I have seen this and that for aux cells. I could buy a cell but I have one that I think I can mod to work. I have my 1st gen roll bar which will be in soon then the spare tires can live inside (not stoked but it will work). I have a RCI 10,12,13 gallon ( I forget). It does not have a fuel sender hole, I can cut and add. I have an idea of how to mount it. MY question is do I use it as a gravity feed or will I need a sending unit. Also I can get a 45 degree filler neck and pipe it up but need a y filler that I can attach inline to my existing line in. I saw something over at Sleeoffroad http://sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_fuel.htm and I have seen it installed but not sure how I should go about mine or if I should do it at all.http://www.yankeetoys.org/mangler/auxtank.htm

BUMP! Ok so no one here has an aux tank, seeing as how we only get on the high side of 250 miles, some additional range is needed.

Heres what IM thinking. I dont know where to aquire the y filler so I could mount the tank I have and use the RCI 45 degree filler neck run some hose and put a marine type flat tank fill on the top of my rear bumper, then run a vent line off the tank inline with the stock one. Instead of using a sending unit I will use a small fuel pump to transfer the fuel from one tank to the other. I will time the flow rate prior to install and see if I can t find a timer switch like the one the Rear defrost uses on my truck currently so that it can shut the pump down after transfer is complete. I will have to modify the stock tank or just tap the fuel filler hose to insert my aux in.

thats the way ive heard about it being done most. if you could find a gauge for the aux tank, you could actually know how much fuel you have left in it and could either have that AND the timed switch, or just keep an eye on your gauge and flip it off manually when you see the auxiliary is empty or your stock one is full. it would definitely be an advantage to have more fuel on board.

Ok so I might go a different way again. For the filler I was thinking about using the marine flush mounted type and mounting it on the rear bumper, just under the rear door so you have to have the door open to fill it.

Currently the picture in my head has an issue with the 1 1/2" size on the filer marine filler neck and 1 3/4 on the fuel cell filler neck. I more than likely can use a reducer, but my next thought is the filler neck on the cell, should I use 45 deg. and attach a filler hose or a 0 deg. and use a 90 deg elbow with reducer attached to the marine filler.

As for the cell itself since its free, I will build a small steel cage to fit around it and bolt to the existing hitch frame bolts. Will need to add a skid to it but that will come later. I will cap off the unused plugs run the drivers side plug to tie into the OE filler neck after using a fuel pump and a top cap to tie into the OE vent system.

Am I missing anything?

At one point I thought about adding a aux tank, the way I was planning on wiring it was quite simple. attach a relay to the low fuel light in the main tank, so when it comes on, the aux fuel pump turns on. You can modify the filler tube, by welding a "Y" at the bend, so both tanks will stay pressurized. An option to prevent the aux fuel pump from constantly running after both tanks are low, is to run a sending unit in the aux tank, once it turns on it switches another relay to shut power to the pump.

This make it simple to monitor fuel levels, since it's all on the same guage. You can even put in a circuit, so when the low light turns on the pump runs for a specific amount of time, before shutting down. That way the light isn't constantly turnning on and off.

Man that is an awesome suggestion, The only problem is the "free" $200 fuel cell does not have the sending unit hole cut in it. I could get a measurement from the factory and cut the hole but more money again. I like the idea alot and hell for that matter a circuited board could still be used for the auto on and off then just run a momentary switch to kill it if need be that both tanks are dry. Though you mentioned pressure being kept, how could I keep the pressure if I have a sealed filler cap mounted on the bumper and the breather line tied into the stock system? As far as welding into y would the fuel just start into the other tank if the primary if full? I dont mind having an additional location for the aux fuel.

good call bruce, i was curious how one might do this.

hmm... this is a thread ill bookmark for future mods, once i get my suspension where i want it :)

Since the stock tank is pressurized, you have to have a way to equalize pressure between both tanks. You can run another line from the factory tank to the breather vent line on the fuel cell.

Without a sending unit, you can have a circuit that shuts off the pump after it runs for a specific amount of time and only resets once the fuel light goes out. Then you won't need a sending unit, that or have a switch to manually turn it off.

The project is a no go! I took final measurements today and even though its close to the measurements of the the spare 285 AT it will absolutely hang to low. If it was 28"-35" wide 6-9" tall and 24" long it would be perfect. I knew it was close but looks too close. If I was not off roading it would be ok, but I would crush this thing. I looked at what Long Ranger offered and that might be the way to go just not certain who imports them. They have a 60L Long Range TA37S Auxiliary Fuel Tank. nice setup only for 89-96 4Runners but probably could be modded. I only fear it will cost a fortune.
