View Full Version : Collision contagion!

First Lance, now me...though i didn't have nearly the damage that Lance did!:)

As much as I would have liked to put a good off roading story to this, this was a dumb, stupid accident on my part. I just clipped a H3 on the freeway on the way back from work. I just simply was not paying attention and messing with my sun visor at the time to adjust it properly.

As you can see, it was a glancing blow. The good thing was that no one was hurt, no spin out, etc. The H3 had a nice family with a small child. Child was fine. As we pulled off the side of the freeway to exchange info, the CHP lady pulled behind us not a few minutes after the collision. She escorted us onto the surface streets where we got to exchange more information, but through an official police report.

Like i said, the family was a nice family and everything was very low key and cordial. The cop even said that the family agreed that they were all ok.

Another good thing was that the T17 took most of the damage and contained it to the bumper and to the bumper brackets. if i had my stock bumper, that thing would've folded like the French army and probably wouldve sustained more internal damage (i.e. radiator, battery pushed in, etc). after several tries to bend the wing away from the front driver's side tire, i just took off the bumper and drove home w/o it (stored it in back)

i think the bumper is toast as well as the bumper brackers, but i will give it the good country try and try to bash it back into shape. i dont think it'll happen, but anything is possible with steel. the lights are toast, some internal brakcets are toast, but over all, this should not be a difficult repair. the hood sustained a little damage, so who knows what magic they can pull off at the body shop to bend it back. Oh yeah, the satoshi mod survived :) at least i think so...maybe one of the rear clips broke, but thats about it.

oh yeah, you morbid bastids, here are the pics

Ah man Bob, sorry to see/hear that! Perhaps I should just keep my 4Runner in the garage for a while.

Had you center-punched the H3's rear tire carrier there would be considerably more damage to her truck.

Good luck in getting her back on the road Bob.

ooo, crappy to see to such a well thought out vehicle. but at least youll be known not as "H3 recovery team", but as H3 rear ender-er.

ken,

yeah, that tire hanging off the back of the hummer wouldve mangled more than just the hatch.

and damn dude, i have not heard from the adjuster today. i better hear from him/her tomorrow by noon!

haha, thanks for the compliment---and the jab :hillbill: well like i said, its probably not going to be an expensive repair. lots of parts swapping i think. hopefully the adjuster is experienced enough to make a good evaluation

i am definitely going to see what the cost is for a 99 scooped hood vs a 98 hood. and i'm gonna want to get the 99 headlights as well. of course, i'll pay the difference if it is not significant.

looks like the bumper can be pounded back out, I have a set of side wings. Time to do the turnsignal mod........ Brackets are repairable

Bob98SR5
05-17-2007, 11:19 PM
bruce,

yeah, that is my goal. if those wings are for sale, i'll buy em from you. turn signal mod: oh yeah, right! i actually bought that relay many moons ago, but other stuff came up before that.

luckily, i kept my old stock bumper. that will go on temporarily until i can get the rest pounded back into shape. i'll need some help/tips from you re best way to accomplish this if you dont mind.

Wow Bob, not sure how I missed this thread, but luckily everyone was fine and it doesn't look too bad to fix. I definately want to see a scooped hood on that thing when it's all done (accident is certainly the time to get that changed out if insurance is paying for it...difference will be minimal). I hope that collision virus stays contained to the west coast though!

It's the curse of the 4Runners! My friend rolled his last August. I totalled mine in December. I was freaking stuck driving a rental Focus for a couple of weeks. Still have a bitter after-taste. Bleck.

talked w/ the shop yesterday after getting the report from the adjuster. made sure i got my 99 parts in there. i got the 99 lights, corner lamps and 99 hood w/ hood scoop parts. i am just paying a little over $165 to get the 99 hood scoop. anyways, they say it should take 3-4 weeks but thats not acceptable to me so i am going to go to the shop, start counting vehicles to make sure mine is not done later than the ones i see in the lot

Wow...3-4 weeks to fix?...thats a pretty long time considering the damages seen in the pics...Did the frame get bent or something, that shouldn't take no longer than a week at most. Which body shop did you go to Bob?

Seanz0rz
05-26-2007, 08:52 PM
saw a green 3rd gen with massive right side damage today on the freeway. it was on the 5 or 55 or something like that. looks like it either changed lanes into a chevy or the chevy hit the side of it. it was pretty banged up, looked like someone got hurt, saw someone on a strecher.

poor 4runners! i lost a bolt on the freeway for my grill guard, whole thing fell down away from the grill. put in a spare bolt till i got back, now its sitting in my back yard where it will remain till someone takes it off my hands. time for an arb!

Bob98SR5
05-26-2007, 11:16 PM
ice,

yeah, 3-4 weeks sounds way too long. so went to the shop, they were closed. but the gate was open so i parked inside the lot. well you konw what i saw? my freakin' bumper was sitting next to the dumpster. Farg, i was soooo damn pissed off when i saw that. so i called the shop, but all i got was an answering machine so i left off my pissed off message. turned around home to get my tools and i took it apart and hauled it back home. i have no idea how i am gonna pound this back into shape, esp the left side. one mount is toast, but i think i could grind out the shackle hanger wing and weld it back into another bracket.

the shop's name is expo auto body on baldwin and lower azusa...right by the home depot. its my friend's shop. i am gonna give him a big piece of my mind on tuesday.

bob

Bob98SR5
05-30-2007, 10:50 PM
well, ave him a piece of my mind. never heard my friend so apologetic. anyways, looks like 2-3 weeks. i told him 4 weeks was bull#### and not acceptable, esp for a friend who didnt have to go to his shop

henry,

hey, news flash: your V is missing from your name ;) j/k. you can be whoever you want on this forum...and not be banned for it :D

yeah, it was not a good day, but i know it couldve been much worse...as in me hurting myself or hurting others more seriously. its just a car, as they say. but yeah, i dont like to be given the b.s. line either when it comes to the long estimates for repairs

i am going to drop in and check it out on saturday to see what progrss if any has been made. i'll expect the worst and hope for the best!

ok truck is back. looks like they did a great job so far. i did not give it the 110% inspection, but from all quick looks right now, they did a great job. ill post pics tomorrow.

looks great w/ the hood scoop!

ok, nothing to get all exited about, but here are the pics. good thing: no frame damage. nothing to straighten out. they installed a new 98 grill, but i put ol' satoshi back on :) the truck looks so different w/out the TJM. looks...ummm...stock! :D i definitely think the hood scoop gives it a more muscular look, but in the end game, its just deco-ray-shun, as they say in the hood.

However, i am looking at 96 4runner's data with great interest re cutting out the hood scoop barrier thing. doesnt matter as much to me b/c i dont have an SC, but interesting info about the cooling effect at idle.

pounding that tjm will be an effort. its really twisted. i think i'll start a suggestion thread on what would be the best way to rebend it back.
