View Full Version : Pooing in the outdoors

Yup it's a poopie thread!

Whether it's "droppin the kids off", "Bakin some brownies" or just plain "gonna go take a dump", we all do this (I hope!). Anyway, when nature called in the wilderness I've always just dug a nice hole (shallow grave). I've always considered looking at those portable containers to assist with the "relaxation of the poopie experience". At any rate I'd like to get some feedback on the various gadgets available to make the pooing experience a better one.

Here's some cool stuff I found over the years of surfin:

PETT Portable Toilet (http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=125) from Sierra Expeditions
Cabela's Portable Pooper (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp;jsessionid=XODZOIFOURB5PLAQBBJSCOFMCAEFII WE?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20075-cat20087-cat20097&id=0043262517641a&navCount=53&podId=0043262&parentId=cat20097&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20097&hasJS=true&_requestid=38491&_requestid=84868) from Cabela
Thetford Porta Potti (http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm/Outdoor-and-RV-Accessories/Thetford-Porta-Potti-465-Electric/skunum=35773) from Camping World (MFG Link (http://www.thetford.com/HOME/PRODUCTS/PortableToilets/PortaPotti465/tabid/166/Default.aspx))
Reliance Luggable Loo Portable Toilet (http://www.target.com/Reliance-Luggable-Loo-Portable-Toilet/dp/B000FIAPXO) from Target

Personally I'll still do the shovel and call it a day because I just can't imagine myself luggin the poo bag in the cabin while we drive to the next destination. To me keeping the nuclear waste in the cabin can be deadly :)

this is what the "kickout" on your sliders are for :flipoff:

A trick I learned in the marines:

Use your military style folding shovel to dig your "grave"

Fold the handle on the shovel so that it is at a 90degree angle

Put shovel in ground and rest one cheek on the shovel handle

This worked great when you are out in the middle of the desert with no bushes, trees, etc.. to lean on.

Don't forget to read the book on the subject too.

Warning, link contains cuss words (http://www.amazon.com/How-Shit-Woods-Environmentally-Approach/dp/0898156270/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201144524&sr=8-1)

You know Lance this is an excellent thread. Nothing I like more(almost nothing anyway) than a good camping Poo!

I bought the Luggable Loo Toilet seat and some of the Poo bio bags and put them on a Home Depot bucket. I really like this set up. Super Cheap. The bags are the key here though. The bags are very strong and have powder stuff in them to cover at least a days worth of use for 3 people and a very effective double zip lock seal. No odors at all. No clean up either after all said and done.

The way I use the system is to open a bag on the bucket rim, place the toilet seat, do your business and then tuck the opened bag back into itself and seal the zip lock. Place zip locked unful bag in the bottom of the bucket for further use later int he day or weekend. No smell or mess or clean up. Really a nice system.

Also of note is the the opening in the seat is not huge so men should do #1 business in the woods. This will also make the bio bag powder stuff last longer. However, the small opening works good for children as young as 2 year old. So you don't have to bring a seperate potty chair for them so they don't fall in as they say.

Enjoy!

Boy have I done some slider slidin while death grippin my driver's side slider. Man Mexican food night went so wrong for me at 0300 last year at Superstition.

This is all well and good Chris but if you want to entice your Lady to go out and "rough" it with you(helps you to get more vehicle mod's when you let them drive, hint hint) then a crap station of some sort will help for sure!

 so true! I've already been looking at adding a shower/privy shelter and some type of toilet to our camping gear. Especially since I will now be camping with two ladies. :D

i plan on employing a home depot bucket, WITH lid, and a collection of trash bags. put bag in, squat on bucket, do business, tie up bag. may be reused or one use (ill spend the extra few cents on another bag...)

also worth mentioning. using moist wipes (baby wipes or other) is a great idea! gets you really clean, esp when you dont have a shower to wash yourself down there). plus you dont get the butt itchies in the middle of the day...

After you're done taking the Browns to the Super Bowl, it is a good idea to push a stick upright into the dirt so that nobody has a chance of stepping through the layer of dirt.

Kinda like marking a landmine, I guess.

One book every camping toilet connaisseur should flip though is call "Up Shit Creek" (Can I say that?! :tapedshut:) No joke, it's a real book. http://www.amazon.com/Shit-Creek-Collection-Horrifyingly-Misadventures/dp/0898159393/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201153519&sr=8-1 I received a copy for Christmas a couple years ago. It's a bunch of short stories about rafting trips where you pack EVERTHING out.

These rafting guides use a military ammo can that they call a "groover". This name comes from the unfortunate people who forget to pack the toilet seat :spank:

Anyway, it's a good read :hillbill:

In the military this is sometimes referred to as "Roast Beef A-hole". Why? Because it ends up getting all pink and tender if not cleaned properly.

I've had the PET for 3-4 years now and love it. With 3 daughters a toilet isn't optional.

95% of the time we just dig a hole and set the PET up over it. I carry some bags in case there isn't a good spot for a hole but we rarely need them where we go.

back east, you take an axe, make a hole in a turned over tree, and hint your crapper hole, just hope nothing is residing in that tree that could give you a OHHHHHH ####%$^^$# kinda phrase

When you do the deed in a hole, make it 200' from a water source.

I have this friend that I surf with that used finally get out through a really hard paddle of break and then have to go #2. So he would just peel his wet suit down to his ankles and hang his butt off the side of his long board and go.

But we surf down here next to TJ anyway so surfing with Tijuana brown trout is not that uncommon.

Sorry a bit off topic but the last post had 'water source' in it and made me think of my buddy pooing in the ocean.

The Pit Stop Portable Urinal (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/pit-stop-portable-urinal-125-gallons-before-stopping-162207.php) for those times when the trail leader just won't stop for potty breaks. Holds 1.25 gallons. :hillbill:

I know it's not poo, but still useful. :hillbill: Nothing better than poo to make a great thread.

empty gatoraide bottle is much cheaper, and much easier to dispose of. Simply open window and dump content.....

Don't know if it was mentioned or not, but, its important: Burn your TP!!!

Especially where coyotes are around, they will dig up your poop, and TP everywhere is a gross site and kills the beauty of the land.

I automatically hear: "Well, when if my TP starts a fire!?"... Well, sorry, it takes an extra 5 minutes to burn the TP all the way down to ash, stand there, make sure nothing goes flying away into the brush, and then cover it up good. ;)

Just adding my .02

There are camping spots in Baja where people do not know about this "trick" and its just so ridiculous when you're on a hike and you just see the white trash littering the entire landscape.

I like to cut a hole in the bottom of a bucket, dig a hole under a nice shade tree, insert bucket into hole and voila a pooper
