so ive had this knocking noise coming from my engine from day 1. knocking is the only way i can describe it and its most prevalent when the engine is cold and at idle. it speeds up with engine rpms until its so fast that you cant hear it or until all other engines sounds drown it out. does anyone else have this problem? what could it be? 2000 tacoma 3.4l

thanks

sounds like valve noise.
could be a slightly bent valve, or a bad seat, you could do the screwdriver to the ear method and find out where it is coming from...

whats this screwdriver to the ear method you speak of? i can put 2+2 together but i'd rather hear it straight from the horses mouth. im thinking it could be the valves too, thats the general consensus.

It's pretty much what it sounds like. Put the metal end on the area you want to check and then hold the handle in your hand and put your ear on the part of the handle that sticks up. If there's a sound, believe it or not, you'll hear it. A mechanic's stethoscope works even better.

X2 on the stethoscope.

Alot safer too.

I got mine for like $6

Allows you to get a little farther from the spinning belts and what not.

ill get around to this stethoscope thing soon but i thought i might add that this knocking is really only prevalent when the engine is real cold (usually in cold weather) and only when the engine is under load, aka accelerating and driving the wheels. i usually can't hear it when just idling or reving it while not moving
