Alrighty, figured I might as well kill the afternoon by posting up a build thread with some pics.

Here's what I bought almost 2 years ago, from the sellers pics
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/ForSale/pass_side.jpg

the rusty underside was scaring everyone else off
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/ForSale/under.jpg

So I flew to PA and picked it up, then drove it about 1000 miles home.
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/ForSale/Front_axle.jpg

Got it stripped down and the front axle out of the way first thing
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/rusty/EXT_01.jpg

after getting after it with the sandblaster I feel a lot better about the integrity of the frame, except for the last 12" or so and the tire carrier, they need plated up.

And at about that point I ran out of steam, and it sat there for over a year. Wife was getting ticked I think. Finally this spring I got back after it.
Got started painting the frame with POR-15
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/DS_frame.jpg

Cleaned up the axle
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/axle_clean.jpg

Got the POR15 topcoated in black and the new OME springs under there
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/frame_ome.jpg

4crawler shackles - very nice and very beefy
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/shackle.jpg

tulsa_sr5
08-13-2007, 02:52 PM
so this last week I got the knuckles stripped down
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/axle_bare.jpg
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/dirty_knuckle.jpg

and used the Marlin rebuild kit to put them all back together
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/painted_knuckle.jpg

upgraded to the trail gear rockrings
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/rock_rings.jpg

installed 1.5" wheel spacers from Marlin and managed to get it back on it's own 4 wheels for the first time in almost 2 years
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/FR_CLN_WEB/backonwheels.jpg

I'm still fighting with the stock tie rod, and need to reconnect the rest of the steering too. Then it's time to lift the rear of the body to give me some room to blast the few parts of the frame I couldn't reach before, more paint, fix up the rear of the frame, yada yada yada. Hopefully I can keep some momentum going.

very nice. by far the best year of the 1st gen. SFA, EFI (right?) and generally being just awesome because its a 1st gen 4runner.

nice to see one more saved from the scrap yard. shes beautiful.

whats your plan with the vehicle? dd/trail or one or the other?

Thanks, not sure about beautiful yet, but hopefully soon. Def. going to be a DD+ type rig, at least at first. The more I get into it and the longer it takes me, the more the little costs add up and stuff gets pushed out of phase 1. At the very least I need to patch up the frame some, new shackle hangers in the rear, timing chaing guides, new gas tank, and enough body work to close a couple holes around the rear wheel wells. New rear springs, get rid of the blocks it has now. The interior is all in the attic now but is actually quite nice for the year. It ran great too, really just needed some serious help with the rust.

Long term goal is to make sure I never find myself following Intrepid down one of his trails :hillbill:

No problem man, glad to help (and mock). :D

One thing, looking at those pics, it looks like you re-used the stock u-bolts. While I have never experienced it personally, I have always been told that you need to replace them with new ones once you remove them because they get stretched and are not reliable to use again. If nothing else, it is a good excuse for u bolt flips. ;)

Good eye! I forgot to order new ones along with my springs, so I tossed the old ones back on for now. I'll order all new ones when I'm replacing the rear springs and swap then in then.

I think this thread should be moved to the lamest builds ever forum.

oh wait, it's my thread. crap. :chair:

Anyway, it sat most of the year again, got going again on it this spring with some decent results. All of the frame is now painted and rust free, and the last 18" or so are well plated.

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/PF1.JPG

I'm a little worried about the shackle angle, but don't have all the bushings yet to fully install the springs and see if it flattens out once weighted,

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/RS1.JPG

I've managed a bunch of the little stuff with help from here, new fuel and brake lines installed, gas tank treated and ready to install (did the por-15 treatment on it)
brake lines from marlin installed, ready to make the last connections once I drop the body back down.

So that last big job is to tackle the body work. If you scroll back up to the very first pic, that aluminum sheet riveted over a hole in the body aroung the gas tank filler. Figured we could do better,

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/GTPP.JPG

Don't want to talk about how many hours i spent on such a little piece, but it fit pretty well so i got it welded in

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/GTAW1.JPG
http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/GTAW2.JPG
http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/GTAW3.JPG

look at all that grinding work i made for myself! but it tuned out pretty clean

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/GTAG1.JPG

Not perfect, but I'm really happy with it. Lots more to go as I try to get it ready to fire back up soon.

edit, oh and i cut out the rear crossmember, it was toast. Made a new one with a pair of 2x2x1/8th angle pieces, and a used tire carrier to keep my spare in the stock spot. And I replaced the front ubolts with new OME ones because intrepid told me too, and the stock steering hit the old bolts.

