I'd like to start a wheelin trip thread for the above date. I had a blast on last year's run and thought that Lance did an awesome job of organizing the runs. I am not geared that way (organizationally speaking) but thought we could at least begin some sort of plan for that weekend.

Glad I found you guys - kinda out of the loop and all.

Cangrats on the new site.

just a quick fyi, this weekend is the same weekend as the june lake event. :)

i'd love to do a bb but i highly doubt i'll have anything ready and running for any events this year so if i'll be riding shotgun on many of the upcoming events for some time :D

Point taken. This is another option for those that don't want to make the drive up there.

Will have to see how things go as we get closer. Really want to head out with the gang.

Andy that front bumper is just sick! Congrats on the new baby. Hope mom and baby are well.

freejake3
06-11-2007, 09:28 PM
That's why I started this so early. The more time folks have will hopefully bring everyone out.

If you like the bumper, check out the link to some additional armour.

Thanks for the good wishes to the family.

Those both look great Andy, how long did the front bumper take? Was it very difficult?
I think that is one of the next things I need, a good front bumper.

As far as this run I think I'm out, since I'll be working that weekend.
If it changes to the weekend before or after let me know.

Nice belly skid Andy. You are really fabbin up some cool swag.

"...how long did the front bumper take? Was it very difficult?

Thanks Rob...it took me a good month or so. Never could get a full day in at any one point. Taking that long did give me plenty of time to think about form/function. I plan on dropping a winch in the front at some point. The hardest part was getting all the angles figured out on the round tube.

I plan on going with you guys and TTORA. Count me in.

blacksheep
07-09-2007, 09:28 PM
TTORA main board has no thread for big bear, so I started on. SoCal TTORA Chapter has Aug 24-26 - Big Bear??? I thought we were all on the same page and date like last year. What up with that?

Marc P
07-09-2007, 09:32 PM
I would rather go with a small group and run more trails.

I want to be sure we camp at a place that allows fires...here are a couple of my ideas

im not sure if any fires are being allowed on the mountain due to the 3-4 inches of rain we got down in the valley, the heat, low humidity, and winds.

ecchamberlin
07-10-2007, 05:09 AM
TTORA is great but the groups get so frickin big. I am up for what ever. Last year the Rangers said no way because it got so big. Maybe just the normal crowd and some others and not make a huge run of it is the way to keep the Rangers off our backs.

freejake3
07-10-2007, 06:14 AM
I want to be sure we camp at a place that allows fires.

Amen to that brother. After last year there's no way I'm not making a fire. Those Limoronas only keep you so warm.

I'll check into availability at those two locations. We can always hit a backcountry spot that is not very accessible to the Rangers as well. Not that I recommend that by any means.

We're just about a month away. Does anyone want to be Trail Boss? I've not wheeled enought in BB to lead and would sure hate to get the lot of us off trail.

I'm thinking the normal PotLuck dinner on Saturday - any problems with that?

Now - to try and get my rear bumper fabbed in time for John Bull.

blacksheep
07-10-2007, 08:39 AM
Im cool with a small group. I was just wondering if they where going to be out there. I put up a post on the board just to see, but as far as I can tell, TTORA is going the following weekend. Pot Luck, Nice, I know what my wife will be making.

providing i can iron out that little transmission issue and get some sliders welded on and my gps in working order by then, ill be there!

does anyone want to weld up sliders and weld them to my vehicle? not for free of course.

and im down for potluck. im sure i can con mom into making her super awesome mac and cheese, no kraft krap here.

ecchamberlin
07-10-2007, 01:49 PM
Yes a fire would be nice. I am thinking about getting a porta pit fire enclosure. Still will not help if it is in a no fires allowed season though.

Pot Luck! Hell yes. Do we want to put a theme to it (Mexican...) or just bring something?

freejake3
07-10-2007, 05:12 PM
Yeah - Let's do the Mexico cuisine. If it ain't broke.........

As for accomodations Tent Peg is full but I did find this

https://www.reserveamerica.com/updateShoppingCartItem.do

Unfortunately I can't swing the bulk amount right now but would surely pitch in when the time comes. Even 8 people would split the cost to $20 a person. Anyone willing to buck up? The sooner we do this the better. Otherwise we'll just backcountry camp and layer-up.

