I guess I pissed off the park ranger, he came out and remarked "Your gonna pull it out with that little rope?" Then he tried to intimidate me by asking for credentials, I mearly went on with the process and Vince had a long converastion with him, with threats of citations etc.....guess he got pissed he didn't get his kickback from a $2500 quote from a tow service he recommended. Needless to say he sat at the bottom as we pulled the truck out.

Before Charles showed up to lend a helping hand I had already pulled the 4Runner down the slot to the area where the extraction took place. the photo below is after we had pulled the rig past the tough part. I had Charles winchline through the top to insure it wouldn't rollover, due to both down hill tires were off their beads and no way to swap them out.

http://bruce.calrockx.com/4runner/misc/winching.jpg

The 4Runner was originally further down, out of sight. I actually got lucky when I first set-up, banked on it rolling down hill once I started the angle pull, it did just that, rolling back about 35' and ended up exactly where I needed it. It took every tow strap and all my line just to reach, I would have loved to had snatch blocked it, but it was just too far away. An ATV was recently stuck at that location, so all the brush had been cleared for it's extraction.

Yeah, I missed that ranger incident. As I was driving up I wondered why that ranger-looking guy was just down at the staging area watching. Oh well.

By the time I got there, Bruce had repositioned the 4Runner to pretty much make it a straight shot up the hill, backwards. Between the two of us, the process was pretty smooth.

It didn't start unfortunately...severed ignition wires....but with some careful towing and achoring, we got it back to the street.

Here's Charles acting as the brake man bringing it down the hill, one of the electronic boxes got torn apart, preventing us from getting it running.
http://bruce.calrockx.com/4runner/misc/charles.jpg

Finally got it to the highway, where I waited til his buddy showed up with a tow dolly. Note how well the roof held up after rolling over around 10 times.

Hats off to you guys. That's the sort of community that we were hoping to build at UY. That sort of self-less assistance embodies what we're about. Damn good thing funrunner was able to link to his thread and not be censored.

You guys are AWESOME!

Man that is a crazy day right there. Also glad all are safe.

Bruce good point about the roof. It is strange that we were talking about that last Friday and now have yet another example of how sound the roof is for low speed roll overs.

funrunner sorry this fine example was at your expense!

The best part is the 3 occupants came out with no injuries, that must have been one wild ride. Ironically he just got the 4x4 runner to replace his 2x4 runner(which he still owns) I told him, now just swap all the 4x4 parts over, then part out the rest.

The tow truck company said they would need 2 f250 supercharged superduties and 6 men to do the extraction. I guess they weren't as experienced as bruce. haha 2 runners and 3 men!

Way to go guys! That looked like a very cool recovery. Everyone deserves a pat on the back. :king:

Bruce and Charles, you should leave a sign down at the bottom that says "If you can read this, call Bruce and Charles... But only after you call the towing company for a quote" Than you could make a little dough for mods :hillbill:

Seriously though, way to show how good us Toyota guys have it for community help.

Well my hats off to you guy's for getting that out of there!! I am just a little curious, how in the heck did you get that down there besides rolling over about 10 times?? Did you just get off the edge of the trail or were you actually trying to get to the bottom of that canyon?? and I couldn't really see any trail to follow, I hope you were practicing "Tread Lightly" manovers.... copy and pasting this from the other thread. . "this place is bad terrain and has no forgiveness just cliff's on either side, he got a good 25mph with no brakes before deciding to just turn right for the greenery instead of going over any of the other sides."

Don't know how I missed this thread for so long. I'm sorry this happened. I can't help but apply the 'all for one and one for all' maxim more often associated with The Three Musketeers; a novel written by Dumas.

It's good to see one in need aided by his brothers. It is right to see the fallen runner extracted by fellow runners and escorted to the trailer. It's nice to be associated with folks as willing and able to help as y'all.

Seen this vid, and thread, and pcitures before, but now that it has resrufaced, I want to once again give my thanks to you guys for showing what kind of community we have!! Excelent work...

Only thing I might have done differently, is winch with the hood up... Have a spotter out to the side to watch whats going on, but if've got the hood up, it gives a good stop for a broken cable before it snaps back through a windshield or something... Just a thought.

Only true if it was a steel cable, synthetic line reacts differently when it snaps, there was no safety issues with this pull.
