Spent some time at work doing a little homework on the 4runner. After work I made a visit to the dealer to get a few things.
I replaced the shifter seat and bushing because it "wasn't feeling right." I printed out your instructions and took them outside with me. 20 minutes later everything was replaced and working fine. The shifting isn't so notchy feeling but isn't totally smooth yet. I still have to replace the fluid so I'm hoping this will help out. Everything on the 4runners is so cute and small. I finally get to use all of my small sockets and everything turns easily by hand.
Just some props to the write up. I'll probably print out a bunch of projects and put them in a binder for safe keeping.
Just a note in case you head down to the dealer to get the parts to change your shift lever bushing and seat. Bob's writeup references a "shift lever bushing (#33505-35030)." When I went to the dealer they said they would have to order that part and it was $41.99. He said that if I came in and told him what I wanted, without a part number, he would have sold me #33505-35020 ($13.54). He said that's he one they use and the one he sells to shops. I bought the one they had (#33505-35020 - shift seat) and gave it a whirl. It's green where Bob's is blue. The one I bought had a black bottom, like the blue one shown in the write up. The one I took out of the 4runner was blue (I'm guessing like Bob's). Part #33505-35020 was taller than what I took out of the transmission, taller by the black bottom piece dimension. I peeled the black bottom off (it was just glued) and installed it. I think that with the black piece the seat would be too tall and keep you from reinstalling the shift lever collar. Just my 2 cents, seems to working now. The old seat wasn't broken so I kept it just in case. I replaced the bushing as well. The part number wasn't on Bob's write up but the one I bought and installed is #33548-31010 ($6.44 at my dealer).
Thanks again.
