I just took my 4Runner into the dealership (just bought this rig, and the water pump was already leaking, so they're going to fix it), and they said that there was a recall on the front ball joint. Just thought you guys should know. This might apply to 2001's, too.

Apparently, Tundra's and Sequoia's have a similar recall.

Yeah, it's a good idea to check with your dealer to see if it's been done or not.

Mine was done before I bought it though.

Good to know thanks! Gonna take her to the delership and have them check the VIN for any recalls.

for those who have done the LOWER ball joint recall: have you had alignment issues since?
each time(3) ive had the tires rotated, i have to have it re-aligned. always pulls to the left.
the dealer has handled it each time but its getting ridiculous...

I noticed a slight pull before they did the recall, and now it's pulling a little more to the right. I'm going to take it in this week to have them re-align it.

I've had zero alignment issues since the recall install

toyota came and got it within 15 mins of me callng them the next morning. They went ahead and replaced everything from the frame out on that side and both b/js on the pass. side just in case. replaced my already banged up bumper, fender, and fixed the door. Ended up being 1000 even on mechanical and 1800 on body. Didnt have to pay a cent.

I know this is an old thread but I recently noticed that the drivers side lower ball joint is oozing some lube. So I took it into the local Toy service shop and they said that it is not a recalled part under my VIN. So is this not all 01 and 02 like this link suggests????

Lee, any more details on how you talked them into doing it? This is not a part I have ever worked with so if they will not do it then I guess I will be learning how to do it myself.

honestly i dont remember much since it was so long ago, but i went in and said i got a bulletin by mail, even though i didnt. then i just sort of acted paranoid about it, and they just fixed it without even thinking about it.

but it also helped that i didnt have that many mods on it. im sure with your truck they were happy to see that the vin isnt covered.

Yeah I thought about that to. They probably looked at it and said if they are bad it is your driving that did it. They would probably be correct. LOL

Sounds like there is a small tool like a pulley puller sort of deal that presses them out. I will probably do it when I decide which front set up to try next now that these saws are nearly dead.

Thanks.