Probably in junior high :tongueout: it seems like I have had it torn apart in my garage forever. 3 years this november.
Thanks for the kind words both of you. My company got bought out and the vacation policy changed. As a result I have to take about 8 weeks off this year or I lose it, so that's given me some nice chunks of time to work on it. Now that the finish line for phase one is in sight I'm hoping I can keep up my momentum unlike in the past. The biggest danger is I just opened the pool up yesterday, once it gets hot out the choice on a saturday between sweating in the garage and drinking cold beer by the pool is a tough one.

How hard was it to get the entire frame coated with POR-15 while the body was still on the frame?

So, making some more headway. I want to get the stuff done on the body around the gas tank before I remount it, and I'd really like to get the tank back in so i can move it around. Anyway, here's some of the patchwork I've been doing on the wheel well,

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/PWWW1.JPG

and have both rear fenders cut out and ready to redo

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/DF1.JPG

Also, when i was working on the frame before, this is the setup I used to lift the body up off the frame

http://carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/08/RBL1.JPG

It looks scarier than it was

tulsa_sr5
05-26-2008, 06:29 AM
Getting the body lifted up def. helps, I did temp lifts, front then back. Used scrap 4x4 blocks to get it a good ways up off the frame but the tops of the frame rails were still really tight. Even with the gas tank and exhaust etc out of my way there where lots of tough spots. If I had to do it over I would probably spend a little time and figure out a way to safely get the body another 4-8" up off the frame. It just took forever getting any spot clean that I couldn't get the grinder on. I don't envy you, PA is murder on old toyota's.

opening them up just a little. The inner lip on the wheel well was rotten so I cut another 1/2" or so and started building a new lip out of the thicker sheet i have. Don't really need more room for tires at this point.

OK, so I haven't taken any pics but I have been getting a little done here and there. I really need this driveable in the next couple weeks. So....

here's where I am on the drivers side
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/DSF1.jpg
the one above shows the 18ga steel strip I bent to make the inner part of the wheel well lip. It really makes the whole thing solid

and another
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/DSF2.jpg
I figured as long as I had to jack with the last foot or so I'd remove the drop along the bottom from the end to the rear wheel. Should make building a bumper a lot simpler.

and the passenger side is done!
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/PSF1.jpg
not perfect, but at least it's rust free and strong, had to do all the way from the back corner to the rocker panel right where the door starts. Fun stuff.

sorry for the crappy pics, My wife took a couple in a hurry to send to my dad to check out. It's far from perfect but I think with a very thin layer of bondo it will look ok to anyone but the hard core toyota fans will notice. I simplified a couple small things just to make my life easier and openedup the wheel wells about a half inch just because they were rusted.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how the body filler went on today, trying to decide how perfect I want it. And in retrospect I'm not sure if it was really worth is or not, I mean it was cool to work over nearly every square inch of it, and I learned a TON. But, it would have been so much easier to just buy a clean one. I think overall the stuff I learned is worth it. If nothing else the welding has been a blast.

Do you have pics of your 86 in another thread? I'd like to see where you are with it.

Just saw your second post, don't know dale, but I read a lot of his post on YT, guy knows his stuff. I met cory, colsoncj is his yotatech name, we wheeled at disney once when I had my 97. I think he's out your way. If you need any parts for your 86 there's a guy on the tulsa craigslist parting out an 87 I think, he lives here but the truck is somewhere in nw ar. I got a few things from him, really nice guy. He actually just posted up for sale a trailer he made out of the back half of the 87 for 300. If i had to do it over I'd buy that off him and use the body panels to fix mine.

Hello, Cory! I need to call you. I need a driveshaft, buddy. :hillbill:

Yeah, tulsa...I met Cory from YT.

I don't have any pics, yet. But, I've deliberated heavily over what to do about the body rust on mine. I wanted to buy an '87 4rnr SR5 that had no motor and equipped with an auto and all the SR5 accountraments. Sunroof and interior needed repairing and some very minor body work, but the plan was to restore it over time and then just drop my 22re and 5spd in it. Would have been real clean. Alas, there were complications in communication with the owner, money ran a bit thin (wound up needing to rebuild my motor.....timing chain failed), and so I gave up on the idea at that point. I don't know.....there's always the chance that could actually happen....I could try that route, again...., but I figure I could also get a welder and do what you've done. I'd have to learn to use it...no big deal, but I'd also have a welder for other things. That'd be nice, too. Just however things appear to wanna go, ya know?

colsoncj
07-22-2008, 04:42 PM
well hello there to you too buddy!!!

Give me a call anytime, still got my number? If you need a shaft, talk quick, they're goin like hotcakes. On your's if its rusted bad, cut the body off and build a truggy... or buy my almost rust free 85 :) but enough thread hijack!!!

Brian, like i said, when you get it wheelable, let me know, I'd love to do some wheelin, even if it is just riding in the passenger or back seat!!!

