C'mon Toyota, get with the program! You can't possibly let Honda beat ya to this punch line can you? geez...

We've been hearing about Honda's upcoming clean diesel for quite some time now, and the automaker was kind enough to show a cutaway of the i-DTEC clean diesel for us at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. Expect to see the engine appear first in an upcoming and unnamed Acura product around 2009 - but while you may have to wait over a year for the engine, you can see some cutaways of it right now in our photo gallery below. Click past the jump for some brief commentary on what we learned about Honda's i-DTEC clean diesel in Detroit.

Now a hybrid diesel would be icing on the cake!

I've been hearing via the grapevine that the 2009 CRV and Accord (yes, the Accord!) will be coming out in diesel versions for 2009 and that the Honda Pilot will have a much larger diesel motor the year after it's new redesign debuts in 2009 as well. I seriously think Toyota has some major catching up to do in this department because even the hybrids it does offer are still way too expensive for the inrease in fuel economy. If gas prices keeps going up as fast as many people think they will in the next few years, the Tundra and Sequoia (as nice as they look now) won't sell well without a diesel option either.

Wow I didn't know the CRV would get the diesel but I guess I could see it happening. As for the Accord I too heard this as they've already discontinued the Hybrid Accord for this very reason.

hmm Accord diesel... yummy! time to upgrade my 00 Accord :D

I believe so.

For Toyota, a diesel will eat into their hybrid sales, a market that has likely yet to pay for itself. Hybrids increase the cost of the vehicle more than is typically charged to us customers. While the two together can yield large fuel economy increases, they also yield huge price increases.

frank I agree with ya 100% and I too will agree that I doubt that we'll see any diesels in the Toyota line up except for the large vehicle market (tundy/seq)

Keep in mind that North America is really a latecomer to the diesel game and a majority of the vehicles sold overseas are diesel. Honda has been selling diesels in Europe for quite some time so without any huge investment in hybrid technology, Honda naturally would look to bring in what it's already selling elsewhere (smart move on their part).

Notice the dates on these:

I'm holding off buying any brand new vehicles until I see what comes out in 2009 because this little 2.2L turbocharged motor is supposed to pump out 170 HP and 320 lb-ft of torque which is about the same torque that the 4.7L Toyota motor can pump out! How funny would that be......a little CR-V with more towing capability than a V8 4runner. The gas mileage difference between the two will probably make you want to cry too. I believe the projected mileage for the CR-V is around 30 MPG city and 40 MPG highway and it should have a towing capacity of around 5,000 lbs.

If more companies start offering diesels, toyota will have no choice but to follow. Personally I wouldn't even consider a hybrid, just don't care for all the extra technology.
Diesels on the other hand are very nice to drive, and are simple engines.

GM actually as the DTI engines in the opel lineup, which are very good also. No if saturn would only offer them in their new (to us) astra then I'd be looking at one of those for around town.
