Well I finally dropped off both thirds and a Truetrac to get set up with 5.71's. I'm going to get 33X10.5's thereafter. Claire asked that I not bust up my knuckles and get may hands all greasy installing these before the wedding (2/9) and I agreed so I guess I'll have to get some good mechanics gloves. :hillbill:

I'll get some before an after pics here soon.

That's a heck of a wedding present your getting her!

I'm jealous, this needs to be my next mod, but also the most expensive. Maybe I could sell one of my kids. :hillbill:

I hear ya. The runner's tires are getting pretty shot and I'm so over getting stuck in sand, etc... I explained that this is one hurdle every off roader has to cross, just a matter of when. She's cool with it and I'm sure the next time we wheel I'll get to see how good it all works from behind the digicam. :D

Well I picked up some 33's today. So get this, those 33X10.5's are on back order for 6 weeks min. BFG has 2000 pair on back order and non in production. I decided screw it, I'll go with the 12.5's. I have angle grinder and big Thor-like hammer.

Well they don't rub on the street but will on the trail. I'm going to max out my caster, not like you can adjust in too much of it, to increase firewall clearance and trim a bit. Otherwise they almost fit.

The truck gets along alright. I can tell I'll have to downshift to climb most of the hills in San Diego on the freeway until the thirds are done. I tell ya' though, this truck should get up and move with 5.71's.

I only need about.5". I can almost get that by adjusting the alignment. But, I shall trim.

BTW, the clearance pics are at full lock.

Well, maybe... unless someone else nearby had bigger tires...

Well I did some trimming today. I can see why 2" body lifts are recommended. I needed 2 more inches. I have a 1" bodylift awaiting install but for now it's off. My hope is these pictures can serve to show someone what they will need to do if they want to install 33X12.5's without a body lift or with just a small one (1"). I will likely rub under a situation where I'm descending while turning hard with the suspension crossed up because that might load up the front enough to compress the suspension to the bumpstops. The BL should take care of that.

I disconnected the front sway bar but left the rear on to get the most flex out of the front. I turned the wheel full lock and drove onto these ramps. I'm trying to get the worst case here.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming1.jpg

This is about all the flex I typically get on the trail. I might get a bit more but usually I'm about to lift a wheel at this point.

The interference.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming3.jpg

This shows how much up travel remains assuming I could get it to flex farther.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming5.jpg

This is a view from the bottom of where I am to cut.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming6.jpg

This shows the area one needs to cut and hammer.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming7.jpg

Here I just need to fasten the plastic down. There is room behind it. I actually tucked the bottom into the remaining fender. This retains the splash guarding.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming8.jpg

Here it is with the plastic fastened down.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming9.jpg

This shows the other side. I had to fold the lip back more to have some extra clearance.

http://sdori.com/eventimages/trimming10.jpg

This was very easy to do and took less than an hour.

Explain the reasoning w/ the 5.71's vs. 4.88's with the auto...

IIRC O/E was 4.11's or 4.56's, correct??

I just thought the 5.71 was if you had a manual, but the auto's are always geared a bit higher that the manuals due to the overdrive.

*You can reply here or pm me...This part's not covered at all in the FAQ stuff and should honestly be thought of for that and the WIKI.

Many autos like mine, came stock with 4.88's and 31"tires. This combo is even underpowered, that means 33's and 5.29's put you back to stock which is still underpowered and doesn't hold OD very well. This is why 5.71's.

No worries.

My V6 auto came with the 31" tire option and therefore 4.88 gears.

So the difference between 31's and 33's is 6.5%. Typically that means a 5.29 gear set would leave me 2% undergeared. (5.29/4.88-1) Under geared is typically good because it helps to compensate for the added drag and inertia of larger tires. However... that auto has this issue, OD.

The auto's OD is .71:1 while 3rd gear is 1:1. The 5 speed has a .85:1 OD with a 1:1 4th gear. What this means is you have this huge RPM drop on the auto and often it can't climb a lot of hills on the freeway. When you lean into the throttle with an auto the first thing it does is unlock the torque converter and proceed to consume a lot more fuel and make the transmission very hot. Keep leaning into it and it will downshift to the tune of a, I dunno, 1200 RPM jump. Being able to climb hills with the auto using less pedal is good. Lower gearing can do that.

Since 5.71's are 17% lower than 4.88's typically one could say I'm 11.5% under geared with 33's. However if you compare my auto to the stick the my OD is "over geared (in my opinion) 20%. So, to draw a parallel I'm going to compare final drive ratios 5-speed/4.88's to auto/5.71's. Tire size is the same so cancels out. Final drive ratios are as follows,(5-seed) 4.88*.85 = 4.184, (auto) 5.71*.71 = 4.051, means the auto is still geared taller, lower RPM's at OD cruising, but now instead of 20% it's about 3% (4.184/4.051-1).

Now my 3rd gear is going to be a rather low gear but I should need to kick down to it a whole lot less now. Also, the truck should scoot when the pedal is depressed since the first 3 gears are rather low.

In the end this is a wheeling truck and it needs to crawl well so lower is good.

Hope this helps!

Here's an interesting article from Zuk on the strength of the 5.71's:

Set up is likely more critical just because the teeth are shearing across one another faster on the 5.71's but shoot, just set 'em up right! Also, I having the rears cryo treated.

Hey Frank,
This is Anthony Lim. I haven't been on these boards for a while....I see you've changed your truck....getting married and stuff..Great!
I don't know if you remember a guy name Leo from 4x4wire board or not. He did a 1" BL with 33's. he banged in the corners in the front and that cleared the tires.
btw, I'm using 5.29 with 35's my speedo is faster than it should be.

Your trucks looks great...reminded me of one of the stages of my truck...:)

Anthony! How are things. Yeah my speedo should read very high. I will have to see how it goes but I can at least add 35's down the road if I want to do so.

I'm moving to Chicago this summer where the speed limit is still 55MPH which is a bummer but makes it less likely I'll miss tall OD. Also, towing a trailer back there should be easier with these gears.

Methinks you're over analyzing this trimming thing. Ditch the inner plastic, pull the fenders, and trim with shears. Pound the seam flat. I'm running 33x12.50's with zero lift, and slight rubbing only happens when the wheels are fully cut and stuffed..

Plastic door seam guards cover the fender cuts, and the truck looks stock.

My intention was not to "over think" but to show those who have not done this where the problem areas are. In fact I would call this mod a no brainer because it was so easy and took so little time to do.

Yes I will miss the weather. I will have cool job though. Also, I plan to buy a second truck and leave it at my folk's place for visits... of course wheeling etc... will occur during the visits.
