Another interaction with a fellow member of Ultimate oddly enough. BattleWagonActual and I are out of the Marines. Crossing my fingers but I will hopefully be retiring here in a few years with 20 years under my belt. I've recently graduated college with a degree in Economics from Hillsdale College and found a great place to work locally.

What spurred the replacement of my beloved 3rd gen was the addition to the family. #3 is on the way as a late Christmas gift and the 3rd gen, while capable, can't be driven by the wife and I finally found a replacement suitable for such ventures.

It's an 06 limited v8 4runner. Has about 156k on the clock and was really well taken care of. Immediately upon possession I sealed the outside of the frame with Chassis Saver (Magnet Paint) and cleaned up the body with touch up paint and buffed the headlights. She really is a beauty and there are some plans in store.

Head Unit - it came with the amplified system and sub but the head unit was the basic with almost no connectivity. There will be an android hu going in there with a backup camera

Suspension - probably going with Sonoran Steel for this one. I like the idea of the progressive springs and the OME rear. The truck came with the XREAS system and its shot.

Front and rear armor - from an undisclosed source. I've got a deal going but I will be doing most of the heavy lifting for it. Ive got deer and stupid people in the area.

Exhaust - Doug Thorely shorties with some high flow cats and a Walker rear in stainless will replace the nearly shot exhaust system. Hopefully it won't throw any nasty codes at me but it shouldn't.

A little bit of LED lighting will be in the build and I will be upgrading the headlights to a full projector setup from morimoto. I did this to the 3rd gen and I really got spoiled. The light output was outstanding and even the projector setup from toyota pales in comparison.

Fog lights will be upgraded to an amber driving solution again from morimoto. I've taken an evening management position and I do a lot of night driving getting home.

I also just finished most of my firepit and deck design as a side note. I can't wait to finish everything in the spring and have some solid relaxation back there. We found a nice home to buy and have been here while I finished school. Grad school is in the works and hopefully by the time I retire from the military I am well on the way to finishing another retirement. Hope all is well with you guys and I can't wait to get some new posts in with the 4th gen. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/5eb97e89da73166effa3faf02c066fa8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/8124bff1c331b5a6be8292b3432f46f2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/76b52ac2698050331b2236fe0eb24a69.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/c975d469cd02624ca811e363231130cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/93053e8eca79c765f2c395139e9510d2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/b4bc5fa66a4665b095d034f306b1f3a3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/8fb09f9b8119b828506a3c4327d66fba.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/5b04d73e3873b086533392a515204896.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/03d25130f36b6c19d41933d3e79320e6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/88e9786bccd6f3fd84911cc9106b1396.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/02ee9ec3827902ed542f90d49140f6f8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/945d28a38f0c483b997b96d7b65c4eef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/31fdce1fbbbd804ba86c5b925f9bc6bc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/3b36bb14dd181268f0ebee3161306c2b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/7efe55b521bd95d23a1b5c65c5706776.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/8dc0289f78d5774b91ecadf333afb2ce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/22276c9c6596046d532bff68bcb5d64b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191012/8a8d30424c7ccdf1697708af90479409.jpg

Congratulations all around John. I've been following your happenings on FB but until you got the 4th gen I didn't know you guys were expecting. The 4th gen is a great option for the family combined with your Highlander. I outgrew my 3rd gen in several ways but the extra space is so nice.

I'm looking forward to your HU choice. I run the factory setup and it's not bad. I don't need much from a system and what I've got is enough to keep me from dropping some money. I used to have a list of like 8 potential replacements but in the end I felt I wouldn't be much further ahead with the exception of a camera. I don't do Car Play or new fangled stuff and I like a knob for volume.

Thanks!

I just want the ease of not needing to run GPS off my phone, a backup camera, and just getting in and having my phone connect. I had to rent a car for a week and it had all of those features so I decided to build it into this one.

So I'm looking at colors. Need a little bit of opinion on this one. Looking for color pop but also not trying to be obnoxious. The first pic of color shades are all of the colors but the second are what I think are solid possibilities.

These are going to be accents. So bumpers, mirrors, lip of the hood, and maybe fenders. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191025/4ee6d8c75bc267e8fe823fd1736ca611.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191025/39aa5a1193890b23c504696f9a8467ab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191025/1ba25b385df4dd623177a1e341ded134.jpg

Would this be painted on?

