Lodging Information
For those of you who wish to stay indoors, here is a link to a list of hotels, lodges, etc from the June Lake Chamber of Commerce. We will leave those who take this route to choose their own accommodations.

What to Expect
The Oh Ridge campground has communal flush bathrooms and running water. Tap water can be had at faucets around camp and it actually tastes pretty good. Please don't do dishes or clean fish at the faucet, bring a bucket or a water container and fill it up and bring it back to the campsite. Showers are available at the general store for a small fee.

Weather in the Sierras can be unpredictable; it's the nature of the high desert mountains. It can be 80 degrees one minute and showering the next minute. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR THUNDER SHOWERS. It probably won't rain, but it would suck to be caught without rain clothes. Day time temperatures will be in the 80s, night time temperatures will be in the 50s.

During the day it can get windy, especially in at the camp site and on Lake Crawley. While you don't need to stake down your tent, you do need to put heavy items at the corners so it doesn't blow away. Tents have been known to fly across the campground when the owners were gone.

Altitudes will range from 6500 feet up to 10,000 feet. At these altitudes there is very little atmosphere to protect you from the sun, so you will most likely get sunburned. Always wear a hat and sunscreen. Long sleeve shirts are nice too, but can get hot.

Mosquitoes can be a problem in some areas, be sure to bring insect repellent. DEET is the best, you can decide on what percentage you want to use. Don't forget about your dog too, they can get eaten alive out there. Check with your vet about insect repellent for pets.

Bears are occasionally seen and while not as bad as Yosemite, can destroy your truck or campsite getting to food. Bear boxes are provided at the campsite so please use them. That includes make up, toothpaste, candy wrappers, soda cans, etc. Usually bears can be scared away by banging pots and pans together.

The destinations are spread out up and down 395. Normally you can expect to drive 1 hour north or south of June Lake to get to the farthest lakes. Be prepared to spend money on gas as it is very expensive up there. Generally, gas is cheapest in the town of Bishop, so fill up there if you can. The next cheapest is in the town of Mammoth.

The town of Mammoth (20-25 minutes south of June Lake) is a fairly large ski town so you can have all the creature comforts such as a grocery store and restaurants.

Where to Rent Float Tubes and Fly Fishing Gear: http://www.thetroutfly.com/rentalsdemos.html

Fishing licenses: Information on fishing licenses can be found here: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fish...shdescrip.html You will need to get a 1 day, 2 day or an annual freshwater license. Here is a pdf of the California Freshwater fishing regulations. You are responsible for knowing the rules: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/2006/06freshfishregbook.pdf

Notes on Fishing:
The type of fishing in the Sierras is Trout fishing, mostly Rainbow Trout but sometimes Brook Trout and Brown Trout. Sizes typically range from a little less than 1 pound to a little more than 1 pound, however, the occasional Alpers trout can weigh near 10 pounds.

Spinning Rod Setup: I use an ultralight setup which means 2 pound line with either a lurer or a sliding bubble filled with water and a single hook with powerbait (treble hooks work better but are a pain to remove from the fish). Typically, lurers around 1 inch long that are gold or silver work well. Personally I like Phoebes, Super Dupers, and Kastmasters, but others work well too.

The picture below shows my setup. For the purposes of this photo, the leader is not actually 3 feet long.
http://www.robinhood4x4.com/misc/spinning%20rod.JPG

Fly Fishing Setup: Typically, 5-6 weight rods work well, but if you’re into ultralight 2-3 weight is fun. For lake fishing I usually float tube and use a 6 weight sinking tip line with a 5x leader. Size 14 Olive Wooly Buggers are my go to fly, followed by other colors of Wooly Buggers or Matukas and various small scuds. Depending on conditions I might switch to a full sinking line. Of course you do not have to fly fish when you float tube, lots of people use normal fishing gear when float tubing…Float tubing is a lot of fun. If you’d like to try fly fishing and/or float tubing you can rent all the equipment from The Trout Fly in mammoth http://www.thetroutfly.com/rentalsdemos.html, prices are reasonable. I can be available for a basic fly fishing lesson, but please let me know before you rent equipment, we’ll need to figure out the schedule.

Offroad / Hike

Location: Laurel Canyon
Elevation:
7,289 feet at Sherwin Creek Road and the road to Laurel Lakes;
10,058 at the highest point of the road above Upper Laurel Lake.

