Well, I made some progress tonight on the elocked rear axle I picked up. I was able to remove both axle shafts after alot of wd40 and some work (going to be sore in the morning). With no problems, except for a rounded off nut that is now stuck in a socket :chair:.
Any how I removed all the nuts/washers from around the third member/diff. but I'm unable to remove it. Is there some special way that I'm supposed to remove it that I don't know about?
I was under the asumption that all that needed to be done was to remove the axle shafts and the nuts around the diff. and it should just pull out. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Progress photo (working out of my parents garage since I live in an apartment):

yup remove axles and then all of the bolts around the pumpkin.
btw are you pull the diff to inspect or swap gears? otherwise you'll probably better off just swapping axles no? sorry not sure what you're trying to do exactly.
good luck :)

Yep, to inspect the gears and make sure all is well with it, since it came out of a wrecked 4runner. Plus, it makes it easier to load and unload. It will be heading to phoenix to get installed. Hopefully, next month.

The gasket might be holding it on still. Take a floor jack and push up on the end of the diff (near the pinion side) to break the seal.
What is getting installed in phoenix? I'm confused.

Swapping axles since this one has the elocker.

But why can't you do that yourself? It seems to me that if you have the skill to take apart the axle then you can swap them.
Oh, and I forgot you had already removed the axle from the truck so the floor jack idea won't work, but the principle is the same. Hit the diff with a big mallet or something.

In short. I stumbled across this axle one day at the salvage yard, they pulled the axle for me and load it into my 4runner, it has sat for the past few months getting painted and waiting to be pulled apart to make sure all is well with the gears (hernia surgery put a stop to work for a bit).
I can pull things apart no problem :hillbill: but I'm putting them back together is another story :headscratch:. Plus, I don't have the proper tools or know how to install it (haven't been wrenching long enough :chair:). It's also coming apart to make it easier to transport. Steve Schaffer is going to be installing it for me as well as wiring it up (not confident enough to do wiring). So hopefully, this clears it up :D.

Just looking for help/suggestions on how to pull the diff. that's all. There's no point in getting it installed if the gears are damaged. Others have suggest using a screw driver and a hammer or tapping around the housing using a block of wood. Thanks

that diff is probably stuck on there quite good. when i swapped my thirds, i had to put quite alot of upward pressure with the floor jack to break the seal. if you can find someway to prevent the housing to rotate around the axle tube...you should be able to break it loose. from then on..just pry in between the diff studs. make sure you've got a jack or some way to support it once it finally lets go...
..or you can just take a running swing at the nose of it (not the flange itself but the housing) with a BHF.