Marc P
07-10-2007, 07:44 PM
When I was in the Green Valley Lake area over Memorial Day we had a campsite at the GVL Campground. It was very nice...kinda small and quiet.

freejake3
07-10-2007, 08:00 PM
I'll check it for availability.

Not looking good.

http://www.recreation.gov/campsiteCalendar.do?sitepage=true&page=calendar&agency=NRRS&parkId=275&&startIdx=0

Recreation.Gov says there's availability at Hanna Flat and Crab Flats. Hanna is $22 per night while Crab Flat is $16. Crab FLat looks to be a little more our style in terms of privacy. I'll check the fire restrictions manana.

ecchamberlin
07-10-2007, 08:18 PM
Andy I am willing to put $20 in the pot if it makes it easier for yah. Just say the word brother.

Marc P
07-10-2007, 08:29 PM
I guess we should reserve a couple sites at Crab Flats or Hanna Flats. I like the idea of Crab Flats because it is very close to Holcomb Creek and Dishpan Springs....Hanna Flats is closer to John Bull

I dont have a current account with ReserveAmerica...

Marc P
07-10-2007, 09:27 PM
After reading the posts on Blacksheeps thread on TTORA, I am glad we are doing our own thing the weekend before :flipoff:

freejake3
07-10-2007, 09:44 PM
Unless we are desperate to group camp I say we do Crab Flats as well. It's not like we're covering a huge area that weekend anyway so proximity is not an issue. Showers - if the lady's require it - can be had at the Serrano Campground which is just to the west of the DIscovery Center on the North Shore of BB Lake.

Registering with Recreation.gov takes 2 minutes.

Here's some info on the campground:
http://www.recreation.gov/nrrs/Crab_Flats/Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?page=details&agency=NRRS&parkId=790

Most of these sites, except to #20, are available now:
http://www.recreation.gov/nrrs/Crab_Flats/Available_Campsites/r/campsiteCalendar.do?page=calendar&agency=NRRS&parkId=790
http://www.recreation.gov/nrrs/Crab_Flats/Campsite_Map/r/campgroundMap.do?camparea=3436&agency=NRRS&parkId=790

If we all jump on this northern camping area we could stay together in one area. I'll be making my reservation tomorrow after I hear from you guys regarding yeah or neah on Crab Flats.

Marc P
07-10-2007, 09:59 PM
Sounds good Andy...looking at the sites, maybe go for 10 and 12(shade and bathrooms)?? There is a 2 vehicle max per site, but 8 people..I wonder how strict they are with a couple extra trucks?

ecchamberlin

Did you get your camping spot?

I just assumed (we all know what happens when you do that right?) it was normaly run E - W. Apparently not. Just another reason why you need to step up to the plate for the lead position. All in favor say Marc.

im still not sure as to my status of being able to go. i might go abuse my truck on cleghorn and see if the transmission is stout enough to survive big bear.

ecchamberlin
07-12-2007, 05:16 AM
I say Marc for lead. HA HA!

Since we are there for the entire weekend if we do Gold Mtn if would be glad to lead that if Marc needs a break.

I am in the same position as last year at this time. If I am selected for E7/Chief, then I will be doing lots of training and not able to attend. So if I do, although it is a long shot, Marc can just take my campsite entirely and let someone else crash in on it as the second vehicle. I won't know until last week in July or the first week of Aug.

As it is Marc is the second vehicle in spot 13.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m253/affinis/sliders/PA230085a.jpg

I just farmed out my rear bumper to have a receiver hitch and two recovery points machined into it. Also got the frame-rail re-inforcement plates cut and ready to weld (Tacoma owners will be able to relate). Here comes BB.

If your going to be in the SD area, I had The Truck Stop (www.sdtruckshop.com) put them on. Very good welds and tested. A little pricy to put on, but when you see the rigs he is working on, there trophy trucks for Baja. Might have to schedule a date and to get it done, so seing a local club memeber on here might be able to it faster and for less money.

