Picked up these 285/75R16 Pro Comp Xterrains off craiglist for $300.00. They were in excellent shape with roughly 90% tread remaining. I washed the rig tonight and ventured over to old town Gilbert and found some cool spots to take some photos.

Do they rub anywhere? Did you have to shave the upper A-arms?

Fortunately there have been no rubbing issues. As you can see, I removed a few cosmetic pieces (front plastic valance, fender flare pieces, and rear mud guards) just for grins. But otherwise, no rubbing on the pinch weld or upper a-arms at all.

Sweet looking rig and good deal on the meats! I'll bet if you would've left the valance and mud guards on, you'd get some rubbing. Hard to tell how much though.

Stylin!

I like the rear tow hooks. Did the same thing and have used them a few times also.

Looks like a Runner should!

I agree. Here's a few more shots of them...

Those look great!
I'm so jealous of you guys that have ZERO rust on your undercarriage!

Is the color of those hooks significant or just because?

I think we also see an unhappy CV boot in one of those pics. Uh Oh.

Looks nice! Sometimes I think I may want a third gen. They look very nice built up.

Those would look good with Andy's neon blue skids. :D Also, they match his broom.

It was down to either the Ace Hardware STOP RUST spray paint in Safety Green or the Dark Yellow. I think the green turned out pretty good, but yes, it coincidentally matches the bristles on my push broom. Maybe I should strap the push broom to the roof rack and people will think it was a factory option :hillbill:

And yes, my passenger side inner CV boot is leaking bad. Rubber is perfect - no rips or tears, but it's spewing out the end.

I think you made the right choice, green over the yellow. Plus it matches the green in the AZ license plate. I like the factory option broom idea.

Scott, great deal on the tires. 4Runner looks good too.

I had planned on getting a new set of 265/75s this summer, but man, those 285/75s sure do look tempting. :D

Thanks Rock Slide! Yeah, my 265/75R16s looked just fine on my stock 4Runner. But once I lifted it, they appeared to be too small :). I definitely think that the 285s (at the bare minimum) are a MUST when you lift the 3rd gen 4Runner. I'm very happy with the results.

I agree. 285s look much better than 265/75s on a lifted 4Runner.

However, I commute 40 miles round trip from hm to wk and back Mon - Fri...and it's all freeway driving too. With that being said, I don't know if I can justify to myself that 285s would be a better choice over 265/75s as far as mpgs, acceleration/power and overall vehicle wear and tear is concerned. Granted, IMO a 4Runner "looks" better w/ 285s and probably even performs better w/ them, but as much freeway driving as I do and as limited four wheeling as I "get" to do, I'm having a hard time convincing myself I need 285s over 265/75s. I didn't buy a 4Runner for their great mpgs, but I would like to still get decent mpgs after a tire upgrade. Plus, I like the accel my 4Runner currently has. How has it affected your accel. Very noticeable or just some?

I plan on getting a new set of tires in a couple months (trying to completely wear out my stock tires first), so I've got time to think about it...I just can't seem to come up with a good choice. :(

Sorry, didn't mean for that statement to sound so matter-of-fact. There is definitely something to be said for the mpg loss and power loss, as well as, additional wear & tear on the drivetrain. My point was purely from the perspective of aesthetics.

You don't have to apologize...I didn't take it that way at all. :)

I agree, 285s look head over heels better than 265s on a lifted 3rd Gen, I just wanted you to see the dilima I'm having deciding on tires. It sucks.

I might just try a set of 265/75s and run those a while and see how I like them. I can always upgrade later to some 285s. :D If I didn't drive an est 22K miles a year, I'd probably get a set of 285s right now.

Cool

I totally hear you on that. It is a dilemma. I'm sure I'm going to burn through the tread on these Xterrains pretty quickly with all of the street and highway driving I do. I'll probably get an "I told you so!" from my wife when we have to replace these sooner that I would have if I'd just stuck with my 265s.
