw a code for awhile but never acted up. I didn't replace it immediately but when I did I kept the old one as a trail spare just in case.

I've got an Ultra Gage and I like it a lot. I keep it in the ash tray and rigged up a spring loaded (rubber band) that holds it in place. When I don't need or want it it tucks out of site. Because I can I have 5 pages set up just so I have an eye on as much as I can. Somewhere I have pictures of the pages at idle and freeway speed as a baseline in case something starts acting up and I need something to compare to.

Take a look at your ball joints.

X2 on the LBJ and Camelback. While you're under there look at your sway bar end links and sway bar bushings. You might want to also install a transmission cooler if you don't already have one.

I was driving her back from a friends house and every once in awhile on the freeway the rpms would dip like it wasn't getting and throttle. So I was kind of suspecting the TPS might be on the way out, and I found the OEM part for $35. Figured I would just replace since I am going to be cleaning the MAF and TB anyway, and it will all be taken a part. I am going to be research some different mounts when I order one for my Camry and move the Window mount to the Camry. I will figure out a new mount for the Gauge in the Runner.

Mine had a similar stumble (actually several different times) and I always traced it back to plugs and wires. Since you have no idea when they were replaced, I'd go after those as well.

I second the LBJ comments as well.

I am going to run the OEM plugs, NGK wires, clean MAF and TB. Most likely going to get the AIRAID MIR to clean up the look of the engine bay and replace the TPS. Hopefully that will get her tip-top and through winter. So I can save for the big mods, probably at some point get 4XInnovations Sliders during the winter.

Got the new Passenger side headlight and semi-adjusted. Plasti dipped the grill as well and I think it looks much better than the chrome. Debating doing the bumper black or keeping it chrome. Should probably replace the driver side headlight sooner or later as well.

Got the running boards off, and it makes it look like I got a little lift. Blacked out the rims and emblems. I got half the limited cladding black, debating if I want to keep it black or make it silver again. Tomorrow is engine day.

That is true. I painted mine with Plasti-Dip so I can convert it back whenever I want to. I will probably just go with black for a bit and see how they hold up.

Got the AIRAID MIT, OEM Plugs and NGK Wires on it. Still getting the P0304 Misfire code. This about all the work that is going to into it for awhile. I have to move to Southern Colorado so I hope it makes the trip. Then I will spend a month at training so it will end up sitting while I do that.

I am curious if it is an injector going bad. I feel that may be my issue but it will not throw a code to save my life -_-

When I first bought the 4Runner, it ran super smooth. Now it running super rough, and I just replaced the plugs and wires. It still running pretty rough and throwing the P0304 error code. I even switched the coil packs to see if the error code moved to the other cylinder and it stayed. The next step down the list is the injectors. I am going to run some cleaner through it when I drive it down to my parents to store for the next month or so. Hopefully with the cleaner through it, the idle will smooth out. If not I will be taking it to a shop before winter.

I was going to mention the coil packs, or at least to switch them around. Are they Denso packs? Does it look like any of them have been replaced in the past?

They are the OEM packs, and they all look the same. So I am assuming they are all original and have never been replaced.

Thanks! It is getting there, I am not doing much to it till after winter. But I will be part hoarding here pretty soon. That is why I painted under the headlights, it was pretty bad with rock chips.

Now it's an individual/starting company. Mstudt over on t4r. He makes solid mounts though.

BTW I have always wanted to get the weather techs and just never got around to it. Those things are pricy new.

The weathertechs are so nice especially if you live somewhere in inclimate weather, or you offroad a lot. I had the Husky liners in my Jeep and I liked them as well. Easy to clean and make them look nice again. I was lucky enough to jump on the group buy and got a decent deal on them. Wasn't really planning on getting them, but couldn't pass up the deal.

I hope these help out. The superflex in the rear should help the rear out a lot. I am not expecting much from the front, coming from a SFA rig I had before. But any improvement is better than none.

That's not bad at all! I plan on removing my front and rear sway-bars. I didn't have sway-bars on my Grand Cherokee when I lifted it, wasn't too bad.

There's a grommet for the brake light. Use that. Easier, won't wear with the rear door, and it's an easy run up the side panel and into the middle of cab for your cb.

Thanks, so far loving the lift. Alignment and tires are going on this week, I am going with 285 KO2's, which I am kind of dreading because I live at 8K feet lol.

The sliders are awesome, the only problem I have is that they hit the body when off-roading which is slightly annoying. They ran me $370 with upgraded paint to bedliner.