I have only used SDTRUCKSHOP so far, and I am sure there are plenty of others.

Here is what I had them put on.

Well, I don't who the part-time sucker I talked to previously regarding fires
in Big Bear (someone at the Big BEar Ranger Station) because they were wrong.

I spoke with a ranger in the Lake Arrowhead District and she said FIRES ARE ALLOWED in the campgrounds but to check in weekly prior to coming up. So I'll keep in touch as we get closer but as of right now WE CAN HAVE FIRES IN THE CAMPGROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEE HAW.

Mike - what are doing to your front axle?

blacksheep
07-18-2007, 06:36 PM
The Outer Yukon Cromoly 4340 35 spline axle shafts are always too long, and need to be cut down to the snap ring. This prevents the out Warn hubs from loocking in while driving. It's been annoying me for almost 2 years now. Finally took them out and to a shop. :)

You don't need a trailer, it just means that it has a bigger parking area for a trailer.

Sounds good to me. Lets just plan on leaving together sometime in the AM, if you need some more time, just call me. But would love to be on the road by 11AM. The traffic is horrible up around LA.

My wife will be making her famous Posole. (Pozole (from Spanish pozole, from Nahuatl potzolli) is a traditional pre-Columbian soup or stew made from dried lime-treated maize kernels with pork (or other meat), chili, and other seasonings and garnish (lettuce, oregano, cilantro, avocado, radish, etc.)

So we are contributing to the Cook out. :)

Those trails sound good to me too. It may require some ingenious spotting to get me through but that's the fun of it.

That area northeast of John Bull was my second option for some back-country camping if the campgrounds were full. There looks to be some killer views at trails end.

Since we're right there at Dishpan we could run that one on Sat. morning and the go from there. Any interest in Holcomb Creek? How long does that one take to complete with the amount of vehicles we have?

Hey all!

This is "Darx" from Yotatech. I am moving out of state in a few weeks and would love to get back up to Big Bear one more time. I sold the Taco and picked up an FJ a while back for something different. It's not really offload worthy yet but will be lifted on Wednesday with some new DR junk I got. If I can make it, it's doubtful but if I put on my sad face for work maybe someone will cover for me, I'd love to meet you guys up there and ride along with someone.

oh man, its going to be crazy! thats alot of people.

still enjoyable.

i worked all weekend on getting camping gear that hasnt been used in about 10 years in working order again. the lantern died on me so i had to buy a new one, but the stove worked awesome.

i will be up there about 3pm on friday. i have some campsite repairs to the truck planned, stuff ive been meaning to do and didnt get around to this weekend.

can we get an updated schedual of whats going on what days? id like to be able to kind of plan ahead and know what to expect, when i will have down time, etc.

computer screen is ready to go back in the truck thursday night, never got around to making a digital map display, so the laptop will be coming along also. got alot of wiring to do on thrus/friday to get lights ready to go, aux power points in the truck, the computer up and functional with buttons this time so i dont have to reset with a paperclip. new software needs to be installed and tested, not to mention updating my music selection and playlist!

if i can scrap enough money together i may go and buy an extra cv joint, since mine are pretty shot and need to be replaced and then rebuilt as spares.

Wow this is too good to be true. I just spoke with chelsea at the Arrowhead
Ranger Station (909-382-2782) and she said we are allowed to have fires in the
rings provided with each campsite. How's that. As long as there is a host
(someone to call the fire department) at the campground fires are allowed.
She did mention that if we are planning on having a charcoal BBQ that it be
placed within the fire ring itself. Sweet mother of campfires. Bring on the
wood. Not the best choice of wording but Mikey can relate.

On another note. Have we heard from either Brad on Smiling Jim. I think Brad
knows we all moved but did anyone inform Jim. It would be nice to wheel with
him again.

I'm bringing my fly rod, so I am down for fishing too. Are we running a night trail or an evening trail on Friday?

All packed up. Thanks Marc, for the help with the trailer this evening. Good to have good neighbors!

I will pic up a few of those bundles of firewood on my way up.

Any last minute things we need for the dinner?

Hoping to leave around 2pm. Will have to see if work wants me to leave at 2pm. LOL
