slowheelin (Robb and Kristina) and I did an improptu prerun for the upcoming Pismo 4RJ. Also, they wanted to test out their new shocks and tires.

We met at their house (3 blocks from mine and I can drive dirt the whole way there, lol), then headed out to the Oceano Dunes. While we were airing down, a big chevy truck with a quad in the back got itself stuck in the soft sand right near the entrance. He was kind of in "no man's land" and no one was coming to his aid. He started airing down, so I headed over there after I aired down to help him out. He wanted to air down and try to get out on his own. :shake: He was almost on his diffs at this point. I let him try but of course, I yanked him out and towed him back to the packed sand. (sorry, no pics).

We went down the beach to where I thought would be a good camp area for the Pismo event and I grabbed the GPS coordinates. Then we headed out to the sand highway and took that back. We didn't do too much playing around as we still had more stuff to prerun. We hit up Chevron to air up part way on the way out, and some BK for our guts.

Next stop was Hi Mtn. Road about a 30 min. drive inland before it turns to dirt. Relocked my hubs and we headed up to Hi Mtn. Fire Lookout. This road starts out as a graded dirt road and then becomes a rough dirt road (2WD with high clearance can make it easy unless it has been raining a ton, then it might get tricky). It was really cool up there and it was raining all around us, which made for some cool pics. I think it took us about 45mins. of dirt driving to reach the lookout. The view is amazing and the road in has some cool spots driving through the oak trees.

I talked Robb and Kristina into doing a little bit of the Garcia Ridge Trail, since it is right there and I wanted them to see what their 4runner is capable of. Most of the fun and challenging stuff is right at the beginning of the trail so it makes for a nice little side trip. They did great on all the tough hill climbs and then helped spot me on one of the optional obstacles. From there we headed back to Hi Mtn. Rd. and continued inland to Pozo. There at the Pozo Ranger Station, we aired the rest of the way up and came back home.

I had an awesome time and Robb and Kristina did great in their 4runner. Kristina even said, "I'm so glad we didn't get a Jeep!"  It's so cool to start out at the beach, then you are driving through oaks, next you are on top of a mountain and can see the dunes in the distance, then you even get to do a little technical driving, and top it off with a nice paved drive home through some beautiful countryside. I even got to see a baby mountain lion. It was up on the road and was the size of a big bobcat (which is what I thought it was at first). Then it turned sideways to me and I saw its tail, I couldn't find my camera and by the time I got up to where it was, I caught the last glimpse of it as it dove into the bushes. :D That made my day.

Anyways, on to the pics.

Airing Down (am I seeing double :headscratch:)

view from where we parked for the short hike to the lookout (the lake is Lopez Lake and you can barely make out the strip of sand at the ocean, that is Oceano Dunes)

That was a blast and what a way to start off my wheelin' "career" on a black diamond technical trail. I'm very impressed with my 4Runner. We were a little nervous at first but once I figured out what our rig is capable of we were feelin' better about it.

I thought that too when I saw the side by side pics. We're going to do the hood and roof in black marine paint pretty soon. They're both oxidized so why not. :D

I know that is kind of crazy especially considering we live so close.

I can't wait to see it painted. That's going to give it a totally different look.

I'd better see ya at least for a little bit. Such a huge difference in the crowd compared to last year.
