Has anyone here upgraded their 96-98 4runners to the newer 99-02 style airbox and maf sensor? If so, which wires did you change positions in the connector. I'm not at work this weekend so I dont have access to all of my info and I would like to get this done this weekend. Any help would be appreciated

Curious, why do such a modification?

Because the 96-98 air flow sensors are alot more restrictive than the 99-02 setups. Alot of people use twin turbo supra MAF's also because they flow alot more air. I got the newer airbix and sensor for $50 yesterday. Now I just need to repin the MAF connector since the pins are different

ah interesting, never new that.
You'll have to do a writeup once you figure out the pin setup.

These two attached pics should get you what you need to finish.
It would be really nice if you could take pics and do a little writeup if you have time.

Anytime! I just edited the 99-02 pic because the pinouts were not named consistently.

why doesnt it list the far right terminal in either pic?

I just poted a whole write up about the process with pics and then it logged me out and erased the post!!GRRRRRRRRRR. I will repost when I can. Oh yah...the picture diagrams arn't exactly right for the new maf! I will explain in my write up

ok. write up posted. I dont think it sounds as good as the one I tried to put up first. If anyone has any questions they can pm me. Thanks for the good info MTL. The only diff with the wiring is I had to switch VG and E3 with each other since VG is the gold pin and that pin is the center pin on the MAF

I'll fix my diagrams if they aren't correct so we don't confuse anyone.
Let me know what's not right and I'll change it.

in the diagram for the newer MAF switch vg and e3. That should take care of it

toytech,
sorry, but what do you have planned for this increased flow of air? and how much more air flow are you getting? to me, it sounds neglible for the effort, but i applaud you for blazing a new trail. maybe i'm not seeing a clear cost-benefit thing, but having had a 99 and now owning a 98, my butt-o-meter can tell you that there is no difference between throttle response or anything like that between the two. however, my 5 speed 98 can definitely get a better tire screeching start than the 99 :)

Its more of a benefit for those who have supercharged engines. Honestly if you have looked down the airbox tube of both styles I think you would agree the earlier is more restrictive. See my first picture for the 97 airbox. Anyone who knows anything about airflow is the less cluttered your intake track the better, right? I'm not making a claim of major increase in anything, seeing I used the word SLIGHTLY in my post. Not only is it a better steup for supercharged motors, but as I stated before, the cost of a MAF sensor replacement is LARGELY reduced using the newer setup. A $130 MAF as compared to a $600 MAF. That alone would be more than enough reason for me to change it over.
MTL...yes..the diagram looks correct now. Thanks for all of your info!!!

toytec,
dude, im definitely not knocking what youre doing, im just trying to understand.
like i said, its admirable that youre blazing a new trail, not many people do that.
ok, S/C application. that makes more sense now. yeah, i know what youre saying re design of MAF sensor. its night and day. it would be interesting to see if there is a definite benefit to this mod (i.e. baseline your 97 maf vs the new 99)

well I also removed the airtube and the 90 deg elbow off the plate the airbox fits into. That has been dyno proven by a guy named gadget. (gadgetonline.com) I dont think he did my airbox mod but the airtube mod actually made more RWH than a K&N cold air kit. I dont have my blower yet but when I do I would like to check baselines on it

A few of the other benefits (for even a N/A motor) of changing the setup are that if you need to clean the MAF, it is a tad bit easier to access. Second, the airbox design on the 96-98 tends to break off the plastic arm where the MAF mounts to and doesn't always seal well to the airbox itself. Lastly, if you ever do need a new MAF, they are a heck of alot cheaper than the 96-98 style.