Trail Distance: 4 miles round trip
Difficulty: 4x4 required, easy. Great for 1st time offroaders.
Map:
Description:

The trail to Laurel Lakes offers beautiful views of Mammoth as you climb out of the valley and away from Sherwin Creek Road (4s08). The trail starts on (4s86), and begins climbing a set of steep switchbacks with imbedded and loose rock. Vehicles with low ground clearance may scrape. At the top of the switchbacks you have a wonderful view of Mammoth Lakes, and the Sierra Nevada mountains. You continue south and enter the Inyo National Forest. At 1.7 miles you cross a cattle guard and begin following Laurel Creek. At 2.0 miles you can drive down a short trail to the west, and make camp in one of the most beautiful camp sites i have stayed in. The camp sits under a large Aspen grove, with Laurel Creek flowing in the background. Truly Breathtaking
After the Campsite, the trail climbs a narrow shelf road to the Laurel Lakes. It is about 3 miles to the lakes from the campsite. The lakes offer native trout fishing (not a stocked lake), and clear emerald colored water. The trail ends at the lakes 10,000 ft elevation. When driving down the trail you are afforded amazing views of this narrow, glacier carved canyon.

The east Craters Loop begins here, heading south. The road splits after 200 yards. This marks the beginning and end of the entire loop. Go left, following the directional signs.

Freshwater Kayaking
There are lots of freshwater lakes that offer delightful locations to paddle kayaks and canoes. You can paddle your boat to a secluded beach and enjoy a picnic in the sand.

Crowley Lake is a large freshwater lake close to Mammoth Lakes with spectacular vistas of the surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks. The U.S. Olympic Flat Water Kayak Team might train on the waters of Crowley Lake in preparation for the year 2004 Olympics in Athens. We offer lakefront lessons and quality kayak rentals at the Crowley Lake Marina from May through the middle of October. On the water kayak rentals make it convenient and easy to paddle a scenic gem overlooked by many paddlers. Paddle a kayak along the twenty mile shoreline and discover hidden coves and sandy beaches for yourself.

Grant Lake, a reservoir upstream from Mono Lake, has lots of sandy beaches and great vistas of Mt. Wood. Trees line the shoreline and the water is refreshing on a hot day. Autumn colors are especially vibrant on the lakeshore and hills that surround the lake. Grant Lake is part of the watershed that fills Mono Lake so we are happy to see the lake quite full these days.

Ok was talking to a buddy today about this trip. He is a pretty avid outdoor activity type of guy. He had done a lot of hiking, rock climbing, fishing in the area and he told me some cool things and even drew me some maps.

He told me about some hot springs to go check out. That the ones in Bishop i guess are usually pretty crowded. and these are usually pretty good to go. Even if people are camping there its usually give em there 20-30 min and they will rotate out. The second one on the map i guess is even bigger, and there is one or two more close by.

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n74/reggiemiller00/Image40.jpg

Also for the photography inclined you have to check out the Rowell Gallery.

And for those that live by the gut (that's me) to check out the Schatts bakery, they have it all and the cheese bread is worth the trip alone.

For those who like to hang off rock surfaces by the little pinkie, he told me about some of the better spots to check out.

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n74/reggiemiller00/Image41.jpg

Basically if you go into East-side mountain sports they will hook you up with directions guide books ect for these spots. the numbers are his ranking.

Said all of them are just chalk no rope needed, said it in a different way which eludes me right now.

Basically had lots of good ideas and i will definitely try to get by to get some more info. He aslo said he had a killer fishing spot or two and a few places to wheel an hike up at altitude.

I would really love to go on this trip...problem is Justin just started a new job with the City of LA and he hasn't accrued any vacation time. I'll have to talk to him, maybe I can attend with one of my friends.

Reggie, all of the places you're buddy listed are super cool. I've been to Schatt's like a million times (they have one in Mammoth, by the way); judging by the map he drew, I've been to those hot springs (be very careful bringing dogs, some of them have unknownly jumped into scalding water and died). That gallery is definately worth stopping at. There are some amazing pictures there.

In addition, just south of Bishop in Lone Pine are the Alabama Hills. There are some dirt trails you can drive on that take you to some movie locations. The movie Tremors was filmed there! Very cool.

Robinhood4x4
06-19-2007, 07:02 AM
The mammoth hot springs are close to laurel lakes. Remember where we were headed south on 395 and then turned off to the right to get to the trail head? Well, turn off to the left instead on Hot Creek Hatchery Rd. Follow the dirt road for a while and there will be a bunch of dirt parking lots. The up stream parking lots are for fly fishing but the downstream ones will lead to the hot springs. By the way, that is a world famous fly fishing stream.

