Good grief, its about time! Also, to me the most exciting news is what VW is doing. Last sentence of the article:

Diesel invasion coming to the US in 2010

Posted Jul 16th 2007 7:34PM by Xavier Navarro

Good news for diesel lovers in the US: In around 2010, GM, Toyota, Honda, BMW, the Chrysler group, Nissan, Audi and others will offer diesel engines in cars and SUVs. The exception will be Ford, which considers that they're too expensive for passenger vehicles.

Actually, Siemens Automotive (one of the largest diesel injection suppliers) forecasts diesels sales of about 867,000 units in 2012, up from an estimated of 653,000 this year. In contrast, hybrids' growth forecast will be higher, with forecasts of 510,000 units for 2012 and 193,000 this year.

GM was the last to announce such motors in the Saturn Aura and Cadillac CTS. GM has an extensive range of diesel offerings in Europe, although the two announced powerplants will differ from the European versions. One is a 4.5-liter V8 for the Hummer H2 and the Chevy Silverado/ GMC Sierra pickups. The other is a 2.9-liter V6 made by VM Motori S.p.A., an Italian engine maker (they already powered some Jeeps during the 90s for the European market). GM wants to make clear that the new diesels aren't gasoline-converted powertrains, which ruined diesel reputation in the early 80s with the troublesome Oldsmobile V8.

Current diesel offerings for the US market this year are some Mercedes cars and Jeep Grand Cherokees, beside heavy-duty pick-ups. Next year, Volkswagen will introduce 50-state TDIs in all the range.

Nice, looks like my work truck needs to last just a few more years. Hopefully Toyota will have a 3/4 ton diesel at that time. :D

Thank god! Diesels are by far the most underrated power plant in America today; I look forward to being able to get a used Jetta TDI sometime in the future for a nice commuter.

Not sure about VW still, the reliability scares the heck out of me. I would absolutly love to see a ~ 2l 4cyl toyota turbo-diesel with a 5 or 6 spd MT in the tacoma, FJ or 4runner. Something viable for me to get from a salvage yard in about 10 years and drop into the 85. Just something with similar HP, tons of torque and great mpg.

I was considering purchasing a crew cab diesel pickup until I saw what one of these things could do. I will NEVER need that kind of power (Towing a livestock carrier with 15 head of livestock). That was somewhat of an epiphany for me, so, getting a smaller diesel in a V6 configuration would be nice.

Can't wait for this, thanks bob for the heads up...

I don't know why Toyota doesn't already bring them in! They are currently using them in foreign markets and to have them certified for the USA wouldn't be to hard. They are already in Canada, so why not here??? TJ :headscratch:

They might have them out west, but I haven't seen a single TD Hilux up here yet. Nice to see Toyota finally step up to the plate for putting diesel in north america too. Seems like we're living a bit of irony in the sense that all the 3rd world countries (already driving TDs for many years) have something we want.

The main reason why they haven't imported diesels into the US is because of the grade of fuel avaliable.

Dang now I might have to buy an new vehicle......... better yet now I'll be able to upgrade mine!

Looks like Toyota only plans to release a diesel version on the Tundra and stick to the hybrid technology for all others.

Im more excited that VW decided to release diesel engines for Audi. The B8 model Audi A4 (2009 model) will have 5 engine options, 3 being diesel.