IMO I'd leave it as is.

Hey John,

Chiming in really late: congrats on #3, graduating, nice deck, and almost retiring from the Marines! Thanks for your service :)

I'm with Mike: I'd leave the new 4th gen as is with no accents. Very sharp as it currently looks. Good call on taking care of the rust. I need to do that on my rear axle which was a swapped axle.

IMO I'd leave it as is.It would be a spray job but I'm thinking you guys are right on the color. I wonder if I could pull the same stunt as I did with the 98 and spray the stock color. I just want to add some durability to the high impact areas. It's a project on the shelf in my mind. I'll get the lift and tires on her and see how everything looks.

It's how I was able to get my degree finished. I tried attending on active duty but between deployments and training schedules I wasn't making enough progress to ever get it done. Hoping to start grad school this year and get over that hurdle as well. If I get that all out of the way by the time I am 40 I'll be pretty happy about that.

My 3rd gen and my 4th gen had/have factory painted bumpers, the 4th gens being plastic. I kid you not the 4th gen bumpers get beat without even trying. I park in my driveway and in a small park-n-ride and somehow I get a lot of scuffs and little dings. I'm pretty sure it's not my kids but I'm also sure I'm not hitting stuff while I'm driving. I've been able to buff a few marks out but some are there to stay. I don't want to cover or replace the bumpers but I see where you're going with your thinking.

I had been pretty set on Coastal or possibly having a good buddy design one but man the open top kit from nwti is sharp!

And at 650 for the kit and then another 400 or so for the rear, which is pretty sharp too, I have idiot protection front and rear. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191102/209dac7ea302fa38a4ed2f812914c606.jpg

I'm really torn on the suspension which is pretty much shot. From what I've read it happens to the v8 runners in particular and I put the blame on the extra engine weight. Anyway Dobinsons seems to be pretty highly recommended but there's also Sonoran Steel. I respect the aussies for their suspensions but I'm partial to Steve as well. He's got a completely progressive spring setup paired with Bilstein 5100s. I've enjoyed the valving and ride on my 3rd gen and I'm tempted to go with Steve on this setup even though it obviously isn't the 3rd gen which is what got him started. Any input is appreciated

I like the minimalist look!

I like the minimalist look!Me too but the biggest thing for me is the bracing for the hoops isn't on the edge. They're firmly planted in the bumper. I'm hoping I can cut through and weld them on both sides to make them stiffer

The suspension is ordered. So much research my head is spinning. I ended up going with Bilstein 6112 and 650# springs up front and then the Bilstein 5160 shocks with their springs in the rear. I looked at the weight of nwti's bumpers and decided that it would be best to stick with a heavier setup since it seems that there are a lot of people under springing their suspension with sagging effects. I should be running on the bottom perch or the next to bottom perch for around 2" all around.

You'd have to look at my 4th gen garage post to see what Dobinson parts I ordered but I've been really happy with the kit. I believe there were 5 rear spring options when I ordered mine and I think there are at least two more. The company seems really responsive to the US market and I feel the suspension options available for the 120 platform are so much better than what used to be available for the 3rd gens.

My 3rd gen OME stuff was okay but I wore out springs and didn't have a very heavy setup. The 5100's did me well and at the time were very well priced. My front Dobinson springs are for the V8 and I forget what lift and while they have settled I didn't find that they compressed much at all with my C4Fab bumper and winch. The springs aren't stiff and I've got zero rubbing with a 275 tire.

I liked how bilstein has been collaborating with toyota for the factory suspensions and ultimately I thought that was the best route I could go. The offerings haven't been out there for a long time and there was a pretty strong sentiment that the 600 springs were too lightweight for the v8. Since I found a vendor that is willing to pair them with 650 springs I thought that would improve things quite a bit. Since I won't be using a lot of preload on the springs I expect that the ride will be forgiving when I get the bumper on there.

Well I've got some parts to the house and figured out how I'm going to do the suspension in the cold. I found a garage, a small army of heaters, and my neighbor will give me a hand lol.

So at the same time the suspension is going on the internal frame coating will be completed as well as the rubberized undercoating and the fluid film.

Then an alignment.....and then we go for new tires.
