Kim Cattrall introduced us to the Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside Concept last month when the paparazzi spotted her filming with one for the upcoming Sex and the City movie. What we didn't know then was that Mercedes had double Vision and was planning two GLK concepts for Detroit. Today in Detroit, Ms. Cattrall introduced them both.

The Freeside (above) is the soft-roader able to tackle terrain a bit more rough the Rodeo Drive, while the Vision GLK Townside Concept (below) is more an urban warrior made for sporty sailing on smooth pavement. And though the Freeside looks like a baby GL-Class, the Townside looks a Subaru Forester with a three-pointed star stapled to its grille. Both are technically concepts still, though a production version of the Freeside is a lock. Expect a new four-cylinder BLUETEC diesel to power the GLK that Mercedes promises will over better-than-V6 performance with big fuel economy. Coupled to an efficient 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic, the GLK appears to have a lot to offer. Mercedes was mum on whether a version of the GLK Townside would be offered to the public, though. We prefer the Townside ourselves, though the three-bar grille is so Ford circa 2007.

That's a shame. Looks like a Toureg now.

I was thinking the grill looked like an Acura MDX or even in some way the Ford Edge.

Too boxy imo but I am not exactly in the market for that class of vehicle... LOL

Subaru Forester on Roids!!!!!!

It seems like they don't appreciate their market always choosing land rovers and escalades. In Indiana I'll see 30-40 Land Rovers to the one G wagon. The reason I liked the G wagon was its simple design. Now some vehicles look better in person than in a picture so I hope that is the case for the new G. Otherwise I'm with Eric and think it looks like a well designed forester.

funny, me and the misses went for a walk at the park and the mbz dealership was across the street. so we checked out this black 02 g-wagen w/ 56k on the odo. it was sellign for $52k. eeek! but man, it is quite nice inside. personally, i like the g-wagens, but this new incarnation sucks. looks like it has shades of the R class. worse yet, it lost its boxy-ness. thats like putting rake-ish lines in a D90.

this is the style i like. 4 door is better

It's not a bad looking vehicle, just not what I'd consider a g-wagon.

Wow, I liked the old one better.

It seems the new one has little to do with the old and therefore wouldn't fill its niche anyway. Why not just call it a new model.

This is a classic example of when the good child is influenced by the bad child. It's a Chrysler now...
