I know we're all always looking to find ways to save money by making a tool or two that we need rather than buying the actual special service tool (SST) from the dealer. The crankshaft pulley holder is just one area where I've seen alot of people get really creative in how they solve the problem. I've seen everything from ones made out of 2X4's to stuff welded out of steel scrap to tools that could almost pass for the SST itself. So I figured I'd start a thread for the different tools out there that I've seen in an effort to help people do their own timing belt and other maintenance while keeping the cash outlay down.

So if you have an SST you made or have seen (crankshaft, cam, tensioner, whatever) for the 3.4L motor, post them up!

Here's a few attached:

Here's my version of the 2x4 SST.

I used 3/8" x 4" carriage bolts, 5/16" washers and 3/8" nuts. The centers of the bolts are at 2&7/8" (2.875".....this is the only part of the tool that needs to be fairly precise or it won't align properly with the crank pulley) and the relief for the socket is 1.5" dia (used a holesaw and as you can see on my tool there is room for placement error and it will still work fine). Very easy to make and it worked flawlessly.

I would have never thought of that 2x4" SST. Pretty clever.

Here is what I came up with for the crankshaft pulley holder. Some 1x1 square tube with a pipe at 90 degrees so I'd have room for the socket.

And this is my transfer case flange holding tool for getting the pinion nuts off after the tranny has been dropped.
