When Sonoran Steel was still in the bumper business I got on the list for one of the last bumpers. I asked Steve to build the main beam and the wings since I had some customizations in mind. He did just as I asked. He built a main beam, the wings and all of the attachment points. Steve provided the steel that he would have used to build the remainder of the bumper. He even delivered the parts prior to a run last summer in NM.

This is what I started with, main beam attached.

Depending on what kind of wheelin' you do, I would worry about knocking
that antenna mount clean off. Nice looking bumper though.

Great looking bumper.
I actually found this site from this bumper.
I am designing a rear swing away bumper for my '85 4runner, and I will be borrowing some of the great designs here.

Can some people post more pics of mounting methods used?
Thanks

Those are dimples are engineered crumple zones! :lliar: 16 tons of pipe bending might and no need to bolt it to the floor, but that thing sure is heavy. I traded my services to a friend in PA who needed his Honda Civic trans rebuilt.

Pressure tested up to 150 psi......It's 3/16 tube......It could take a lot more...but no need.....Little soapy water.....and the welder...does the trick!...all sealed up!

damn bruce, are you seriously down to 2 days to fab that from start to finish???

or did you have it mostly done?

2ndGen
08-19-2008, 08:36 AM
it takes about a full day just for fitting. i went back for the second time because i needed him to do some custome fab work for the budbuilt skid i bought used.

there are few design changes for good, i believe mine is the first one he made with hydrolic break and plasma cutter. i have to leave it to Bruce to get the details.

Lee
08-19-2008, 08:50 AM
oh it was done beforehand and he made adjustments during fitting?

if it really is down to 2 days per bumper, id crank em out like crazy!

check Ebay for a pipe notcher . . . I bought one of the $60 ones and it's worked fine for the last 4-5 years with no sign of loosening up. I'm not sure, but I think Tony 2ndGen) may have gotten one also.

ill be doing 1.5 inch .120 wall tubing for my bumper, with some plate in there where needed, so i need a serious bender. i dont think that HF bender will work.

yes ill buy a low cost notcher. no need to spend huge bucks on that.

Sean, you saw my front and rear bumpers (1.5" schedule 40 = .145" wall) - those were done with my HF bender that I got it in trade for transmission work back in PA. I have the one with a 16 ton ram, it'll bend just about anything I can throw in there.

finially got the tailpipe re-routed. originally i wanted the pipe coming out of the muffler, then go upwards over the frame, then coming down out of side of the bumper. but after talking to several shops, there's no space to weld the new tailpipe, the only way is to remove the muffler, bent/fit the new pipe, weld it, then put the muffler and tailpipe back on together. that would cost me around $120+. so i decide to just have the very end part re-routed, $50 out of the door.

This may sound like a complete noob question but,
What is the hinge piece that everyone is using for the swing out carrier?

My stock roof rack finally took a dump, and after getting the spare off from down there I have come to the conclusion that its just not the best place to put a spare, plus with top heaviness and such, it would be best to move it to the back.

So I will be designing an bumper soon and cutting it out of cardboard first to test fit it and cut it, but while i do that i want to start collecting supplies for it.

Damn it I timed out responding to your question. Google swing out tire carrier and spindle and you'll find about 30 different manufactures that use some sort of heavy duty metal spindle. Some people have them attached to custom tube and plate bumpers while others use the stock bumper and mount the spindle on top a support bar behind the stock bumper.

Most are trailer spindles with tapered bearings, though I have heard of some breakeage using only 1 hinge (too much bending stress?).

I like that, it's clever and if needed you could lock the swing out in one position and have it stay (like if you need the tailgate down) . . . one thing I don't like on that specific bumper, I've seen bigger latches on KMart tool boxes

Yeah, overall the bumper is so-so, but I like the hub idea. Being able to open it and lock it to hold it in any position is pretty cool. Especially if you are sidehilled and opening the carrier uphill. Also, if you used an aisin one, it could be used as a spare hub if need be.

Thats why you sould build the hitch into the bumper and then reinforce the frame and other such areas to handle it. Thats my take on it anyways.

