The gun show is coming up and I don't know a thing about them. Right now, I'll probably only be looking at receivers. I'll be searching around on AR15.com too.

Are there different kinds of receivers, different brands? Some better than others?

How about the parts for the rest of the gun?

years ago I used to build them up all the time, back then I could build a complete rifle for $300 including the reciever...... these days it's quite difficult to get around the laws.....

Recievers are all about the same, except for mfg date...... pre-ban, post-ban.... California rules still apply..... as long as it don't qualify as an assult rifle you can build it, in otherwords fixed 10 round mag.

with that said, you can still purchase any or all parts needed to make any configurations you like.

You'll need the proper assembly tools and a go no-go guage.....

It usually takes me under an hour to do a complete assembly, got all them parts memorized...hehe

At the show there will probably be a Cold War Shooters booth. This is where everyone I know with an AR (at least in California) has purchased their lower receivers. I personally have the Ameetec lower, it's worked fine so for and its also reasonably priced. If you want to spend a little more cash, I'd recommend the Patriot Ordinance Factory Lower, it's billet and has the HK style fire control engravings... pretty sweet. As for the build, are you planning on building a precision rifle or something for home defense?

There are also a handful of different calibers to consider that fit through a standard AR lower: 6.8x43mm SPC (nice all-around), 6.5x39mm Grendel (.308 Ballistics), .50 Beowulf (will destroy anything out to 400m) and 5.56×45mm NATO

Screw a fixed 10 round mag. Go with the U15 stock from www.californiarifles.com and your good to go for a detachable mag.

I will be building one very similar to the middle one pictured for my next gun. It will be in a .308 round. Hell, i think i will build one like the third one also. .223 for that one.

Go with Lewis Machine and Tool for your build.
http://www.lewismachine.net/catalog.php

If you buy the parts separately, instead of a complete AR from your local dealer, you’ll save approx. 11% excise tax collected when you purchase a complete rifle.

This is by no means the cheapest build, there are plenty of other manufacturers available. However for a quality custom AR, my next one will be a LMT build.

Curious why LMTs are number two next to Colts:
Comparison Chart of Major AR Brands: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=6642

Check out many AR builds on m4carbine.net: http://m4carbine.net/forum.php

Lower Assembly ($330):
LMT Defender Lower with Collapsing Stock and Standard Trigger

Upper Assembly (approx. $660):
LMT 16” Upper Receiver Assembly with Flash Suppressor (standard flattop upper receiver with 1/7 twist, chrome-lined barrel);
LMT Bolt Carrier Group, Handguards and Charging Handle.

Optics and Back Up Iron Sight:
Your preference.

Well, I didn't find any screaming deals on lowers at the gun show so I didn't get one. However, now that I look back, I should have got one anyway. I'll have to wait until the next gun show but definitely before the next elections.

But thanks, all, for the info. I'm still researching.
