I'm thinking about getting one of these things - I need to have easier access to my email and the web, plus I am the last person in America without an iPod (kidding).

I have some specific questions - post up if you have one.

i dont have one, but messed aroudn with it quite a bit at the mac store twice. i could not get used to typing on that thing. but otherwise, its typical apple stuff: great interface, easy to learn, easy to understand, etc, etc. but something you should look into is something related to the data plan...lance was telling me about it and it sounded kinda funky. hopefully he'll chime in

What are your specific questions?

My coworker has had one for a month now, and we've played with it extensively. I'm pretty familiar with it, and I can ask him on the things I don't know.

FWIW, we refer to them as TriCorders, and you just made the nerd list. :D

3G support will be offered in 2008 (supposedly).

might want to wait until then cuz the net service is a dog right now.

btw i don't have it cuz i'm happy w/ my blackberry :D

like mentioned about, wait till 2008. Apple is suppose to announce a new 3G iPhone so internet speed will be much faster. They're anticipating longer battery life too. I've been waiting to get one till one with 3G comes out, then I'll bite the bullet and get one.

From what I'm reading about 3G is that it's a hog on power, so adding the 3G capability and improving battery life may be a tall order. Although there is acompany that managed to come up with a low power chip with all sorts of goodies on it including a 5mp camera.

I look at it like this, many of the places I go where and want to use this don't even have 3G capability yet (like the beach and other areas in PA). When they finally do get around to getting a 3G phone released, it will be big bucks initially - I'll wait until it comes down in price and then pass my 1st Gen phone to my wife. When the 2nd Gen is released, it will be "at least" $599. I won't spend that much on a phone.

My questions:

Re: Email
Does the email client pull the emails from the email server and remove them, or is like using an iPaq where it leaves the data intact on the server? (also how does it handle large attachments)

How well does the synching with a PC work? Do you end up having to go through all the emails again, or does it know which ones you've read.

Does this mess with "rules" set up in Outlook (I have rules setup to send emails to specific folders, etc)

I've used the EDGE network before (had a card for my laptop) and the performance was less than inspiring. I'm hoping that for mainly retrieving email with a lightweight cleint that it will be acceptable.

Ike - How is the web performance on the Edge network on this thing?

Wait at least until after Apple does its announcement in January.

From the people I know the keyboard does have a small learning curve. Predictive text and words come into play more as the phone learns. Google Maps does look and work better on an iphone then computers. Video capture option should be unlocked soon with a software update. I also have worked with a hacked iphone on T-mobile network. The best is to not let it auto update. The last major iphone update didnt go well for ones that were set to do so. Other then that it works as it would on the ATT network.

3G is a hog for not much more of bandwidth. I have a feeling the cell market is about to go nuts. Signs are google's open source OS for Phones and verizon announcements. Also Cable is looking into it. Some now are even providing the backbone in some major cities. Its just another couple of steps to launch cell service.

my mom has an iphone but doesnt sync it with outlook so i'm not sure how it works with that. she does use it with gmail and it works slick, keeps the emails on the server and gmail knows if you've read it or not. she loves her iphone so far. (its only been a month)

Through my research and from what folks have been telling me here and elsewhere, I've decided to wait.

Macworld will likely see some sort of announcement (Jan). All the indicators point to a May/June launch for the 3G version. I found there were some other nice enhancements coming also - let me find the article I found...

I was looking at one the other day at the AT&T store and the guy there told me some things that leave me debating on whether to get one or not.

First- I would lose my corporate discount. Apple does not allow discounts to be offered.

Second- no insurance available.

Third- once you lock into the data plan, if you do not like it, tough, your stuck with it.

Fourth- you have 14 days to try the phone and if you decide to return it, there is a 10% restocking fee. I would want to make sure I received service in all or at least 95% of the areas I travel to and through. Currently I do not get service in all areas unless I use my booster.

Fifth- there is no power booster available or planned as far as anyone has been able to tell me.

I did play around with it in the store. What I did see worked well, and the reception was good and clear. It also allowed the person on the other end to hear me quite well. Many of the other phones seem to break up a little with transmission in my area, or so at least with several of the phones I, my wife and friends have.

I'll have to wait and see though, I'm still debating.

OK - the 3G is finally available. My 3rd Razr is on it's last legs so I will need to make a move soon.

Anyone have a 3G iPhone (or an older version) and can offer some perspective?

I'm curious what you guys are paying monthly too. Right now I'm shelling out around $150 for two phones sharing a 1400 minute plan.

ok i get a discount through my employer but i pay 74.99 and get 1000 anytime minutes a month, plus 5000 night & weekend minutes, and 200 sms messages (this is an iphone thing) and i have unlimited data too which is an iphone standard ($30/mo).

the good:
awesome programs and apps
great browser and interface
push email is PERFECT if you need it
awesome ipod/video interface
literally all info you could need is at your fingertips

the bad:
not as good reception as my razr
bad battery life... especially in Wifi, dont use it unless you absolutely have to.

Lee

i should mention that without my discount this would be 94 bucks a month i believe.

Cebby
08-21-2008, 10:34 AM
So the non-discounted $94 a month includes the $30 data? I think I could be pretty close to where I am now I think if this is the case.

Can I get a day out of the battery? Or are we talking that you need to charge it to make it through the day.

Lee
08-21-2008, 10:43 AM
yup, thats incl the 30 dollar data plan which you are obligated to include.

you can get a day out of the battery if you dont use wifi and dont constantly sit on the internet in 3g. i have a poker game that likes to eat the battery too but its bc it has full 3d graphics.

on the plus side i noticed it charges pretty quick :)

I have just bought an iphone last month. Awesome phone! Its nice to read your email anywhere. I may be going deaf but I wish the phone was a little louder. Whenever I have a voicemail I have to put it on speaker.

of the ones i have, urbanspoon and shazam are just plain cool especially if you want to show the phone to someone... i am obsessed with being able to see weather radar so i have weatherbug.. if you want pandora for music, its a good choice... and i wanted news, so i got a couple apps for that.

just search around itunes, there's an app for every need

i recommend just installing via itunes on your computer, its much faster and more reliable and wont waste your battery.

well i cant quite afford the iphone (i could have afforded the phone, just not the data plan) so i have the wannabe...the iPod touch, along with my regular ATT phone. While it would be fantastic to have internet absolutely anywhere (read: when i go off campus) and the GPS capabilities, ill have to live for now. i can equate my on-campus experience to everyone elses "everywhere" experience. its awesome to be able to check my email and weather and whatnot when in a meeting, in class, hangin out with friends, whatever. the interface (same as the iphone) is awesome in my opinion. everything is done very slick and its easy to navigate. my biggest beef is that mail cant go LANDSCAPE. thats a big beef for a lot of people so i think Apple knows it and is working on it..hopefully we see it in the next big firmware update. i do wish i had the iphone though
