Decided to take off the rear and do some work. Here is a list of what I will be doing.
A. Grind off all the rust on leafs, axle and calipers
B. Shaving an inch off the bottom for more clearance
C. Cut and Add new Solid Diff Armor. (http://www.solidaxle.com/products/diffcovers.htm)
D. Prime and Paint everything Black of coarse
E. Prime and Paint frame
F. Add bumpstops
G. Bleed the breaks
H. Remove diff. breather nipple. It's loose because the threads are stripped.(Since junk yard.)
I. Drill and Re tap the threads for the Breather.
J. Add new breather nipple and attach hose and run up high on frame.

Looking good so far Mike. Are you going to rattle-can for the paint?
If so, may I suggest the Rustoleum Textured Black. It's the shiznit
if you ever have to touch up the paint. The textured surface makes it
almost impossible to tell where you started/stopped from the last paint.

Keep the pics coming. I finally got my license bolted up directly below
the tailgate handle. Looks good. Next project will be to sure up the
corners of the rear bumper.

how much metal can you shave off the diff housing? curious

sweet little project

Well some go as far as the ring, and they take the ring as well and shave it. Im only taking about an inch. Which is like running a size bigger tire if you think about it.

Thanks Andy, will post pic's as I go. If anyone wants to swing by let me know.
Does any one know of a guy on the board that has a welder. I need some simple welding in a few weeks. Don't really want to pay alot out of pocket.

I will check out that paint. I need something strong in black and glossy. Glossy always cleans up better.

No, I want close to an inch, and I'm about 2/5 there. So not done yet, Its a 1 ton 14 bolt chevy axle, so yea, its thick. Its also called a Boat Anchor, because of its huge bottom lip and extra metal. Not no moe.

I would have lent you my sawzall had I known you were going to grind
it off. What thickness metal are you needing to weld? I might know
a guy..........

andy, if its the same guy that did the receiver on your bumper, OMFG. those welds were just beautiful!

mike, you sure you really need an inch of clearance? i guess the like 12 inches of ground clearance isnt enough? plus you just move the boulders when your axle hits them. haha.

I know, I need to buy one of those. Oh well, its just taking longer then I thought. All I need it a small U shape plate of steel welded to each of my U-bolt plate, to mount some bumpstops. Who do you have in mind?

Sean, the more the better. It will still be strong for pushing bolders aside. :)

neliconcept, Its very massive. There used on some military vehicles. Chevy has it the same rear end for the last like 30 years on all there 2500-3500 Gas and Desiel trucks. Its a 10.5 Ring Gear. :)

Nice project. That's amazing that there is that much metal you are able to get rid of. Glad to see you are getting that thing ready for Pismo :D

Call Josh @ TubingWorks (619 438 1160) for what you need. He welded my sliders and
does a killer job. He has also done the welding and fabrication for Mikey's rig.

Actually you have to go 2 sizes bigger, to gain an inch of clearance, thats going from 31's to 33's. Thats a nice mod!! I dont think there is much spare metal on a stock Toy Axle? if so, lets all get to it! keep the work and pics coming man!

I have used the Rustoleum Enamel with good results.

blacksheep

Thats exactly what I used. Yea, its very good, cleans up after wheelin, and is a good hard surface. Only prime and one coat is all I need.

There isn't much spare metal to come off the bottom of the stock Toy Axles is there?
This one obviously had beef to spare, but I dont think we would gain much by grinding the Toy axles, but it might be worth a shot.

blacksheep
10-02-2007, 09:43 AM
Not sure, Maybe 1/4 at the most.

After a month and a half, its off jack stand alley. I took my lazy ass time, and was in Mexico for a week, and phoenix and busy at work. Could have been done 3 days off, but the wife takes up my time too.

Today, I got off from work and was determined to finish this bitch off, and bolt the axle back on, bleed the breaks, fill the axle up with oil, added my clamp and hose and filter to the the breather, and found a sweet spot in the meantime to zip tie the filter nice and high and take it for a drive. Its about 4 feet off the ground, don't think I will be going deeper then that.

Dam it felt good to drive it around. Going to work tomm. in it. :) It felt more responsive for some reason and it rides well. I fixed the whole front end issue right before this project. So I forgot about gaining more power and steering ect.

Anyways, I think I found my problem to being a real ass around the house. I think I'm going to the garage to celebrate.

Nice job. Those are some serious chunks taken out of your rear tire. Looks like you spent a bit of time polishing the body too.

Are we still on for a BBQ at some point? You never called me back last Saturday...

blacksheep
10-28-2007, 08:55 AM
I was short staffed at work. Didn't you already BBQ that Sat. Lets have another one for sure. Maybe Watch a Paper View Event at my house or football or baseball game. I usually can take weekdays off. I plan on going on the Trail run/camp this coming weekend. Are you going?

Tanto
10-28-2007, 10:38 AM
Yeah. The only thing you missed was that I found out that I'm allergic to cats now.

I will be there this weekend.

blacksheep
10-28-2007, 05:12 PM
I am allergic too. I hate cats.

Tanto
10-28-2007, 08:08 PM
Because of that I now carry Benadryl and an EpiPen in my truck. My allergies are not playing with me anymore.

blacksheep
10-28-2007, 08:25 PM
Dam other things too? That bad?

Tanto
10-28-2007, 09:06 PM
Not really. More for peace of mind. It's good to have on the trails too because there are natural things that can spike a wicked reaction to someone who like me, never knew they had a reaction.

Nice finished pics.

They say our bodies change every 7 years. I got tested for every allergy
known to man a few years back and found out I'm allergic to cats, rabbits,
and almonds. Who knew.

Man I felt like poop when Ryan made an emergency exit from the BBQ last weekend. Sorry man. You have been over to my house tons of times. You and your girl even crashed there for a couple days when your truck got broken into. Never seemed to have an issue with it.

I can just make sure the cats stay upstairs while I have guest here.

One of the worst allergies I have heard of was to peanuts. Like really violently allergic reactions if they are anywhere near them. Some speculate that the childhood vacines we are given have some effect on adult onset allergies.

Oh yeah the truck looks good Mike. I also wrenched all weekend.
