Can anybody tell me what the heck Tom Hanks is doing in the scene in Apollo 13 where he sticks his arm out and holds his thumb over the moon for a second and then moves it back revealing the moon again?

It's the scene at the beginning right after the big party celebrating Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.

I have always wondered that and I'm watching Apollo 13 for the first time in a long time and the same question popped into my head.

Thanks,

Fink

He is looking at the moon the same way he used to look at the moon while sitting in his lawn chair in an earlier scene.

there is an old fable that a princesss believes the moon is the same size as her thumb nail and proves it by holding up her thumb and covering upthe moon (in her eyes). One of those things you learn when you have kids