07-26-2008, 05:54 PM
OK, in my crazy attempt to have this thing driveable before we move out of this house I'm making some more headway. No pics, but i pulled the oilpan again, and looked up to check out my timing chain guides. Tried to take a pic but they all sucked. Anyway, WOOT! good looking metal backed guides are in place. The previous, previous owner must have done that in the past. I also tried to cheap out and run some stock monroe $20 shocks, but even fully extend they are too short. Going to have to get the OME's i guess.

and on with some pics...

so i swapped in the last of the new ubolts
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/new_ubolts.JPG
if you get OME front leafs get the ubolts too, see how the corners are flattened out? Have to have that for the steering to clear the bolts with the change in angle. Had to use some clamps to squeeze them together for the bottom plate to go on, the springs make the bolts flare out too wide

so, don't bash me too hard for my amateur body work, i circled a couple spots i may redo at some point.

OK called in sick and took care of some stuff on the truck. Brakes are all hooked up ready to bleed. Parking brake works again. Gas tank in and all lines connected. Air cleaner back in. Figured a way to easily bypass the rear aux heater, since those hardlines were toast, using one of the hoses that was there turned around. Plus other random little crap.

And I made some good headway on the rear bumper. Need to get pics of the brackets when i have then out again tomorrow or saturday, but here's what i did for the main bar

not sure if this helps or hurts, but i cut a groove into the bottom of the cross bar
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/RB1.jpg

and the last section of mounting bracket slots into it
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/RB2.jpg

all welded up
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/RB3.JPG

and ground down a bit
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/RB4.JPG

http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/RB5.JPG

so, before i do the same thing on the receiver, and cut a slot to recess it into the crossbar, someone tell me if it's a bad idea.
http://www.carnaptio.us/pics/85_4runner/july08/RB6.JPG

still need to add some more lateral gussets on the brackets and the receiver once it's on.

Other question, the fuel sending unit on the 85 was 2 wire. The one I got with my used tank of craigslist is 3 wire. Anyone know off the top of their head what i can do to make the gauge work? Edit, did a google search on pirate and I guess they added a low fuel light which explains the third wire on the newer ones so I'll just ignore that wire for now and maybe add an LED to the dash down the road.

Its is Good Idea for strength. Keep in mind the the bumper will want to bend towards the reciever when welded. The bumper might end up with a slight bow unless you back break it (bow it a little in the opposite direction before weld).

Also swapped the old glass in since it had a defroster, and that meant swapping all the wiring too. Still need to put the gray trim on it from the old one, but waiting on some silicone to dry. Had to run a ground wire across the bottom of the glass since the brackets that hold the glass up are different.

While taking my old one apart i realized that the bottom bracket was half gone, only lifting the glass from the passenger side. Also the inside felt guide was completely missing on the passenger side. Crazy thing is it still worked! Thats what I call good engineering.

also fixed a few minor things on the exhaust, and painted all three wiper arms flat black. And bought floor mats! Guess you would say i bled the power steering also, with the engine on turned it to full lock both directions, filling the resivior often. It had been making noise and now is dead silent. Need my shocks to get her tuesday and then it's time to get her insured and on the road. First drive i take will be to home depot to buy 15 or 20 bags of rock to drive around with for a few weeks, need these springs to flatten out. I have to be getting 3-4" of lift from these OME 2" springs

cleaned up the dash and seats, still not spotless, though the little steam cleaner did a great job.

thanks sean, the carpet and armest are clearly trashed but the dash looks better than the pics, all seems to be the same gray when seen in person. My camera clearly hates me.

OK, still no new pics, but she has a name now. And is street legal. Got her insured and registered, filled it up with gas and drove straight to home depot to buy a leveling kit. $50 later there's a blue tarp and 560lbs of concrete in the back. The rear end sits way back down, shackle angle looks good.

Isn't the wiper motor in your engine bay. Or are we talking the wiper transmission.

Oops we are talking rear :D

Again, no pics. But I bought a 12' tandem axle trailer, rewired and replaced the lights with led lights, and have started moving to the new place. 144 cubes of fury struggles a bit with the load, but the brakes are ample which is always my first concern. Tetanus is running great and I'm working her hard already. Need to get some poser flex shots on my storm shelter tomorrow.

Storm shelter wheeling > mall crawling :tongueout:

Step one: find real trail
Step two: drive on real trail
Step three: post pics of body carnage
Step four: purchase sawzall...I think you can see where this is going. :hillbill:

I hear ya Heath. Thing is, it's my dd now, 60 miles round trip. Need to take care of some basic stuff asap like the exhaust and valve noise. need to try and dial in the steering a bit too. Then I think I'll be comfortable driving it the 2hrs out to disney.

Yeah, thats right Heath, I will drive my rig to the trail. :tongueout:

  When I had a pitman arm fracture and then later break off on the trail I started thinking "what if that had fractured, but held on until I hit the highway? :tapedshut:

What you really should be bragging about is that you get to go to disney.
