View Full Version : First Aid Kits... a must have

At a minimum everyone should carry some basic form of a first aid kit with them at all times especially going out on the trails. Accidents happen and you never know what and when things will go bad so being prepared is a proactive way to ensure you're prepared for some basic first aid support.

Ideally speaking having two separate kits would be best. The logic behind this is so that if you have a minor injury there is no need to cross contaminate or even fumble through the other items for the simple patch up. Likewise when you are dealing with a trauma you don't want to be fumbling through your kit locating the necessary items. The smaller pack makes it easier to pack in your bag if you decide to leave the vehicle for a short hike too!

With this in mind here's a short list of various first aid kits that I've been able to come across. I have not tested many of them but I have read from various forums and members in the community/industry that recommends many of the vendors below.

Adventure Medical (http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/)
Adwater Carey (http://www.baproducts.com/atwaterc.htm)
Emergency Medical Products (http://www.buyemp.com/category/First-Aid-Kits.html)
Galls (http://www.galls.com/category2.html?*******ort=general_catalog&cat=2743)
Lifeline (http://www.lifelinefirstaid.com/)
Mountain Equipment Company (http://www.mec.ca/Main/home.jsp)
Zee Medical (http://zeemedical.com/zeemedical/NewZee/index.jsp)

These are just sample links that I've been able to compile so please post up other places that you've visited to purchase your first aid needs. Also keep in mind that the bigger ticket items are not as complete for trauma related injuries as they are really "basic" first aid kits with more stuff. For a full featured kit you'll want to ultimately build your own from scratch. These kits are a good starting point to get what you need.

Got pets? Don't forget to have a dedicated kit for them too!

I know for awhile, Costco had a real good first aid kit. It even had a smaller first aid kit in it for packing in your bag if you leave the car. I need to get another one because right now I carry the small one plus another small one that I already had and the good one stays in the wife's car. When wheeling or on trips, they all go with us.

This is like the one that I have, but I think this is the updated version.

First aid kits are an excellent suggestion. I would go on and further add that if anyone offroads they should consider obtaining a Wilderness First Aid certification + CPR.

The EpiPens are definitely a great idea to have around and is something I always take with me although it's not for myself. You never know when someone may get stung by a bee for the first time and get an allergic reaction.

Yes this is important..I have a main kit in the runner and a mini kit to take with me when i head for rides.Good thing too, chain snapped on me making me eat rocks which gashed my finger to the bone. I was able to address the wound, then the bike..although i still did need 4 stitches.

I know some of you folks here get to some very remote places, I would look at one of the serious EMT units from www.Galls.com You need things like suchers,(sp) hemo's and other basic med tools, (look under trama kits) and rubber gloves, plus blood clotting options also for you who haven't checked lately look at your meds in the kits and make sure they haven't gone past expiration dates... check out www.Galls.com they have Quik Clot in powder and also in a gauze like bandage now, you can buy it individually or with a good trauma kit. Also be sure you read warning label colsly, if person is allergic to shell fish. DO NOT USE!! Also make sure that you inform ER techs that you have used it!!! TJ
