...then look up. We had a knocking sound that sounded like it came from below somewhere. It sounded like something was flapping in the wind at freeway speeds and it was from the front center of the truck. I took off a plastic splash guard under the IFS thinking it was the problem but no luck.
So then I gave up and took it to the dealer and without even taking it around back, the service guy said the roof rack was loose. Sure enough, once we tightened it down the flapping sound was gone.
Check your roof racks.