I told you guys to go to schat's last time :). Also in bishop is a pretty big beef jerky place. It's toward the end of town and on the right if you're headed north. Be sure to hit all the sporting goods stores in Mammoth too. Lots of times at the end of the season they'll put everything on sale. I've gotten a lot of killer deals on things.

make no mistake: there will be wheeling activities. however, this trip was designed from the get go to make it a multi-sport, multi-activity family get together. meaning, there are a lot of activities you are free to choose to do, depending on your preference. it was a huge success last year for that very reason and i believe this trip will continually be one of the best attended going forward.

Also, if you don't bring your truck and want to offroad, just ride along with someone else! people seem to be pretty cool about letting others drive their rides. i drove paddlenbike's truck last year for a short period of time.

Bob, did they teach you how to fish with your "numshucks"?

there's only one numchuck master and i doubt he'll teach me  but i did learn and have some time to practice my casting which is still pretty weak. but practice makes perfect

bob, count me and my friends in as they're all joining in on the fun for the fishing.

yeah, this trip is shaping up to be more of a fishing trip! I'll have to split up the people into groups so as to not crowd out the lakes.

Oh sure, all you guys go fishing this year but leave me and bob to go fishing by ourselves last year. :spank:

haha, that was fun last year, steve. you are responsible for my new obsession!

My dad and I were planning on doing some fishing. I tried fly fishing once- I wasn't very good at it, but it was still a lot of fun.

Count us in on your fishing trip!

Absolutely no-one owes me anything :shake:. I really doubt I can make this trip (again :(). I won't be back from my trip to Australia until the 16th and the following week I am in Big Bear for the weekend. The 18-21 is also the Australian Digifest in the lower Sierra's which I'd like to go to but I doubt I'll have the energy after Oz trip.

I would love to go with you guys and bring the whole family, but I suspect it's not going to happen.

I'll be plotting a gps trail for those that want to take their vehicles out for a day stroll. otherwise, we'll keep it open for the lakes fishing and hiking and maybe mountain biking for those that want to take it up with the mountains.

I'm also open to setup a run for laurel lakes. same trail as last year if ya guys remember.

Lance, that sounds good. I was looking at my map and may take one day and go exploring different hot springs. I was amazed at how many are out there on my Tom Harrison Map. I can wait and play that by ear and see what everyone else is up too. I really liked that trip up to Laurel Lakes, it made a good last day trip.

What would be the best night for the potluck? Any night works for me. :D

Pot luck will be saturday evening. I'll pre-plan various trails and routes for everyone to explore and play it by ear the day of. With a lot of variety out there, I know we'll all have fun. Whatever we do, we should all return around 5ish to get ready for the pot luck.

I've picked up a canopy from wallymart ($25 for a 12x9 rectangle) so we'll use that to store the grub. If you have a spare please bring one :)

Post up what you're gonna bring! Btw lets not bring TOOO much food this time ok? I think we could have fed twice our group size from last year with all of the leftovers. If possible, make sure whatever you bring is kids friendly as we'll have a few with us!

I'm gonna bring some ravioli/tortolini (sp?) with tomato meat sauce of some kind (costco style) :)

id have to say that guiness is not one of my favorites. though a black and tan is alright.

man, i cannot wait for this trip. we are all set up for fly fishing now w/ our own gear. sierra trading post is the most righteous place to buy gear. we got pretty good float tubes for $50 each, i got breathable waders for $50, two pair of wading boots for $60, and fly fishing combo rod/reels (2) for $330.

oh, we are gonna bring churros this year. PROMISE, reggie! but it will have to be a friday nite thing b/c the dry ice won't last til saturday.

Does anyone have any plans to do some of the trails?

I was looking thru the book and there are a few i would be interested in as they have some cool stuff to see, old mines and what not.

Kavanaugh Ridge
Laurel lakes
Coyote flat
Silver/Wyman Canyons

Are a few i was looking at. Most would take a good part of the day to run, 3-4 hrs plus look around time and travel to time.
Not much of a fisherman so if anyone else likes to get their fish at the market let me know if you wanna go get lost or something.

I'd like to save laurel lakes for sunday as that's what we did and it worked out well for a 1/2 day thing.

i'll have trail options tomorrow as i'm gonna work on em in a bit. will try to make the trails interactive to some respect by hitting key sites or whatever that's interesting instead of it just being a drive thru dull trails.