On a past vehicle that was really heavy and had long sliders I developed a slight bend in the mounting arms that would allow the slider to hit a body seam under the door. I was able to bend the body seam towards the frame and it gave enough clearance it got rid of the noise. Off the top of my head I can't think of what it looks like under there on the 4Runner but I think it's similar.

I believe it is right where the front and rear door meet. My buddy got the same sliders but without the kickout and he is getting the body knock as well. His theory is that body mounts on the 4Runners suck and is allowing the body to flex more than other vehicles.

The sliders really should be about 1/2 inch below the pinch weld to allow flexing of the body. You may be able to hammer it away from the tube in those areas.

In theory they should be pointed to the side and down away from the hood. I won the brackets so I figured why not put them on. Still deciding on lights.

My buddy and I decided to partake in a 3 day adventure in the Telluride area. He has been really wanting to get into the Overlanding scene and has been looking at the new 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD OR. So we decided to take out my 3rd Gen 4Runner and see what she could do. Our 1st stop on the list was Ophir Pass and camp at Alta Lakes.

We decided to take the long way to get the Ouray and go through Cottonwood Pass and down. This way would an extra hour to our drive, but neither one of us had taken that Pass. The top of the Pass was pretty cool, turned out to just be a well maintained dirt road, but offered some great scenes.

Quick review: This trail was extremely easy, but pretty beautiful drive. Not sure if I would do this trail again, except as a way to get to Alta Lakes. It could have been because we were already on the road but overall wasn't too impressed with the trail. Seeing the town of Ophir was kind of cool though.

After we broke down camp we decided to head down to Telluride and spend part of there day before we would hit up Imogene Pass. Telluride is a pretty cool town, and the free Gondola is an added bonus.

I would highly recommend doing Imogene in reverse, starting in Ouray. It's a lot more technical starting in Ouray.

Switched up the ultragauge mount from the window down to where the shifter is. Window mount keep losing suction when it was cold. I get my new(used) transmission this weekend, hopefully I can get that installed here soon.

Delayed shifting coming to a stop; basically feels like a N drop, delayed shifting from D to R, if I'm backing up a hill R will pop out and back in, and if you are going down a hill and have it in 1st(for example 4LO 1st), 1st gear will pop in and out repeatedly.

No clue. Was working fine one day and the next day it was doing the N drop thing. Topped off the fluid and stayed the same.

This trip started out featuring 3 vehicles; 17 DCB TRD OR Taco, 97 Limited 4Runner and a 01 Disco II. The Disco dropped out before the trip, so we started off by heading out to Black Canyon National, then off to Black Bear Pass and knocked out the Alpine Loop.

It was at this point we lost my 97 4Runner. It for some reason stalled out and wouldn't restart. We tow strapped it up to the visiting center, and the Park Ranger allowed us to park it there for a few days. The next morning we left the 4Runner behind and started towards Black Bear Pass in the stock Taco.

Time to start heading towards the switchbacks. We did this trail in my 4Runner last year, and being lifted/locked made us spoiled. The trail is much more difficult being stock and having a longer wheel base.

We hit the point of no return with the Taco. Right before this point a guy in a 2 door Wrangler Rubicon asked if we were going to take "that" down the switchbacks. Our response was "Hell yeah"!

A stock Tacoma will make it down Black Bear Pass. We did scrape the skid plates a few times, as well as hit the trailer hitch a few times. We had 2 kind of cringe worthy moments when the stock Goodyear Kevlar tires didn't quite grip the rocks like we wanted to.

We didn't get any pictures of Mineral Creek. The trail was pretty brutal on the stock Tacoma, so we spent almost all our time spotting and rock crawling.

Thanks! Ya it was a major bummer, glad we had a second vehicle that we could still do most of the original trip that we had planned. The Ranger was awesome and let me ditch the Runner for 4 days at the park, which was awesome.

The starter ended up going out on it randomly. Decided that it was the day it didn't want to engage fully on it. No warning or anything, so kind of glad it happened there and not at camp somewhere.

I read a similar story on FB a couple of days ago. Was your rig the one that might have had a flywheel issue? I assume a new starter fixed the problem?

It did stall out. It was bucking, I was climbing the hill to the park at about 4K RPM's and it would drop to 3-3.5K and pop back up to 4K repeatedly. We tried to reproduce it and was pulling hills by the house in 2nd at 4.5K with no issues.
