I have an opportunity to pick up a recently rebuilt A340F auto tranny from an 85 4runner for cheap. Will this work in my runner? I currently have the A340H with V6. I understand that the t-case is separate from the trans, and Marlin makes the doubler adapter I would be interested in running in the future. Where is a writeup on what modifications will be needed to install it?

I need to make a quick decision. Thanks in advance.

IF...IF the A340F out of the 85 is the same one that is in the T100 with the 3VZE, then yes it will work. One thing for sure is that you will need a way to convert the mechanical speedo output from the old A340F to the electronic speedo in your 95. I'm faced with the the same thing - not because I'm using a A340F, but because I'm using gear driven transfer cases.

And you'll probably need to use your torque converter, bellhousing, oil pump and planetary from your A340H (guessing). I doubt the BH for the 22RE is the same as the 3VZE. I had to do this switcheroo with my trans to mate to the 1UZ. All A34_x have the same bolt pattern where the BH bolts up.

BTW, I have a bellhousing and torque converter from a 5VZ if you have a need. Only 67k miles on them.

According to this...

There is only 1 A340F. I just wonder if it is worth the effort.

Since Inchworm has a way to put a doubler on the A340H, it might not be worth the effort. BUT, to do the Inchworm kit, you need to take a lot of the A340H apart - that's a negative.

Swapping out the stuff at the front of the A340F trans that I mentioned is easy as pie.

With the Marlin VSS unit, you don't need to do the tailhousing modifications they mention in the article (at least that's my understanding)

95 4Runners have a cable drive speedo. So, he wont have to change anything. Besides, even if it was different, all he would have to do is switch out the speedo sender and it will work.