I'll be heading up thursday night now. Gonna stay up in Mammoth for the night and then be at the campsite early afternoon. I've picked up some hot pink streamers (home depot) so I'll try my best to mark trees/poles/signs so everyone can find the site easily.

I'll also mark each site w/ the pink streamer so it's easy for all of us to locate each other.

I have two books on trails in the area so I'll make sure to bring both of them. One of them has gps coordinates so I'll let ya guys use it to head out and get lost :)

hey guys,

Me, the misses, and my friend David are heading up on Thurs nite and spending the night in exciting Olancha. We're arriving there around midnite and will drive the rest of the way to June the next morning so we can get in some fishing time and other stuff on Friday

And speaking of fishing, here's some good info and updates on the fishing in June and neighboring Mammoth lakes:

JUNE LAKE LOOP
June Lake has been heavily planted recently, so you put and take guys should have some fun with the stockers. I have had good reports from streamer fisherman trolling from a tube along the banks here this week.

Fishing has been fair to good across the loop. The best lake fishing in the area is at Silver Lake with any black streamer or leech pattern. Rush Creek is fair with adams, elk hair caddis and cdc caddis emergers. The action picked up after last week’s full moon. June and Silver are fishing best. Try Silver near the inlet and along the drop off for some mid-sized browns or Alpers’. Try tubing with streamers at the inlet of Grant. Olive or brown Matukas, purple or olive Wooly Buggers or Mohair Leech will do the trick at any of the four lakes. Trollers have had success with Tasmanian Devils or Needlefish.

Good news for shore casters: "Just got back from fishing the loop last week. Stayed on gull most of the time as fishing there was great for me. Fished the shore on the west end between the swinging rope area and the large rocky ledge. Caught my limit from this area using yellow & rainbow PB (Powerbait) on 3 foot leader just about everyday. Good luck."

Note: Steve's wife Miki used PB last year and she was catching fish one after another. Little guys, but she was catching fish!

...and at neighboring Mammoth:

MAMMOTH AREA
A very good bite at Crowley. A stock of broods with fish in the six to 12-pound range went in this week. Best action in McGee Bay for fly anglers using midge or perch fry patterns. The bigger fish are in five to 10 feet along the Old Stream Channel.

At Convict Lake the action is good at the jetty for trollers using Thomas Buoyants and Kastmasters. Top fish of the week was a 6-6 by Ryab Wischnack, Valencia, on a green Trout Teaser. Susan Brown, Ojai, caught a 5-8 trout. Catherine Battin, West Lake, caught a 5-2 trout off the north shore. Tanner and Ray Barnes, Izquierdo, landed a five-pound trout on yellow Power Bait.

Hot Creek is fair to good, however the bite has been challenging with extremely low flows and high weeds. Hoppers and terrestrials have been best, but continued good caddis and midge hatches. The Upper Owens bite is good for nymphers with a lot of browns in the mix.

In the Mammoth Lakes, there were 625 pounds of Alpers’ trout planted. The lakes were also planted with browns. Most of those fish are holding deep. Fly fishing is the best bet with Matukas, Hornburgs, Pheasant Tails or Hare’s ears.

Be legal! Here's info on fishing licenses:

One Day Sport Fishing- $12.10
2-Day Sport Fishing - $18.65
Resident Sport Fishing - $37.30

FISHING ITINERARY
According to the trip reports above, Silver and June are the best ones to fish. Thus, I'd like to hit those two on Friday and Saturday. We can choose to caravan or go our own ways. It's up to you! I'm getting in touch with Steve (Robinhood) to get his recommendations as well as he is familiar with these lakes up here.

Yep, I have to get it ready for him (he'll be sporting a bugs bunny rod and reel) and I need to get my rod and reel put together. It's been so long, I am going to have to look for a writeup on how to get the line on the reel, etc... I think I will wait and buy my tackle once I am up there, mainly because I don't know if I will have time to get it here.

if spin casting, we can tie an arbor knot to secure and then we can just reel on the line. simpler than a fly rod/line, that's for sure!

Leaving early Friday morning ( around 9am) should be in Camp around 1 or 2 pm.

Decided to leave Monday morning and camp Monday night in Yosemite. Going to stay @ upper pines. Looks like there is a few interesting things to do Monday at the park, Ranger stroll- Bears, Starry skies ect. Never been and so why not.

Any planned runs besides Sunday Laural Canyon?
If not does anyone want to go to Bodie Saturday? I didn't get to go on the back way last year? Or is that something planned?
