This Write-Up is here for staff to approve to be moved into the tech section. :D

If anyone has not noticed yet,
Bob’s write-up for the 3rd gen cup holder mod is for models NOT equipped with rear heat.
Also in Bob’s write-up, I noticed this mod was done on a manual 4Runner.

If I had opened my eyes I would have realized it.
I have the rear heater and I am running Auto.
I had come across a 99 center console on eBay and nabbed it because I hate the cup holders on my 97.

Well to do this modification on a 3rd Gen equipped is a little harder than a 3rd Gen without.
So, this following write up is specific for 3rd Gen owners who do have the rear heat (and maybe auto).
This modification follows most of Bob’s write up except for a few different things here and there.

As per Bob’s orders remove the old center console, which consists of two Phillips head screws up near the rear of the shift boot and the two 10mm bolts at the of the console compartment, as well as the little knob on the slider for the rear heat.
As you lift up the console remember to unplug the heater wire that leads from the button from the wire that leads to the fan.

Once the console is out of the way, remove the bracket from the body, this is the bracket to which the console is screwed to.
There are 3 bolts that you have to undo, 2 that hold the bracket to the body and one that is extra support for the rear vent. (I will explain the “extra support” later)
For the 3rd Gens equipped with rear heat this is one of the extra steps. You will have to modify this bracket by cutting portions of it away.
(I believe this step can be avoided by purchasing or trying to nab the bracket from a 99, but I am not sure.)
The pictures that follow are the portions that interfere with the vent and the temperature selector that I had to cut off.

Part of the issue:

What to cut off (I cut off a little more then I should have to make sure it would work, please measure yours before you cut):

The larger of the pieces is where part of the rear vent would be screwed into the bracket.
The smaller pieces hit the temperature selector.
I found personally that the vent does not need to be secured to the bracket, it is stout enough and does not need the “extra support” like I stated above.

Next step is to unhook the cable for the temperature gage off.
This is required because you will have to remove the vent to allow access to bolt the bracket back.

Next remove the front passenger seat.
Yes, you read that correctly, you have to remove the front passenger seat to allow access to the rear vent section.

After that remove door sill trim as well as the lower b pillar panel.
You will need to get under the carpet and this is the only way to do it.

Once you have both the seat out and the panels removed as well as the cable undone, lift the carpet and remove the one screw, yes ONE screw that holds the rear vent in place.
Then Pull the vent from the fan and out from under the carpet were the opening to the center console is.
Circled in red is where the one screw is located on the vent.

After you have done that then follow Bob’s instructions for mounting the bracket back from its original position, except for one slight difference.
Bob’s instructions say to move the bracket 1.5 inches back.
I found that I only needed to move the bracket 12/18 or an inch.
This may be because of the rear heaters, I do not know.
When I compared Bob’s pictures to my own bracket it seems that I moved the bracket back the same length.

Once you have done so, reverse the step you took to remove the vent and seat and trim panels and put it all back together, this major part is now done.

Now continue per Bob’s Instructions to modify the e-brake assembly if you had not acquired the 99+ e-brake with your center console.
This step is the same for both equipped and non-equipped rear heat.
Instead of using a tapped hole and screw I used a self tapping metal screw with the lock washer and washer, it work just fine, pulled on it for a little fun and it held solid.

Now that you have done that retire with your old console as well as your new one to someplace that you can work on them.

If you did not receive your 99+ console with the cup holder, cigarette astray, and heater button, all can be transferred from your 98- console.
Bob’s instructions show how this step is done.

If you did not receive the console lid with your 99+ console, you can still use your 98- with a little modification.
If you look at the pictures below you will notice how the 98- console and the 99+ console differ slightly here.

What I ended up doing was to cut off the little tabs on my 97 lid and then drill holes to accommodate the little pins that stick up on the 99+ console.
The reason I altered the 97 lid instead of the 99 console was because if I ever wanted to acquire the 99+ lid with the extra compartment I would like to keep it plug and play as possible.
After that the 97 lid slips right in place and screws in.

Now that you have those modifications out of the way, you can proceed to follow bobs steps to alter the 99+ console to fit into your 98-.

Once you have done that you are set to put the new console in.
Plug the heat wire in first, then slip the console over the lever for the heater and let it rest, put the bolts back in as well as the two Phillips head screws and the knob for the temperature lever and you are finished.
Your 3rd Gen with rear heat equipped now has a 99+ cup holder.
