So I took the starter out (all I was getting was a click)
on the 'ol ladys 95 Runner and found on of the soleniods
was bad (battery side). As I wrestled the crap out of
it for removal I dinged the plastic coupler pretty bad.
I managed to "fix" it enough to get everything back together
and installed only to now have the vehicle not start. There
is plenty of spark but nothing when I turn the key.
WTF. Something else to note is my stupidity at not disconnecting
the positive battery cable before starting the job. What
brought this to my attention was the positive battery cable
that goes to the starter hitting the frame and sparking.
Have I wasted some electrical circuit.
The plastic coupler seems to be OK but somewhat loose.
Need help before I take it into a garage.

Did you replace the solenoid or still using the old one. If you replaced the solenoid and it still isn't working, one thing you might try is getting a new starter and see if that works. If it does, you can decide to reman or old starter or just keep the new one.

Here's a pic of what I'm dealing with.

I replaced both solenoids while I had it on my bench.
This project turned into a real pain in the ass - and I've
got some patience mind you. It took me forever to get the
freakin' thing physically out of the truck. Unbolting it was
not even the problem. Lack of space was my enemy and in the
process of trying to squeeze it out I banged the shiznit out
of the plastic coupler.
Thanks in advance.

Rebuild the OEM one, do not get a new one or a rebuilt one, as it is by far a superious unit. Look on www.4crawler.com for his cheap tricks on fixing starter issues.

Yeah - I'll have to return to the webpage. Are you familiar with
the plastic connector I am talking about. Looks like the only way to
fix that is a new solder I'm guessing. COuld this be my problem or
did I fry something when that cable sparked on the frame.

Yep, very familiar with that connector. Mine was making intermittent contact from being 20 years old so I pulled the plastic junk off of it and cut the other end of the wire and put on a fresh wire crimp connector and haven't had any problems since.

INSIDE the starter is the wiring problem with that stupid
plastic connector.None of the FSM shows in detail what I'm
refering to.

What year is your Toy?

Anybody have a schematic for this BS?

Yeah - it ended up being the fuseable link. I guess when I pulled it the
first time I broke the plastic "nipple" that sealed it within the solenoid.
Ended up installing a new one.

For those planning on working on their starter - DO NOT PULL IT OUT
THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! After you take the access
panel off the fenderwell you can move various items out of the way and
pull it out that way. LIve and learn I guess.

Thanks for the help boys.