I agree, hence why I don't like the fatmouse rear bumpers. Looks/is similar size to the stock bumper (although much beefier), and doesn't integrate the hitch, so no gain whatsoever in ground clearance. Till I get a bumper made, I run the stock tinfoil and hitch. :)

I've been looking at this one from Blazen offroad for awhile and keep coming back to this design
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t287/Blazenoffroad/DSC03932.jpg
http://www.4x4mecca.com/forum/attachments/vendor-forum/1943d1181108444t-rear-winch-bumpers-tire-carriers-blazen-offroad-rear-tire-carrier-side-shot.jpghttp://www.4x4mecca.com/forum/attachments/vendor-forum/1944d1181108444t-rear-winch-bumpers-tire-carriers-blazen-offroad-rear-tire-carrier-down-3.jpg

the design looks stout and won't have the torsional stresses on the bumper that a traditional swing out does (cause of failure for most single hinge systems). I also think I can run smaller diameter tube with this design to save some weight. I might not be able to get to this project for a little while though since we're in the middle of land purchase/construction stuff

id strongly recommend against the swing down carriers. i have my hitch carrier and i hate it when im using the cargo door alot (hauling groceries, tools, etc)

Good Times
07-23-2009, 04:20 PM
My first design for the rear tire carrier was a swing down. The biggest drawback was the sheer weight of trying to lift a 35" tire back up. Also with the swing down design it really takes away the easy accessibility to the cabin from the rear.

I never really run around with the tailgate down anyway. My thought was to offset the tire to the driver side so my "over-the-shoulder vision" isn't blocked, and I can still get into the back through the window (I don't go into the back much anyway, but it might hamper sleeping in the back - didn't think of that). For removability, with the 5/8" Delrin hinges I could just use a standard receiver hitch pin to attach the hinge to the bumper tabs.

Good points though, thanks. I'll have to spend some time with a measuring tape and figure out how far I can actually offset it and if it would allow me to still get in/out through the window (don't plan on ever going bigger than 33" - maybe keep the passenger side brace tight to the tailgate?). My problem with swingouts is how to securely/neatly mount the upper hinge and how to limit the swing/make it lock open (just don't like many of the ideas I've seen)

Here's one other design I was thinking of emulating, from The Red Chili (http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/showthread.php?t=2637) - except his upper hinge also u-bolts to the roll bar, probably just keep the upper hinge lower to the bumper
http://redchili.smugmug.com/photos/297087638_ikZur-M.jpg
http://redchili.smugmug.com/photos/243316357_dZuMd-L.jpg

This one was also a neat idea (from Addicted Off Road (http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/showthread.php?t=2637) - thread from that other site (http://www.yotatech.com/f116/started-my-new-rear-bumper-tire-carrier-162558/)) & having the hinge horizontal would spread out the torsional load, but I'm not sure it's more than just a novel idea (still issues with getting in/out the back anyway)

yea that last design is nice and simple. if the tire were offset behind the driver as much as it could be and swung out to the driver side, you could get some leverage with the lower bar to help lift it up. i like that the weight of the tire will hold it open for you if your parked on level ground.

04 Rocko Taco

True enough Corax, if you were to emulate that last design from addicted off road, and offset the tire to the hinged side.... it would help hold it open on level ground, and would also aid in the leverage of having to lift a tire/wheel combo along with that steel.
Although instead of swing up and over, could you not make it a swing out, and use some of those hydraulic rams like hatchbacks have on the hatch to help hold it open?

Mine. I will be cutting this off in the future for a tire carrier setup, but we do these on 3rd gen 4runners.

That lambo one above was on my last 1st gen 4runner. It actually worked pretty damn well. Even in off camber situations. The strut helped control it a lot. In comparison to the weak spinde type carriers, this worked excellent and the tire had no vibes at all. Even on wash board roads.

Good guess, but that would have to be on the opposite side of center. It is actually the OEM 4-pin trailer wiring connector. I made it so that I just have to pop off the rubber cover, and plug in the trailer connector. It has easy access, and is well protected.
