I found this an interesting read.

http://autos.msn.com/advice/article.aspx?contentid=4025061&icid=autos_236&GT1=10367

and found this, within that article, to be quite a distinction between a Chevy Blazer and a 3rd Gen 4Runner:

But even if CAFE standards pushed cars to lose weight, Schewel says it could still be a good thing. To her, the "simple physics" argument doesn't hold up. "Cars are not simple objects colliding like billiard balls on a table. They are highly complex products engineered to protect you." Design and safety features make a huge difference when two cars collide. Schewel points out how a driver of a 1999-2002 Chevrolet Blazer is 26 times more likely to die in that vehicle than the driver of a similar model year Toyota 4Runner, even though both are midsize SUVs (the 4Runner is actually 200 lbs. less).

Any thoughts?

I agree that more weight does not make a car safer. I would rather strike a fixed object in a newer car with impact zones than in an old 6,000-pound Cadillac. The other side of the coin is those impact zones may absorb (crush) in so far that the passenger compartment is compromised in an extreme situation. Well-engineered crush zones and a strong passenger compartment will result in a safer car than just a heavy blob of steel.

I think the issue really takes on a crazy meaning when huge (F450) trucks/SUV's are in accidents with a Yaris sized vehicle. Like you said crumple zones are a huge improvement but they only go so far.

I saw a really bad accident on the 15 on my way home from Welks wheeling with Adv 4x4. The car was some sort of mid sized hit by a full sized work van. The car was so bad that I could not recognize the make or model and I consider myself a car guy.

My little Paseo is toast if I get hit by something that big...

Although the compact cars are bigger than they used to be (civic), the suvs and trucks/suvs have just become enormous.

I think he was simply mezmorized by my sarcastic Chevrolet emoticon. To be fair, I offer this:

I love my Toylet and yes it would drop like a rock. I feel sorry for me if I get hit by a big truck, but I even feel worse for the driver of it.
